Refurbish An Old Onebed Camper

Refurbish an old camper to use on vacation.

Older campers can be refurbished and given new life as a weekend retreat. In fact, what seems like an old camper may need nothing more than a face-lift and upgrade of old systems. The most important thing to consider when buying a camper is the condition of the structural systems. As long as the structure is intact, refurbishing the inside only requires some imagination.

Instructions

1. Check the roof seals and seams for leaks. Perform the same check around windows and doors. If leaks are present seal them to prevent further damage from the elements. Replacement windows and doors can be ordered from any camper dealership; in some cases, an order will need to be placed with the manufacturer.

2. Remove old non-working appliance systems and replace them with newer models. If you do not intend to use the old furnace, refrigerator and stove, recycle them and use the space for extra storage or sleeping quarters. Consider purchasing camping-style butane or propane appliances as a replacement.

3. Remove cabinetry and bed frames that are in a state of disrepair. Removing these allows you to build modern systems that will meet your needs and increase the space inside the camper. Building cabinets into the new bed frame will drastically increase storage and open floor space.

4. Clean and replace worn or damaged underlayment. Particle board and other types of underlayment absorb water, which contributes to rot and odor. When refurbishing an older camper it's imperative to remove any source of odors caused by mold and mildew.

5. Paint the paneling in an old camper with odor-killing paint. Start with a quality primer coat of the same product and finish with a quality semi-gloss paint product. Old campers have paneling installed. Painting the paneling with a primer coat will ensure that consecutive coats adhere to the first.

6. Check the water lines for defects. An old camper that was not winterized properly may have sustained damage. Put water in the tanks and check for leaks. Use the pumps to make sure they are in working order. Replace damaged parts as necessary. Consider upgrading systems more than 10 years old.
