Patio furniture cushions stand up to a lot of abuse from the sun, water and general exposure to the outside world. Even the best cushions will eventually start to fade, rip and break down. Reupholstering the cushions of patio furniture makes sense as the frames remain in good condition for many years. Knowing install the new covers makes this a great do-it-yourself project.
Instructions
1. Select covers in a fabric designed to withstand the elements. Canvas is a popular option that holds up well to the forces of nature and is easy to clean.
2. Unscrew the cushion from the frame or release the hook and loop assembly if the cushions are not loose. Remove any pins or staples and measure the length and width of the patio furniture.
3. Cut the foam to length with a razor knife on a hard surface such as a garage floor. Test fit the foam and make any adjustment required by trimming carefully with the razor knife.
4. Spread the fabric out and place the foam and wood bottom or back in place. Pull the fabric around the foam and mark the point where the pieces meet. Cut the fabric to size and lay it out on a stable surface.
5. Place the cushion and wood support in the center of the fabric and fold the cover until the top and sides are wrinkle-free and straight. Staple the fabric to the wood support with a staple gun, working your way around the cushion. Smooth out any wrinkles as you go and place the newly reupholstered cushion in the frame. Secure the cushion into place if desired and enjoy a day on the patio.
