Water A Jacaranda

Jacarandas need water during drought conditions.

Gardeners in warm areas the world over plant jacaranda trees for their wide canopies, feathered foliage and brilliant purple flowers. As an added bonus, the jacaranda is easy to grow. It thrives on poor soil and little attention. And, it is drought tolerant. Although it can survive a drought, prolonged dry periods will keep it from thriving. During the growing season, water your jacaranda once every two weeks if there is no rain. In the dormant season when your jacaranda is leafless, water once or twice during periods of severe drought when there is no rain for four weeks or more. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place a rain gauge (a graduated cylinder or container with a ruler) on the soil underneath the canopy of the jacaranda tree at least 1 foot away from the trunk.

2. Water the soil in a circle 1.5 times the diameter of the jacaranda tree's canopy with a spray from the hose. Avoid wetting the jacaranda tree's trunk. Apply the water evenly around the tree.

3. Stop watering when your rain gauge shows that you have applied 3 inches of water to the tree.
