Help for troubled youth
Alabama offers different programs for troubled teens, including outdoor therapeutic treatment, residential treatment and specific treatments such as boarding schools, drug rehab facilities and youth service centers. Treatment facilities are found in Birmingham and surrounding cities.
Paint Rock Valley
Paint Rock Valley is an outdoor therapeutic program catering to the ages 13 to 18 with accredited classrooms for grades 6 through 12. The main objective of this on-site living facility is to help remedy teenage behavioral problems through positive learning. The teenagers live in cottages and participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding and camping. Residents are also encouraged to use their creativity through art and to learn valuable skills from engine repair to environmental science activities. Common disorders Paint Rock Valley specializes in are Attention Deficit Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and other emotional and behavioral disorders including depression, bipolar and conduct disorders.

Elk River Residential Treatment Program
Elk River Residential Treatment Program, at the Pinnacle Schools, is an 8-week therapeutic program for troubled teens ages 13 to 18. Elk River offers academic classes for middle school, high school and college prep, along with electives and health-related classes. It specialize in behavioral and emotional disorders, but also cater to obesity, poor peer relations and low self-esteem.

Bradford Health Services
Bradford Health Services caters to adolescent drug rehabilitation by providing an inpatient program consisting of counseling, accredited educational services and family participation. This facility also offers outpatient support and a 12-step program to ensure continued success.

Crestwood Youth Services
The Salvation Army offers a program specific to teenagers called Crestwood Youth Services. This program is a resident facility and school for high risk boys and girls from the ages of 12 to 21. Crestwood specializes in providing a safe place for youths to live when their living situation is jeopardized by abuse, neglect or exploitation. During their stay they are provided with tools to help them overcome the emotional and behavioral problems associated with abuse.
