Ideas For A Spanish Home Interior Design

The color palette used in Spanish interior decorating is derived from nature. Earth tones such as deep reds and oranges (terra cotta) dominate and are used in flooring as well as textiles. Stucco walls bring to mind the walls of an old hacienda and lend themselves to creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Does this Spark an idea?

Walls

Let's begin with the basics--your walls. Walls are the backdrop; they mold and join all of the elements of a room. You might say that they are the frame that holds the interior of your rooms together to create the picture you want to see. So, to create that Spanish décor make your walls them textured and rustic so that they can be the backdrop for the vibrant earthy colors that Spanish décor is famous for. To obtain the stucco look to your walls you can use a textured paint in a pale cream or pale yellow hue or faux finish the walls to imitate stucco.

Flooring

Appropriate Spanish style floor choices are hardwood, stone, ceramic tile or terra cotta tile. Area rugs in vibrant colors drawn from nature will complete the look and add a touch of warmth to the flooring. Note: Natural stone and tile floors do require extra care and need to be protected against scratching and stains.

Furniture

Your furniture should lend itself to the relaxed, warm and yet vibrant Spanish hacienda interior that you want to make. Dark wood is part of the Mediterranean style as well as touches of wrought iron. Distressed tables and carved wood also evoke a Spanish mood. Consider shades of blue and green for the upholstery. Leather is also a popular choice for an accent piece such as a chair or love seat. Put throws of earthen colors over the backs of your couch or chairs.

Accessories

Accessories are the fun part of creating that Spanish villa look. Wrought iron chandeliers and wrought iron candle sconces will add to the warm ambiance of your home. Religious statues and paintings are also characteristic of Spanish design, as are tapestry runners and wall hangings. You can also add pieces of terra cotta pottery.

Touches of greenery throughout will bring the outside into your home. Use silk trees or plants to create a small focal point in a corner. Faux fruits and veggies in brightly painted bowls bring a touch of nature to your house.
