Make A Wood Stain With Vinegar & Steel Wool

Vinegar can create a beautiful stain for wood.

Wood stains are readily available in a variety of colors at almost any home improvement store. Some wood stains contain chemicals that can cause internal and skin irritation. A more natural alternative, vinegar and steel wool, can be used to produce similar results to commercial wood stains. Not only is this method non-toxic, but it can save money as well.

Instructions

1. Fill a glass bowl with clear vinegar. The amount of vinegar needed depends on the size of your project, so prepare a little more vinegar than you think you'll need.

2. Place a steel wool pad in the vinegar and let it soak for 12 hours. The longer the steel wool soaks, the darker the vinegar will become.

3. Pour the vinegar through a strainer and into a separate bowl. The steel wool can be discarded.

4. Brush the vinegar on the wood with a paintbrush. Apply one layer at a time and let each one completely dry, until you reach your desired results.
