Master'S Programs In Art History

Columbia, in New York, offers a master's and Ph.D. in art history.

In the humanities, which typically comprise intellectually stimulating subjects with few job prospects outside of academia, art history is an exception. With an advanced degree in the field, you have the option of entering a variety of jobs, such as museum director, curator, editor of an art magazine, art journalist or teacher.

Columbia University

Columbia University offers a two-year master's degree program in art history. While the first year involves course work, the second year is devoted to research and writing of the master's thesis. In addition, Columbia offers a Ph.D. program in the subject. Those who wish to pursue the Ph.D. finish the M.A. portion in one year, rather than two. Areas of concentration include architectural history, the Italian or Northern Renaissance, ancient art and Asian art.

Williams College

Williams College has a two-year program in history of art leading to the Master of Arts degree. Students have the opportunity to do not only standard classroom work in art history, but also to pursue internships in the field, travel and participate in symposiums related to the field. Each winter, students are required to go on a class trip to Europe, where they get to see original works of art in museums. The trip lasts three weeks and most of the expenses are covered by the university, with the exception of lunch, dinner and entrance to museums. Possible areas of study include violence and artistic representation, portraiture, methods of art history and criticism, arte povera and history painting.
