The Best Public Schools Near Raleigh North Carolina

There are nine schools near Raleigh designated as Honor Schools of Excellence.


As a parent, choosing the right school for your child can be a difficult and agonizing decision. The North Carolina State Board of Education performs a yearly assessment of all public and charter schools throughout North Carolina, assessing them on a number of criteria, including class size, specialized course enrollments and performance on standardized tests. Schools are granted the highest designation, Honor School of Excellence, if at least 90 percent of students perform at grade level and the school achieves Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind Act. Out of the 159 schools in Wake County, where the state capital of Raleigh is located, nine are designated as an Honor School of Excellence.


Elementary Schools


There are two elementary schools in Wake County with the designation of Honor School of Excellence that utilize a traditional school calendar. Cedar Fork Elementary, located in Morrisville, has an enrollment of 842 students from kindergarten to the fifth grade. All of teachers at Cedar Fork Elementary are designated by the North Carolina State Board of Education as highly qualified. Davis Drive Elementary School, located in Cary, has an enrollment of 955 students from kindergarten to the fifth grade. More than 95 percent of students at Davis Drive Elementary read and perform math at or above grade level.


Middle Schools


There is one middle school in Wake County with the designation of Honor School of Excellence that utilizes a traditional school calendar. Apex Middle School, located in Apex, serves 1,013 students from the sixth through eighth grades. More than 95 percent of students at Apex Middle performed at or above grade level on the end-of-year ABC tests administered by the North Carolina State Board of Education. More than 60 percent of teachers at Apex Middle have at least 10 years of teaching experience.


High Schools


There is one high school in Wake County with the designation of Honor School of Excellence. The Wake Early College of Health and Science admits 207 students from ninth grade through 12th grade via an admissions process. Students at Wake Early College can graduate in five years with a high school degree and an associate degree in arts, science or applied sciences. Students are able to take college-level courses, which are transferable to a four-year university.


Year-Round Elementary Schools


There are three elementary schools in Wake County which meet the designation of Honor School of Excellence that utilize a year-round calendar. Highcroft Elementary, located in Cary, has an enrollment of 766 students. All of the teachers at Highcroft Elementary are designated as highly qualified. Mills Park Elementary, also located in Cary, has an enrollment of 801 students. All of the teachers at Mills Park Elementary are designated as highly qualified. Morrisville Elementary, located in Morrisville, serves 818 students. All of the teachers at Morrisville Elementary are designated as highly qualified.


Year-Round Middle Schools


There are two middle schools in Wake County which meet the designation of Honor School of Excellence and utilize a year-round calendar. Lufkin Road Middle School, located in Apex, has an enrollment of 1,170 sixth- through eighth-grade students. All of the teachers at Lufkin Road Middle School are designated as highly qualified. More than 95 percent of students at Lufkin Road Middle School performed at or above grade level on the end-of-year ABC tests. Salem Middle School, also located in Apex, has an enrollment of 1,328 sixth- through eighth-grade students. More than 95 percent of Salem Middle School performed at or above grade level on the end-of-year ABC tests in reading, math and science. All of the teachers at Salem Middle School are designated as highly qualified.
