Neutral Living Room Paint Colors

Beige blends with warm, natural materials.

Living rooms with a neutral color scheme are very versatile and lend themselves to periodic updating with little effort. However, this does not mean that a neutral living room has to have a boring wall color. In fact, any color can be converted to a nuanced, neutral shade with the addition of gray or brown tint. Does this Spark an idea?

White

Although not always obvious, there is an incredible range in shades of white. No other color reflects light like white. White looks clean and simple paired with rustic Scandinavian furnishings, pale wood floors and white linens for a country look. Conversely, white looks urban when combined with black, bold accents and streamlined furniture in a loft space. Be careful when purchasing an inexpensive white paint, as they contain less pigment and will make your room look dingy.

Beige

Beige is a warm, light neutral color that falls halfway between white and brown. Beige walls provide a living room with a hint of color without asserting their presence. Beige blends well with medium wood tones, creating a harmonious space with no abrupt transitions.

Brown

Brown shades range from pale putty to dark chocolate. Medium and deep shades of brown create an intimate space with a warm feel. If you prefer a more open and airier feeling for your living room, choose a light brown.

Gray

Gray is becoming a popular alternative to brown as a neutral interior paint color. In fact, these two colors have quite a few shades in common in the warm gray range. On the other side of the gray scal, blue grays coordinate well with slate, marble and other cool-toned natural materials.

Metallics

Metallic paints, in shades of silver, gold, pewter and platinum, resemble other grays and browns, with an added shimmer effect. Application techniques often determine the level of sheen. Stippling or ragging metallic paints results in a subtle, low-gloss glow, appropriate to fit a neutral living room.

Muted Colors

You can make your own neutral colors by toning down any color. Lightening a color with white will result in a pastel version of the same color. Adding beige paint will lighten and neutralize the color.
