The Best & Cheapest Retirement Locations

Retirees can choose from many locations.

As baby boomers reach retirement age, they seek affordable, comfortable places to spend their golden years. Many traditional retirement locations, such as Miami, Sedona, Asheville and Mexico have become overpriced and crowded, so retirees have found new places to live. If you are nearing retirement age and are looking for a retirement spot that offers cheap living costs and many amenities, you can choose from several locations.

Chattanooga

Retirees who had their hearts set on retirement in Asheville, N.C., but found that the real estate prices and cost of living are now too expensive, should consider retiring in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This Tennessee city has the same climate, natural elements and benefits of Asheville, but offers retirees living costs well below the national average, according to Smart Money. It features a vibrant arts scene, several nearby universities, beautiful nature and many recreation areas for active seniors. Residents of Tennessee also only have to pay income taxes on interest payments and dividends, but not on pension or Social Security payments.

Bellingham

If you want to retire in the Pacific Northwest, but want to avoid the retirement crowds and high income tax of Eugene, Oregon, check out Bellingham, Washington. This bay city features charming neighborhoods, mountain views, a seaside marina and forests. It may be the ideal retirement spot for you if you enjoy fishing in the ocean and freshwater lakes, skiing, sailing, hiking or kayaking. According to Today's Senior Network, this town has been featured on many retirement top spot lists and rankings, but it is not overpriced or overpopulated yet. Also, the state of Washington does not have a state income tax.

Argentina

Retirees who've always dreamed of settling abroad and who want to find the next international hot spot can move to Argentina. According to the AARP website, Argentina offers retirees a wide variety of cities to choose from as well as low cost of living. In fact, after a 2002 economic meltdown, real estate prices have dropped and the U.S. dollar will go very far in this South American country. Argentina offers a European-like ambiance, complete with many famous wineries and chic retirement neighborhoods. Choose from the fast-paced capital, Buenos Aires, or settle down in quiet places such as Mendoza or the world-class beach resort of Punta del Este.

Ecuador

In 2009, "International Living" named this South American country as the best place in the world to retire. It offers expatriate retirees a low cost of living, great health care, cost-efficient housing prices and several living environments to choose from. Retirees can settle down in quiet mountain towns, small fishing villages or large cosmopolitan cities. Other retirement amenities include discounts on utilities, taxes and entertainment, as well as half-price airfares.
