Uses Of Red Oak Wood

oak tree

The Northern Red Oak (Quercus rubra) grows up to 90 feet tall and is found in northeastern United States forests. It grows fast and is a hardy tree that may live for many centuries. As it is one of the most important timber trees in North America, the wood of the northern red oak is highly prized. It is used as flooring, to make furniture and as raw material for building. Does this Spark an idea?

Floors

One of the most popular flooring choices today, red oak is a dense, shock- and wear-resistant wood. It is more porous and has less tannin than other floors, qualities that make it more impervious to stains that can result from bleach or certain finishes. The grain of red oak, depending on how the wood is sawn, can display itself in several patterns, including tiger ray, flared, plumed, flake and butterflies. Every red oak floor is visually different, because the boards can vary markedly in appearance based on factors such as growing season and subspecies.

Furniture

Red oak makes excellent furniture. It stains easily and wears well. The wood is used to make handsome dressers, chests, frames, bureaus, tables, desks, wardrobes and beds. Red oak is used to make all styles of furniture, but it is especially sought after for making Mission furniture because of the unique, long rays seen in the grain. "Mission" refers to the Spanish missions prevalent in California in the late 19th century, in which simple, plain oak was commonplace. This style of furniture is still very popular today.

Building

Red oak is utilized in many applications in building and construction. It is used for making mine timbers, pallets, fence posts, caskets, casks, ships, paneling, veneers, interior residential trim, kegs, railroad ties, boxes, crates, handles, truck beds and trailer beds. Red oak sands well, glues easily and resists splitting. It is commonly planted as an ornamental tree in parks and outside of homes and businesses because of its proportioned crown and colorful fall foliage. In addition, it makes good fuel wood for burning.
