Styles For Making Your Own Headboard

The headboard is often the focal point of any bedroom.

If you choose to design and build your own headboard, you have the freedom to create one that will perfectly meet your needs. Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, so this is your opportunity to make a big statement in your room scheme. You could choose to add a personal touch to an old headboard by simply changing the color or adding fabric. Or, you can start from scratch building your headboard that is custom fit for your bedroom design scheme. Does this Spark an idea?

Storage

If storage is an issue in your bedroom, you may choose to make a headboard that features organized space to house your belongings. For this style, you may choose to repurpose an old shelving unit or bookshelf to function as a headboard to store books, picture frames or other decorative items. If you make your headboard on your own, you will want to make measurements according to the height and width of your mattress, adjusting accordingly you so you can sit up comfortably in your bed without hitting your head on the headboard. If the storage is too low or too deep, it may become a nuisance.

Upholstered

Upholstered headboards can be made to fit with any design scheme. They are also one of the easier headboard styles to accomplish. This style can be appropriate for any bedroom décor; the fabric will be what makes your headboard fit aesthetically in your space. Coordinate your upholstered headboard with your bedding, curtains and rugs. This fabric can be used to emphasize a certain type of décor. For example, a toile fabric will highlight a French Country décor.

Tufted

A tufted headboard is also made of upholstery foam, cotton batting and fabric. Like ordinary upholstered headboard, it is ideal for resting against as a headboard. What makes a headboard tufted are the buttons inserted through the fabric through the back of the headboard and causing a tuft in the fabric. To accomplish this headboard style, holes are predrilled in the back of the headboard. Once the foam, cotton and fabric are in place, a button is threaded through and pulled tight. This adds a level of elegance to a headboard, while offering another opportunity to add a decorative touch to the bed.
