Recover A Herman Miller Reaction

An old office Herman Miller Reaction chair can be recovered for a modern look.

Herman Miller is a company that specializes in ergonomic furniture designs. The company's furniture designs are for home and office. Herman Miller's office chair design "Reaction" debuted in 1998 and are no longer sold. Reaction chairs were sold in basic solid colors with a sturdy weave fabric. Recovering a Herman Miller Reaction with a new fashionable fabric can be an easy affair, requiring a few basic tools.

Instructions

1. Disassemble the Reaction chair. Unscrew the seat and seat back from the pedestal, armrests and back brace using the Allen wrench. Set the pedestal, armrests and back brace. The plastic backs to the seat and the seat back will still be attached at the end of this step.

2. Wedge the flat-head screw driver between the seat and its plastic backing. Carefully pry the seat and plastic backing apart. Two loud pops will be heard once the backing releases. Take care not to tear the canvas fabric hidden beneath the plastic. Repeat this step to separate the seat back from its plastic backing.

3. Remove the staples from the fabric back of the seat and seat back. Remove the top fabric and lay it out flat.

4. Use sharp scissors to precisely cut the fabric.

Spread the new fabric flat on a table or the floor. Lay the old fabric in separate pieces on top of the new fabric. Cut the new fabric to size using the old fabric as a pattern.

5. Lay the seat and seat back face down on top of the newly cut fabric. Peel back the canvas backing one inch around all edges.

6. Tighten the new fabric around the seat and seat back. Gather the fabric at the corners neatly for finish. Fold the edges of the fabric under the peeled canvas. Staple the fabric through the canvas.

7. Reassemble the chair. Pop the plastic backing back onto the seat and seat back. Reattach the brace and pedestal to the seat and seat back.
