Types Of Porch Swings

Many porch swings move on gliders.

The porch swing, for many people, is a reminder to slow down, relax and reflect, whether with family and friends or by yourself. Still, the traditional porch swing can be cumbersome and even too large for some small porches. The need for varying size and comfort inspired several kinds of porch swings that cater to different requirements. Does this Spark an idea?

Hanging Deck Swing

The hanging deck swing is a very common and perhaps the most recognizable version of the porch swing. It is a wooden swing suspended by the roof of the porch. The seat swings like a pendulum and is regulated only by the chain length and porch roof. The swing has a bench-style back with flat wooden slats of equal length running horizontally across the swing's length. Likewise, the seat is composed of horizontally laid slats with cross-beam supports. This kind of swing can hang by rope, but more often it hangs by stainless steel chains, which have a greater load capacity than rope and do not wear as easily in the elements.

Glider Swing

A one- or two-seat glider swing can be made from wood, textile, metal or plastic. Unlike hanging swings that rely on support from the porch roof, the glider swing glides on its own apparatus. This spring-loaded gliding mechanism doesn't allow for as much freedom as a hanging swing, but a glider swing can be moved and removed from the porch whenever necessary.

Swing Chair

Like the hanging deck swing, the swing chair is suspended from the porch ceiling. The difference between the two kinds of swings is that the swing chair is designed to seat one person. This type of porch swing is made from plastic, wood or wicker and is suspended by a stainless steel chain that provides adequate support for the sitter. A swing chair has dual arm rests and often includes cushions for added comfort.

Hammock Swing

A hammock swing is a rope version of the swing chair. It can be made from cloth or from rope woven into weblike patterns. Usually suspended by a chain, this kind of porch swing is designed for one person and can be hung up when not in use, maximizing porch space.

Adirondack Swing

The Adirondack swing is a version of the hanging deck swing. This porch swing features additional comfort with seat backs that conform more readily to the size of an adult's back.
