Use genuine accessories to authenticate your Mexican-style decor.
Decorate your home with a Mexican style if you enjoy the rustic Southwestern style or wish to celebrate the Mexican culture in your home decor. Choose one room, or your entire house, to display colors and items that reflect the Mexican culture. Mexican-style decor is sometimes referred to as Southwestern or Santa Fe style. Does this Spark an idea?
Basics
Tile can grace the floors, counters or backsplash to add authentic Mexican style. Use terra-cotta tiles or brightly colored tiles with hand-painted designs. Mix it up and create designs out of different-colored tiles. Rustic wood tables, woven chairs and overstuffed, well-worn leather or suede sofas will add to the Mexican-style decor as well. Mix different wood finishes if you want to. Heavy, rustic wood bedroom furniture would fit into your Mexican theme. The room should feel welcoming and comfortable, like a common place for the family to gather.
Colors
Earth tones and bright, festive colors typically make up Mexican-style decor. Paint the walls a dark beige or terra-cotta shade, if you plan on using bright and festive accessories or if you like to update your decor often. Paint each room a different bright color such as red, cobalt blue or yellow, if you plan to keep your furnishings neutral. Install a chair rail and paint the bottom part of the wall white to contrast with the darker paint and to keep the room from feeling dark and gloomy. You aren't restricted to a color palette of two or three colors with Mexican-style decor, but can use a multitude of different colors.
Accessories
Pick accessories that lend themselves to the specific style or element of Mexican decor you favor. Hang sombreros on the walls and drape throws or ponchos over the sofa. Pile throw pillows on the chairs, sofa or bed with Mexican embroidery. Lay woven rugs on the tile floors or over carpet for a genuine feel. Place terra-cotta pots, Mexican pottery, woven baskets and cactus plants around the room. Use embroidered fabric or bright panels as curtains. Line the walls with Mexican-inspired art. Glue bright-colored tiles around a large mirror as the focal point on a large wall. Embellish your Mexican-themed kitchen with dried peppers, chilies and garlic, which will also add a fragrant aroma.
