Second Life
is a fully customizable online game. Residents often make clothes, either to open a store in the virtual world or to show off a stylish personality. Baking a clothing texture begins in Photoshop, where you design and draw out the clothing layer with a Linden Lab clothing template. As these templates define the avatar's measurements, designers require the use of the templates to create all clothing textures. When starting to make clothes, working with the "Upper Body" template allows you to make T-shirts and jackets.
Instructions
Creating the Texture
1. Download all the official Linden Lab body and clothing templates from Second Life Wiki under "Clothing Tutorials." These templates save as a Photoshop document file or PSD.
2. Right click the "Upper Body" templates inside the folder and choose "Open." The templates automatically open with Adobe Photoshop. Once Photoshop loads, you see a basic outline of the avatar body with different lines. These lines denote layers and seams. On your layers dialog to the right, click on "Working Layer" to begin a new shirt.
3. Click on the paintbrush tool and select a color to draw the shirt. A photo reference helps you decide on colors and design, so keep a fashion magazine or background photo open on your computer.
4. Paint in the area of the shirt with the paint brush tool on the "Front" section of the template. Stay within the lines and note the area of the chest and torso. You want to draw the shirt as close to these lines as possible. Clean up any mistakes with the erase tool.
5. Follow the curve of the neck and body the same as the "Front" side of the template on the template labeled "Back," which is the back of the shirt.
6. Move your paintbrush down to the template marked "Outer Arms" and "Inner Arms." Continue to fill in the shape of your shirt. Second Life's texture system is broken up into segments in Photoshop, but in the game, your shirt comes together.
7. Add in shadows with the burn tool and highlight any other areas with the dodge tool. If creating a shirt for a specific gender, the chest and arm area allows you to highlight muscles and breasts.
8. Hide all other layers besides "Working Layer" by clicking the eye left of the layer's name in the layer palette. You only want to save the texture of the working layer.
