Antique cedar armoires can be wonderful pieces of furniture and are often passed down through generations. Over time the finish on these cabinets can wear off or become very dull. Refinishing an armoire gives it a new look and preserves it for generations to come. Precautions are very important during this project: proper ventilation, safety glasses, gloves and old clothing will help protect you from injury. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Apply wood stripper with a paintbrush following the manufacturer's directions.
2. Remove the stripper with a stiff putty knife and steel wool. Repeat this process until all of the paint, lacquer or old stain has been removed.
3. Fill any deep scratches or dent with stainable wood putty. Allow the putty to dry then sand to a smooth finish.
4. Sand the entire armoire to a smooth finish. Clean the armoire with a damp rag to remove any sawdust.
5. Apply a thin coat of wood stain with a rag. Allow the stain to dry, lightly sand, and then apply a second coat.
6. Paint the armoire with polyurethane using a foam paintbrush. If the armoire will be exposed to water or other damaging elements, apply a second coat.
