A fiberglass door can not compete with the beauty and uniqueness of wood unless it has been painted to imitate the appearance of wood. You can stain a fiberglass door so that it appears to be a wood door. A few supplies from a hardware store or a home and garden shop will be needed, as will some tools most do-it-yourself project lovers already have on hand. The fiberglass door does not need to be removed from its frame for this work. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Open the fiberglass door. Place a plastic tarp beneath the door. Cover any metal fittings or locks with strips of painter's tape. Pull the weather stripping from the frame and the bottom of the door with your hands, and put it aside.
2. Apply mineral oil to a clean cloth. Wipe the surface of the door with the cloth to remove loose dirt and grime. Mask the edges of the door that are not to be stained with painter's tape.
3. Apply wood stain to a rag. Rub the rag over the surface of the door, beginning with the edges. Reapply wood stain to the rag as necessary to apply stain to the side of the door.
4. Wipe the excess stain off the door with long, even strokes of a paint brush, starting at one side of the door and finishing the stroke at the other side. Repeat this procedure to remove excess stain from the door edges. Let the stain set for the time specified in the instructions on the can.
5. Brush the door with the clear topcoat finish in the same manner as was done with the stain. Let the topcoat finish dry for the amount of time specified in the instructions on the can before applying a second coat. Repeat this an additional time.
6. Repeat the entire procedure, starting with the painter's tape, on the other side of the fiberglass door.
7. Remove the painter's tape from the door. Remove the plastic tarp from beneath the door. Close your "wood" door.
