Make An Outdoor Wood Chair

A backyard in the summertime is an incredible place. Be it sipping a lemonade with your family or staring at the night sky with a special someone, the summer can be a magical time. Making some chairs for the back yard can make this magical time easier to have. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Preparation

1. Measure and cut the pieces with the table saw: two front legs at 26 inches long, and two back legs at 36 inches long; four seat supports at 14 1/2 inches long; a front and back pieces cut to 21 3/4 inches; two side rails and two center supports cut to 23 inches each; a pair of 6-inch support blocks; two arms at 23 1/2 inches; and six cleats at 3 1/2 inches.

2. Make the seat slats. Cut some pieces to 24 inches and then split them into 1 1/2-inch-wide pieces, and make two slats that are 23 inches wide. For the back slats, make three pieces at 24 inches wide.

3. Cut the pieces into shapes. For the side rails and center supports, starting and ending 2 1/2 inches in on both ends, cut your choice of seat contour into the tops. Measure and mark 3 1/2 inches from the back end of one armrest, and then mark out 1 inch and 1 3/4 inches from either side. Make a rectangle from those three marks, and cut out that notch. Repeat for the other armrest.

4. Sand all of the pieces to remove splinters.

Assembly

5. Squeeze some glue onto the face of a seat support, and then lay the front leg piece on top so the bottoms align. Screw the two pieces together through the seat support. Repeat for the other front leg piece and the back legs.

6. Lay a back and front leg assembly parallel to each other. Place a side rail between the two so it sits in the corner created by the leg and the side support, and leaves about a 1-inch gap between the front or back of the chair and the corresponding end of the side rail. Glue and screw the rail into place. Repeat this step, mirrored for the other rail and legs, to create the side assemblies.

7. Locate the center of the front and back chair frame pieces, and glue and screw the support blocks at the center of those pieces. After completing one of the pieces, use it as a guide for the other.

8. Squeeze some glue into the space created on a front leg by the side rail. Hold the front piece perpendicular to the side assembly, and push it into place. Screw through the front piece into the side rail. Repeat for the back rail on this side.

9. Screw and glue the center supports to the support blocks. Glue one center support on either side of the support blocks and screw them into place.

10. Glue the other side support into place on the front and back rails, and then screw it into place through the front and back pieces.

11. Screw through the front and back legs into the front and back piece as well, then flip the chair over and repeat. Flip the chair upright.

12. Glue and nail the wider seat slats into place over the front and back pieces of the chair frame. Glue and nail the narrow seat slats into the contour of the seat.

13. Glue two cleats to either side of a leg piece, where it sticks up above the seat. Screw them into place to form a flat surface. Repeat for the other front leg.

14. Put the slot of one arm around the protruding back leg, then hold the front of the arm on top of the surface. Mark the bottom of the arm on the back leg. Repeat on the other side.

15. Screw and glue the remaining cleats to the outsides of the chair on the position you marked above. Attach the armrests to the cleats using glue and finish nails.

16. Install the back slats across the back. Glue and nail one of them into place below, and two above the armrests.
