Black ants are an important part of the environment, but can become a nuisance when they infest your yard. Carpenter ants and little black ants are types of ants seen in yards and on lawns. These ants act as nature's garbage cleaners by eating old leaves, wood and food remnants left outdoors. When black ants build a nest in your yard, the repeatedly return to the same sources looking for food. While the presence of a few black ants is helpful, too many can result in damage to your yard and the surrounding areas. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Wheel barrows make it possible to move loads too heavy to carry.
Rid your yard of potential ant homes by throwing out piles of old, rotting wood and unused compost piles. Use a wheel barrow to move heavy items.
2. Pick up and dispose of fallen fruit from fruit trees and unwanted vegetables from gardens. Store trash in airtight garbage containers so ants cannot access the garbage as a food source.
3. Locate all visible ant hills. Pour cornmeal around and into the ant hills. The black ants will eat the cornmeal, then the cornmeal will swell inside them, killing the ants.
4. Scoop out any flavor of jelly from a jar and place it on the ground where you see ants congregating, but cannot locate an ant hill. Observe where the black ants go once they've come to get the jelly. The ants will return to their nest, leading you to another source.
5. Pour undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar, liberally, on the ant trails you've observed as ants travel to their food source and back to the nest. Black ants create a scent trail and use it to return to the source of food. The vinegar odor will act as a deterrent and the ants will not use the trail.
6. Sprinkle boric acid or borax around ant hills, foundations and the perimeter of your garden, if the black ants return after using other removal methods. The boric acid will deter the ants from using that site. Use caution near your garden and any other plants, as boric acid will kill the plants.
