Woodworking is a gratifying hobby that allows you to work with your hands to create a beautiful tangible object like a box, a bowl or a piece of furniture. At the highest level, woodworking is an art, but get started by following in the footsteps of master woodworkers and following patterns for your wood project. Start with easy patterns, and as you build up your tool chest and experience, experiment with making and modifying more complicated project patterns.
Tools and Materials
Different patterns will call for different tools, although you will find much commonality as you move from simpler to more complicated projects. A basic tool box will include a multi-tool like the Dremel, sanding blocks and sanders, various adhesives, fasteners, brushes and finishes like paints and stains. You'll also want to become conversant with the quality of various woods--their figure patterns, grain, saw patterns and the way they take stains. Purchase tools and lumber as appropriate for the pattern you are making and gradually your tool box will grow.
Start with Small Patterns
If you're new to woodworking, start with small patterns to gain practice in using your tools and materials. It's easy to find patterns for boxes, toys, bird houses and games and other simple projects, and such projects are fun and make great gifts. Once you feel comfortable with these small patterns, bump up the size and try your hand at making a chair, chest, coffee table or cabinet. Many of the same joints are used, but you'll gain experience cutting and sanding larger surfaces.
More Complicated Patterns
Where you branch next depends on your interest. If you have access to a lathe, you can try turning bowls, round boxes, railings and lamps. Experiment with the highest quality finishes and you are moving into fine cabinetry or pure art. Carving is another specialized field with its own sets of tools and techniques. Join carving with furniture making to ornament cabinetry, or modify patterns for free-standing art sculptures like animals, lettering or signs.
