Simple Window Treatment Ideas

What will your windows wear?

You don't have to choose between windows which are bare (and potentially too exposing) or pay for elaborate and expensive styles of window treatment. The basic functions of any window decor choice are to provide privacy when needed, permit some light to shine through during the da, and to complement the design of the room. You can accomplish those objectives with simplicity and elegance. Does this Spark an idea?

Honeycomb Blinds

Also known as cellular shades, this style of window treatment works best for rooms where you want clean lines and a spare, uncluttered look. The shades offer energy efficiency, trapping air so you don't lose the benefits of air conditioning in the summer or heating in the winter. This feature means they also have a slight sound filtering ability. You can select different colors, different levels of light filtering, different textures and top down/bottom up orientation.

Exotic Textiles

If you want a more lush window treatment while still eschewing the over-decorated look, visit an import fabric store either in your city or online. Adapt Indian saris for curtains, adding ribbons to hang them from a curtain rod. The vibrant colors of the Indian palette add an exotic element to a bedroom, living room or dining room. If Japanese austerity is more your style, look into noren, which are two-panel textiles with strong graphic elements.

Window Hardware

Rather than letting the drapery fabric make a statement, select curtains in a neutral color and simple material paired with distinctive hardware. Choose window rod finials evoking classic Greece or modern African. Depending on the overall style of your room, you might prefer finials with sculpted metal leaves, beaded flowers, painted ceramic globes or balls of colored glass.
