Make A Slipcover For A Foot Stool

Removable slipcovers make footstools easy to clean.

Keeping foot stools and ottomans clean and fresh is easy by using removable slipcovers that attach with Velcro. Updating the style and look of your home furnishings by simply alternating fabric slipcovers and pillows is an inexpensive way to make desired design changes as well. Anchoring the living area or family room with just a few neutral colored furniture pieces lets you dress the room for a variety of occasions and seasons. Because the fabric on foot stools and ottomans tends to wear quickly, using a slipcover which can be removed will extend the life of the furniture piece. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the length and the width of the top of the foot stool. Add 5/8 of an inch to each side of this measurement. Measure the length and width of each side panel of the foot stool and add 5/8 of an inch to each of the vertical side measurements and 1 3/8 of an inch to each of the bottom horizontal measurements..

2. Cut out the top piece of fabric as well as the side panels according to the measurements taken in Step 1. Pin the vertical side seams together with the patterned fabric sides facing each other. Sew the sides together using 5/8-inch seams.

3. Pin the edges of the top piece of fabric to the top edges of the sewn side panels. Check the material to ensure the patterned sides of the fabric face each other. Sew the pieces together using a 5/8-inch seam.

4. Turn the bottom edges of the sewn side panels under 1/4 of an inch and press them with a hot iron. Lay one of the separated halves of the sew-on Velcro along the edge of the ironed hem. Pin the Velcro in place so that it lies face up and even with the edge.

5. Top stitch the Velcro in place by sewing two parallel lines along the edge of the printed side of the fabric. Lay the slipcover inside out and pin the two remaining raw material edges together so they are even with each other. Sew a 5/8-inch seam down the side edge of the fabric.

6. Measure the length and the width of each of the four sides of the foot stool. Cut four pieces of self-adhesive Velcro accordingly. Separate the two halves of self-adhesive Velcro strips.

7. Turn the foot stool over and lay the halves of the Velcro strips that correspond to the sewn strips along the bottom edges. Staple the Velcro strips in place and pull the slipcover over the foot stool. Secure the slipcover to the underside of the frame.
