Repair a Broken Door Frame
Over time, door frames can become broken. Most doors need a solid door frame to properly work. If your door frame is broken or cracked, you can repair the door frame without completely replacing it. Instructions
1. Remove the door from the door frame with a screwdriver.
2. Remove the weatherstripping on the door jamb. Not all doors have weatherstripping, but exterior doors should have it.
3. Remove the door casings from around the door frame, using a pry bar and putty knife. Do this carefully so that the casings can be reinstalled later. Set the casings aside in a safe place.
4. Cut away the broken part of the door frame, using a circular saw. Remove the wood jamb completely. The circular saw may not be able to cut the entire jamb away from the door, so use a wood chisel to remove the rest of the jamb.
5. Measure the width and length of the old door jamb, using a measuring tape. Transfer the measurements to the 1-by-6 board with a pencil. Use a table saw to cut the 1-by-6 board to size.
6. Push the new board into place in the door frame. If the board does not fit, you may need to measure and cut again until it fits nicely into place. Nail the board into place with a nail gun and 2-inch finish nails.
7. Caulk the door frame and reinstall weatherstripping if necessary. Install the hardware and the door.
