Sewing buttons onto a cushion adds visual interest and appeal to the cushion. The buttons alone create detail to break up the appearance of an otherwise plain cushion, but because the button-tying procedure depresses the surface of the cushion, it also adds dimension. If a button breaks loose from a cushion, the cushion will pop up at the point where the button came off, and the cushion will be lopsided. To restore the balanced look of the cushion, you'll need to replace the button.
Instructions
1. With chalk, make a mark on the right side of the cushion where you want the button to be placed.
2. Cut an approximately 24-inch length of button thread and thread it through a large needle. Pull the thread through the needle so the thread is doubled and the ends are even. Do not knot the ends.
3. From the bottom of the cushion, push the needle up through the cushion toward the mark you made indicating where the button should be placed. Hold onto several inches of thread on the bottom.
4. With the needle now on the top of the cushion, insert the needle through the shank of the button. Reinsert the needle into the cushion about 1/4 inch away from where it came up, directing the needle to come down 1/4 inch away from where you inserted the needle on the bottom.
5. While holding the ends of the thread in one hand and the needle in the other, insert the needle into one hole of the flat button and then back up into the second hole of the button. The ends of the thread are now sandwiched between the two-hole button and the cushion. Hold both ends of the thread and cut the thread close to the eye of the needle to release the needle.
6. Pull the ends of the thread tightly to depress the cushion. While still pulling the thread, tie a knot. Clip the ends of the thread 1/2 inch from the knot.
