Remove Stains On Antique Wood Furniture

Cleaning antique wooden furniture must be done with care.


Restoring old antiques can brighten up a room and bring you a great deal of personal satisfaction. However, cleaning antique wooden furniture must be done with care in order to avoid damaging or discoloring the wood. It is also important to wear protective layers in order to avoid personal harm as a result of using the different chemicals. Does this Spark an idea?


Instructions


1. Combine 2 tbsp. gum turpentine with 1 gallon of hot water in one container and 4 tbsp. boiled linseed oil with 1 gallon of hot water in a second container.


2. Dip a soft cloth into the gum turpentine and water mixture and wipe down the furniture. This should remove any dirt, oils and stains.


3. Create a mixture of 20 percent ammonia and 80 percent water if the stain remains. Dampen a cloth in the mixture and wipe down the furniture again.


4. Wipe down the furniture with a cloth moistened with paint thinner if the stain still remains.


5. Wipe down the furniture with a soft cloth dampened with bleach if the stain still remains.


6. Apply a dry cleaning spot remover and scrub the furniture with a stiff brush if the stain has penetrated the wood.


7. Smooth the previously stained area on the wood with sandpaper.


8. Wipe the furniture with the linseed oil and water mixture to replace oils on the wood and create a new finish.


9. Dry the furniture with a clean cloth and polish it using a surface wax or lemon oil.
