Refinish An Armoire

An armoire is an elegant piece of furniture that can serve as an attractive housing for your wardrobe. With proper care and maintenance, your armoire can last for generations. After some years of wear and tear, refinishing your armoire may be necessary to keep it looking handsome. With some effort and patience, you can restore your armoire to the graceful look it originally had. You'll need a few tools and supplies to begin the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the old finish with chemical stripper. Apply a thick coat of stripper on the armoire's surface with a clean brush.

2. Wait for the stripper to set. The old finish on the armoire will begin to peel.

3. Scrape the old finish off the armoire with a putty knife. Scrub hard-to-reach spots off the old finish with a medium-grade steel wool.

4. Sand the entire surface of the armoire with 220-grit sandpaper to remove the rest of the old finish. Wipe the armoire clean of dust and excess chemicals with a cloth.

5. Coat the armoire with a heavy coat of sanding sealer using a clean brush. Allow the armoire to dry before proceeding to the next step.

6. Apply a thin coat of stain to the armoire with a clean brush using long, even strokes. Wipe the armoire clean of excess stain with a cloth. Brush on further thin coats of stain to create a darker finish.

7. Finish the armoire by applying a thin coat of polyurethane. This will protect the armoire's new finish from dirt and moisture.
