Japanese Bedroom Styles

Japanese decor is simple and elegant.

The minimalist Japanese style focuses heavily on the "less is more" mantra--sophistication via utter simplicity. Decorating your bedroom in a Japanese-esque fashion is not different in that respect from the rest of your home. Using Japanese techniques for your decor can achieve the modern look for your bedroom that the Japanese have been utilizing for centuries. Does this Spark an idea?

Furniture

The furniture that is typically used in Japanese culture is close to the ground to give it a centered feel. The bed you use for your Japanese-style bedroom should be as low as possible. Additionally, any furniture that you use for your bedroom should have a purpose--Japanese style dictates that the room be as minimalist as possible. If a piece of furniture doesn't have a use, it doesn't have a place in a Japanese bedroom.

Color Scheme

The colors that the Japanese use to decorate their homes are reminiscent of nature. This includes shades of beige that are evocative of the beach, subdued greens for plants and pale blues for the sky. You can incorporate any one of these color choices or a combination of them into your bedroom walls, bed linens and any other furniture or decoration.

Decoration

For starters, the furniture in your Japanese bedroom can serve as decoration. Each article of furniture should be as multi-purpose as possible. One purpose could be decoration--to keep in the Japanese style, make sure that your bed and any other furniture are geometrically pleasing to the eye. For example, your bed can have a headboard of polished wood with geometric shapes. Also, furniture can contrast with other furniture in the room--you don't need to have a matching set.

Other decorative elements within a Japanese-style bedroom should be sparse and typically consist of natural materials like wood, bamboo and rice paper. You can decorate your bed or any chairs or benches in the room with silk cushions or use silk curtains for the windows, but the walls typically are free of decoration except for one or two choice framed pictures or art pieces, preferably right above the bed. Floors typically are bare as well, but if that's not a possibility you should opt for carpet or rugs with a natural look and feel.
