Spanish Theme Wedding Ideas

Discover some ideas for throwing a Spanish theme wedding.

Whether you are honoring your Spanish heritage or simply think a Spanish-themed wedding is romantic, multiple options exist to plan for and decorate a Spanish-themed wedding. You can start with the venue you choose to host the wedding and then work the Spanish theme into all the other aspects of the wedding. Decorations, customs and music are but a few of the options where you can weave a Spanish touch to your wedding ceremony and reception.

Venue

Churches with Spanish architecture, a Spanish-American museum, Spanish-style villas and Spanish-style mansions are all options as venues for your Spanish theme wedding. When you choose a venue with a Spanish background, it sets the scene and tone for the theme of the wedding. This can also help you to cut back your spending for decorations in order to transform the venue into a Spanish setting.

Attire

You can also dress the part as well to add to your Spanish theme. Spanish brides generally wear a mantilla veil. While Spanish brides traditionally wore black dresses, you can modify this tradition if you wish by wearing a black shawl or foregoing the black altogether. Along with your bouquet, carry a rosary and a small bible, which is also a wedding tradition in the Spanish culture.

D cor

Traditional Spanish colors for weddings include a mixture of black, white and splashes of red. You can incorporate this color scheme with the linens at the reception using a white table cover with a black overlay and a red table runner. Linen napkins can also be one of the three colors. Hang black wrought-iron lanterns to set the scene---especially for an outdoor wedding reception.

Music

Traditionally, a mariachi band starts to play as the bride and groom exit the church. If not a mariachi band, a guitarist playing Spanish music or a salsa band are two other alternative options. The music can continue or kick off at the wedding reception as well. Spanish-American weddings can combine Spanish and American music options as part of the wedding ceremony and reception.

Food

Paella, which is a rice and seafood dish, is the most popular Spanish wedding meal. Sangria may accompany the meal instead of wine. Some variations on the meal can take place depending on the Spanish country the wedding theme revolves around. For example, in a Mexican-Spanish wedding, the food may include steak, rice and beans, and a spicy tomato sauce instead of paella.
