Types Of Colonial Furniture Produced In The 1700s

The Colonial period is generally considered the time period from 1600 to the late 1700s, when the colonies declared themselves free from England. In that time frame, colonial furniture makers were designing furniture that was inspired by their culture and native country. Does this Spark an idea?


Pilgrim Style


Pilgrim-style furniture was produced in the late 1600s into the 1700s. Commonly made out of oak or pine, pilgrim furniture was simple but strong and massive. Broad, slat-back chairs, wainscoting and turned spindles were common elements of the style.


William and Mary Style


William and Mary style furniture was produced in the late 1600s until the second decade of the 1700s. Made of walnut or maple, the William and Mary style used spiral shapes. All designs featured a ball on the bottom of each furniture leg.


Queen Anne Style


Queen Anne style furniture was built in the years of 1725 to 1750 and were constructed mainly from walnut, maple, cherry and mahogany. It is recognized because of its curved features and carved motifs. Queen Anne style was the first to upholster the sofa, which featured an arched back.


Federal Style


Federal style furniture was produced in the late 1780s until the early 1800s. Federal style furniture is recognized by its smaller scale and its simplistic lines. The legs on Federal style furniture were tapered.


Chippendale Style


Chippendale style was the craftsmanship of Thomas Chippendale in the years of 1750 until 1780. Chippendale pieces were made from mahogany and featured elaborate curves and scroll work.


Shaker Style


The Shakers were a religious group who began selling their furniture to other colonists in 1789. Shaker style furniture features simplistic designs and clean lines. Shaker furniture is functional and practical; it was never intended to be used for ornate decoration.
