Solid 4 Case
Screaming Mantis is a boss character in Metal Gear Solid 4. The fight will happen right after you breech Outer Heaven in Act 5. Screaming Mantis, like his predecessor, Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid 1, will read your controller inputs and react accordingly. This means that it will be impossible for you to land any hits at all on Screaming Mantis. Using a particular strategy will assist in winning the fight.
Instructions
1. Place the syringe and an assault rifle into your active items before the fight begins.
2. Inject yourself with the syringe as soon as the fight begins. The syringe will counteract Screaming Mantis's mind reading. As long as your psych gauge is flashing, he will be unable to read your thoughts. Keep the syringe ready to use. Every time your psych gauge returns to normal and stops flashing, use the syringe again.
3. Approach and grab Meryl by holding the "R1" button. While you are holding her, press the "Triangle" button with the syringe readied to inject her. This will break Screaming Mantis's hold over Meryl, knock her unconscious and out of harm's way.
4. Take out all of the "Ghost" Frog units. Screaming Mantis will resurrect them periodically. However, maintaining the numbers low will help preserve your health and eliminate distractions from Screaming Mantis.
5. Locate Screaming Mantis. Typically, she will be sitting on top of the holographic globe in the middle of the room initially. Take aim with your assault rifle. Shoot one of the two little dolls she has hanging off her costume. After a couple of shots, Mantis will revive Meryl and try to force her to harm herself. Grab Meryl and inject her with the syringe again.
6. Repeat Step 5 until you knock the dolls off Screaming Mantis's costume. Collect the dolls before Screaming Mantis does or she will re-attach them. Then you will have to start over on knocking them off once more. It will take approximately four shots per doll to remove them from the costume.
7. Equip the "Mantis" doll and ready it in your weapons box. Shoot Screaming Mantis with one of the souls that the doll releases. Continue holding the "L1" button after the shot and jiggle the sixaxis to deplete Screaming Mantis's life bar.
