Speaker Grill Replacement Techniques

The grills on stereo speakers and car speakers can become broken, bent or ripped. Replacing the grills on speakers does not have to be a costly undertaking. Use materials you have around the house, perhaps in an old rag bag or even in your closet, to replace the speaker grills while achieving the same sound quality you have always enjoyed from the speakers.

Screen Wire

Dismantle a wire clothes hanger. Reshape the dismantled wire clothes hanger into the shape of the front of the speaker box. Measure a sheet of screen wire and add 2 inches more than the length of the speaker box. Place the screen wire on the wire clothes hanger. Wrap the excess screen wire around the sides of the hanger. Staple the screen wire so that it fits snugly around the wire. Use screws to tighten the screen wire grill onto the speaker box. The type of screw you need will vary depending on whether your speaker box is metal or particle board.

Leotard

Use an old thick pair of leotards. Cut away the legs of the leotard. Remove the seams of the leotard until you are left with a sheet of leotard that measures the same dimensions as the speaker grill. Use staples on each corner of a wooden speaker box, or screws on a metal speaker box, to secure the old leotard into place tightly. Dismantle the speaker box and place the leotard directly on each speaker in the box, if you are concerned with a neat appearance of the speaker box.

Silk

Cut an old silk shirt to fit the length and width of the speaker box. Staple or screw the silk to the speaker box so that it fits tightly and securely. You may want to dismantle the speaker box and place the silk on the front of each speaker in the box for the sake of neatness.
