Lamp Shade Projects

Create a new lamp shade for an existing lamp base to update a room.

Tasteful lighting enhances any home's interior design. Lamp shades are very versatile and can be designed to evoke different moods and effects. Children as well as adults can create lamp shade crafts, and a hand-designed lamp shade will always add a welcoming touch to any room. Before you start your lamp shade project, choose a governing theme or idea. The theme should complement your home’s existing decor for maximum impact. Does this Spark an idea?

Ribbon

Ribbon can quickly transform a normal lamp shade into an exquisitely designed lighting feature. A simple, wide ribbon wrapped around the top or base of a lamp shade and tied in a bow will instantly dress it up. You can also use a hot glue gun to adhere ribbon in vertical "stripes" around an entire lamp shade.

Paper

Patterned paper can be used to transform a plain lamp shade. Use a smooth, white lamp shade for this project to showcase the paper's design best. Cut the paper to the dimensions of the lamp shade. Use a paintbrush to coat the lamp shade in a thin coat of crafting glue and wrap the paper around it. Allow the lamp shade to dry for 24 hours before use.

Fabric

Fabric can be used to make interchangeable slipcovers for a lamp shade. Measure the lamp shade and make a paper pattern in its dimensions to use as a guide when cutting the fabric. Cut the fabric slightly larger than the pattern to help it slip easily over the shade. After the fabric has been cut, hem the top and bottom edges and sew the raw ends together to make a simple tube. Make a slipcover for each season and swap them out as seasons change to add interest to your room.
