Taking the time to line a valance will give your window treatment a more polished look. It will make a valance fuller and with a crisper look, allowing it to properly hang. Lining a valance also helps protect the valance fabric from sun exposure. This simple lined valance will give your window treatment a professional appearance and you don't need to be a seamstress to achieve success.
Instructions
1. Install the hardware and curtain rod 3 inches above your window frame and 2 inches on each side.
2. Measure the width of your window and multiply two to three times. Use this measurement for the width of your valance.
3. Measure from the top of the curtain rod to 18 inches below the top of the window. Add 7 inches to this total. Use this measurement for the width of your valance.
4. Seam together the width of your valance fabric to achieve the width measurement for your valance. Press the seams open.
5. Seam together the width of your lining fabric to achieve the width measurement for your valance. Press the seams open.
6. Lay the valance fabric face up on a flat surface. Place the lining fabric face down on top of the valance fabric. Measure and cut both layers using the valance width and length measurements.
7. Pin the sides of the valance and lining pieces together. Sew a 1/4 inch seam on both sides of the valance.
8. Turn the valance right side out and press the seams.
9. Lay the valance face down on an ironing surface. Fold and press the hem up 1 inch. Fold and press again 2 inches and pin.
10. Sew the hem using a sewing machine and matching thread.
11. Lay the valance face down on an ironing surface. Fold the top edge of the valance down 1 inch and press. Fold and press the edge down again, another 2 1/2 inches and pin for the rod pocket.
12. Sew the rod pocket using a sewing machine and matching thread.
13. Sew a top stitch a 1/2 inch from the rod pocket edge. This will create a ruffle along the top of the valance when placed on the curtain rod.
