Restore Teak Outdoor Furniture

Teak patio furniture: brand new and after patina

Teak patio furniture has become increasingly popular, especially when used outdoors. When teak patio sets are new, the wood is a beautiful honey color. After prolonged exposure to the sun, the wood color weathers to a silver-gray color. It's relatively simple to restore your teak patio furniture back to its original color. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the Teak Patio Furniture

Apply a 2 to 1 solution of mild detergent with water to the teak patio furniture. Use a soft bristle brush to help remove the gray patina. The brush will do a good job of removing most of the patina if your teak patio set is only a few years old.

If your outdoor furniture has been weathered for a longer period of time, after cleaning, use a fine-grade sandpaper to remove the most outer layer of the furniture. You can also use a chemical stripper, which can be found at most home-improvement or marine supply stores.

2. Apply Teak Oil

Apply teak oil to help brighten the teak patio set and give it luster. The oil does not protect the teak patio furniture from future weathering; it only helps to bolster its appearance.

3. Preserve the Look

To keep teak patio sets looking new and with a honey hue, use waterproof outdoor furniture covers whenever your teak patio furniture is not in use. These outdoor furniture covers will help to shield the teak from the sun's damaging UV rays, as well as to protect it from other outdoor elements.

4. Consider Storing Teak Patio Sets

To keep your teak looking new, bring it indoors when it's not in use for an extended period of time. Any outdoor furniture ideally should be brought inside during the colder months, but teak and other woods deserve special consideration. Because woods tend to expand and contract, be sure not to move the teak patio furniture from one extreme to another too quickly. Instead, move it from your patio, to the garage, and then into your home over the course of a few days. This will help to prevent teak patio sets from splitting.
