Methods To Polish Wood

Wood is a durable, renewable resource that is found in a variety of different colors and styles. It is often used in furniture or as trim throughout homes and offices. Bare wood by itself is subject to stress and aging from the atmosphere, the environment, contaminants such as cigarette smoke and other factors that can cause it to wear, darken, discolor or appear unattractive. To make wood last longer and look good over a long period of time, you can use a wood polish or wax to fill the wood's pores and protect it from the environment. There are a number of different methods for polishing wood that can be effective. Does this Spark an idea?

Hand Polishing with Wax

Using a wax and polishing the wood by hand is an easy and inexpensive method for polishing wood. There are a number of different waxes that are suitable for different types and colors of wood, and you will want to pick the one that best fits the style and color you are trying to achieve. For example, there are colored waxes available that can stain and refinish natural wood in order to give it a different appearance, and there are some waxes that are clear or yellow in color, such as pine wax, that will bring a great finish to natural wood, showing off the beauty of the grain.

Wax Polish

Wax polish will appear to be a shiny finish when it is cured, similar to automotive wax. The proper way to use wax polish is to apply it, allow it to sit for the specified time, then buff it off lightly with a rag or cloth in order to bring a high shine to the surface.

Automotive Buffing Tools

Wood can be polished using automatic buffing tools similar to a car wax finish buffing wheel. These tools operate at high speeds and you must be comfortable with the operation of them in order to avoid burning or damaging the wood surface. You must also use the proper waxes and polishes with these devices.

Vegetable Oil

One inexpensive way to polish wood is to apply vegetable oil to bare wood in order to provide a protective, water-resistant finish to the surface. To use vegetable oil, apply a thin coat to the surface being polished using a soft cloth. Rub in well, and remove excess oil using a clean cotton or microfiber cloth.
