Install Ipod Linux On 4g Or Nano With Windows And Johnny West Installer

It can be difficult to install iPod Linux onto an iPod Nano or 4G because the typical Linux installs don't work on these versions. The best way to install Linux on a 4G or Nano is with Windows and a Johnny West Installer.

Instructions

Install With Windows

1. Verify the model and generation of the iPOd that you own. Choose the iPod Linux distribution that is most compatible with your iPod.

2. Perform a backup of the files on your iPod then plug your iPod into your Windows computer. Open iTunes and put it in disk mode by clicking "Edit Menu" and "Preferences" followed by the button labeled "iPod" at the top of the screen. Check the box labeled "Enable Disk Use."

3. Log on to iPodLinux and download the installer compatible with your iPod 4G or Nano. Download Installer 2 for the easiest and quickest installation, then just follow the prompts.

Install With the Johnny West Installer

4. Download the Johnny West Installer from the iPodlinux website if you haven't already done so. Stuff the file using a zip program if necessary then extract it to a folder in your documents titled "Linux Folder" or "iPod Linux Folder." Open this folder and click on the sub-folder titled "iPod Linux." From here open the folder titled, "Ipl Installer" and locate the file "ipodlinux-installer.exe."

5. Verify that you still have your iPod plugged into the computer. Run the .exe file making sure that the box titled "Check for online updates" isn't checked. Select the option to perform a backup then click through the prompts.

6. Boot the iPod with Apple OS then complete the final steps in the Johnny West Installer making sure not to access any other programs in the computer until you finish. Copy the two files "Podzilla" and "Start" located in the folder titled "Put These Files in iPod Root After Installing." Double click the iPod as an external drive to view the iPod in disk mode, then paste the two files into it.

7. Close the iPod drive and the iPod Linux folders. Right-click on the iPod icon and select "Eject" then shut down iTunes and unplug the iPod. The iPod should restart instantly.

8. Switch the iPod to hold after the Apple Logo pops up on the screen. A picture of a penguin listening to an iPod should appear for a second then disappear followed by boot sequence. Turn off the hold switch and watch as your iPod boots into Podzilla, which is the user interface.
