Walmart Grants

The Walmart Foundation offers scholarships as well as grants to local nonprofits.

The Walmart Foundation states that its extensive giving program underscores its commitment to improving communities as well as the lives of the people who live in them. The primary initiatives that the Foundation supports include education, workforce development, health and wellness, and environmental sustainability. The foundation provides support through financial grants including Walmart's Scholarship Programs, State and National Giving Programs, and Walmart Store and Sam's Club Giving Programs. Walmart has also made a $2 billion commitment through 2015 to reduce hunger in the United States.

The Walmart Dependent Scholarship

The Walmart Dependent Scholarship is a one-time $3,000 education grant that helps provide funding for a college education. The recipient can use funds to cover expenses such as tuition fees, books, and on-campus accommodation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with a minimum GPA of 2.5, must demonstrate financial need, and must be the dependents of a Walmart employee who has completed a minimum service period of six months with the company.

Walmart Store and Sam's Club Giving Program

Through the Walmart Store and Sam's Club Giving Program, the Walmart Foundation supports local charitable organizations that seek funding. All organizations that have a tax-exempt status with the IRS and are legitimate government-approved entities are eligible, as long as they support community improvements including churches, law enforcement and fire departments, schools, and colleges. The foundation accepts applications Feb. 1 through Dec. 31 and awards one grant per year per organization. The minimum grant award is $250, and the availability of funds is limited.

State Giving Program

Walmart's State Giving Program funds nonprofit organizations that serve a particular region or state and need financial assistance to support programs. Grants start at $25,000 and have no upper limit. The recipient organization must have a tax-exempt status with the IRS to qualify. The foundation accepts applications for the Northwest Arkansas region all year round; deadlines for other regions are announced on its website.

National Giving Program

The National Giving Program of the Walmart Foundation supports nonprofit charitable organizations that serve multiple sites and operate programs on a national scale. Apart from tax-exempt status, the organization must also be recognized as a public charity by the IRS and must demonstrate the capacity to support national expansion. An organization can get a National Giving Program grant only once per the Foundation's fiscal year. The minimum grant given through this program is $250,000.
