Restoration brings out the life and natural color of antique wood furniture.
Antique furniture tends to collect layers of dirt and grime over the years, a condition which requires special care and cleaning to repair. Homeowners who prefer the antique look should educate themselves on the special cleaning methods associated with these classic designs. Proper cleaning requires certain cleaners and clothes to avoid causing damage. A little time and elbow grease will aid in breathing new life back into historic wood. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Fill a bucket with mild soap and warm water. This solution will help remove dirt and grit that may be caked on the wood. The best type of soap to use is dish soap. Avoid anything abrasive such as laundry soap or soap for a dishwasher. Apply small amounts of this solution at a time and promptly remove it with a clean towel.
2. Wipe down with a commercial grade furniture cleaner. This product should be applied to woodwork with a clean cloth and used as directed by the manufacturer. This will remove any waxy buildup left behind by the soap.
3. Scrub with a toothbrush. A bit of furniture cleaner on a toothbrush or cotton swab will help get into curves, gaps and ornate bits not reachable with the towels.
4. Clean hardware. The cleaning process for hardware will vary a bit depending on the type of handles and hinges present. Most metals will do well with a brass, silver or metal polish. A mixture of flour, vinegar and salt applied with a cloth will also work to remove layers of grit. It is best to remove hardware for cleaning, as it provides an opportunity to do a thorough job.
5. Apply a layer of wax. A wood wax or polish will help bring out the natural shine of the wood. A buffing cloth or shoe brush will help make this process a bit easier.
