Tips On Waxing Wood Floors

Prolong the life of hardwood floors by waxing them regularly.

Waxing wood floors is one task that many people tend to dread. When it is done right many do not take notice. However, when it is done wrong it is hard to not take notice. There are a variety of time-tested tips available so the next floor waxing will be successful. Does this Spark an idea?

Floor Waxes

The right type of wax finish will protect floors from dirt and moisture.

There are three basic floor waxes, water-based, polymer-based and solvent-based. For wood floors avoid waxes that are water-based, they are best if used on tile or vinyl flooring. Waxes that are solvent-based will need buffing, while polymer waxes do not. Polymer waxes have a tendency to dull wood floors quickly and can make the surface slippery. Try not to over wax a floor, instead buff the floor in between waxing. Occasionally skip putting wax on areas that are not high-traffic areas and underneath furniture.

Wax Buildup and Stripping

Be sure to test the stripping solution on an area of floor that is unnoticeable.

Even though keeping wood floors waxed will prolong the life of your floors, sooner or later the floors will begin to show a waxy buildup.Floors will begin to show a yellowish tinge or a grimy, cloudy haze on the surface. When this happens it will be time to strip the floors.

For stripping the floors it is best to find a stripping solution that is rinse-free as that will save time. Some other tools and materials needed aside from rubber gloves, wet/dry vaccum, mop, dustpan, etc. will be two buckets--one for clean water and the other for the stripping solution.

When stripping floors it is best to start from the farthest corner of the room and work your way toward the door. Try not to use too much solution on one area of the room it could cause the floor to warp or stain. Be sure to follow the instruction set forth by the manufacturer as far as timing for the solution to ensure the process is done correctly.

Additonal Information

Stay on top of spills in between waxes, especially if there are any small children or pets in the home. Allowing spills to dry on a waxed floor will only cause a grime attracting surface.

Sweep wood floors daily to keep dirt from embedding into the wax in areas with high traffic. Once a week or so, take a damp mop to remove any sticky substances. Another way to reduce damage to waxed floors in high traffic areas by using area rugs or have an area where family and guests can remove their shoes.

Furniture can also damage a wood floor, use fabric glides underneath the legs of chairs, sofas, tables, etc. That will keep dents, scuffs and scratches to a minimum.
