Spruce up the stools for your dining room, kitchen or bar with handmade stool covers. Sewn out of medium-weight fabric such as chintz, flannel, satin or velvet, stool covers add a soft look and feel to hard wood or metal stools. Make stool covers in matching fabric colors for a traditional look, or sew mix-matched colors for a funky style.
Instructions
1. Place the seat portion of the stool on top of an opened paper grocery sack. Trace around the stool seat, adding a 3-inch margin around the edges.
2. Cut out the stool-cover template. Place the stool-cover template on top of your fabric. Cut out the circle for the stool cover.
3. Fold in the edges of the circle over the wrong side of the fabric, 1/4 inch all around. Hold the fold with straight pins placed about 2 inches apart. Machine-stitch the folded edges down and remove the pins.
4. Sew 1/4-inch wide elastic to the edge of the circle. Stretch the elastic as taut as possible as you go. The edges of the stool cover will curl up and begin to take shape as you sew.
5. Place the stool cover on the seat.
