Ways To Cover Bar Stools

Ways to Cover Bar Stools

Re-covering bar stools is a fairly easy job. You can complete a set of four bar stools in a matter of four to six hours. Your choices for covering bar stools range from leather to paint products to textured fabric. No matter what material you use, chances are good that you will create a bar stool that has beauty and durability. Does this Spark an idea?

Using Fabric and Other Material

Shop for fabric or a different material that catches your eye and fits with the decor of the room in which the bar stools will be placed. Another option is to look around your house for old clothing such as denim jeans or shirts to cover the bar stools. You also can use old rock 'n' roll T-shirts or old leather jackets. If you use fabric or leather to cover the bar stools, measure the size of the stool seat and allow for an extra 2 inches on each side.

Also purchase a piece of foam to secure to each seat. This will help to provide a cushion when people sit down.

If the bar stools are already covered, remove the screws or staples located on the bottom of each stool to remove the covering.

When cutting the material that will cover the stools, use a bar stool seat as your pattern and cut around the stool seat, leaving the extra 2 inches of material on each side. This will allow for the overlap of material to help secure the seat cushion to the wood on the bottom of the stool.

Ensure that each stool is free of residual debris. Apply a piece of foam to each stool by using a quality glue. Once you have the fabric or other material cut, attach it to each stool using a staple gun. Pulling the material tight releases possible wrinkles.

Using Paint and Finishes

You also may paint a design on top of the stools using stencil cutouts. Lightly sanding the stools before painting helps the paint to adhere. Use a washable latex paint that is easy to clean up in case of spills.

If painting or using material does not interest you, then consider adding a finish or a stain to your bar stools.

You also can purchase spray paint for wood that gives a marbleized appearance to the stools. If you desire a shiny look, you can finish the stools with silver or black metallic paints.
