Method Of Painting For A Spanishstyle Wall Finish

Method of Painting for a Spanish-Style Wall Finish

Spanish-style design often elicits images of the sun and beach, with bright colors and details adorning its walls. Achieving the effect of an aged, Spanish wall in your home is simple using a few painting techniques. To complement the style, additional elements such as wrought iron, moldings or cornices can be added. Does this Spark an idea?

Textured Walls

Spanish designs often incorporate stucco and plaster, giving depth to the surface. By applying an aged textured wall treatment, you can achieve this effect. This can be accomplished in two ways: Use a textured paint (which is a thicker latex paint) and apply with a roller to create a stippling effect, or use regular interior paint and apply liberally with a roller, then go back with either a stucco brush or sponge to create a textural dimension.

Multiple Color Tones

Considering the materials used to make walls in Spain (stucco and plaster), a color applied to a wall often will look multitonal. The texture of the walls often allow hints of shadow and light to appear. To achieve this effect on a flat wall surface without adding actual texture to the wall, choose three different paint tones of one color and apply in the following order: The first coat should be a flat base color which covers the entire room. The second coat should be applied by sponging a shade lighter than the base color all over the wall. The third coat (a darker shade than the base color) is again sponged over this.

Painting Trim, Windows and Doors

Spanish design often contrasts bold colors, often seen in elements that break up a wall's surface such as windows and doors. In addition to painting the actual window and door, the trim can be painted an additional color, distinguishing it from both the window and the wall color. For example, an orange wall could be contrasted with a bright blue window with dark brown trim.
