Remodel Rvs & Trailers

Customize your RV or trailer to meet your specific living needs

Remodel your RV or trailer to update the tired, worn or outdated decor. While you are at it, use a little imagination and create a custom design to give yourself more space inside your RV or trailer. Flooring, walls, window coverings and furniture can all be redone or replaced to create a comfortable and homey living space. Remodeling RVs and trailers is similar to remodeling standard homes, with a couple of exceptions--space and mobility must be accounted for. Do the remodeling work yourself and save big bucks compared to the costs of having it done by a professional. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Reupholster or replace the furniture. Replacing furniture gives you more designing options, because you can choose entirely different styles and types of furniture. Purchase new furniture specifically designed for RVs and trailers at RV supply stores or buy standard house furniture. Measure the space in your RV or trailer so that you will know what size furniture you can buy. Also, measure the door of your RV to make sure the new furniture will fit through the door. Unbolt and remove the old furniture. It is usually bolted to both the floors and the walls. Bolt in new RV furniture or use metal L-brackets to secure regular house furniture to the RV floor.

2. Take down outdated or unattractive window blinds, curtains and valances and replace them with new more-appealing ones. RV and trailer manufacturers too often install tacky window coverings. This is especially true in older units -- favoring functionality over eye appeal. There is no reason you can't have window coverings that are both functional and attractive. Measure your windows and purchase blinds or curtains that appeal to your sense of style and that match your new decor. For a larger selection of design options, shop for standard house blinds and curtains.

3. Replace the flooring in your RV for a new look. Many types of standard house floorings work well in RVs and trailers, with the exception of heavier stone, natural wood flooring and grouted tile. RV and trailer flooring should be lightweight so it does not add to the weight-load of the vehicle. Vinyl stick-on tiles, linoleum flooring and interlocking laminate flooring are wise choices for recreational vehicles because they are attractive, easy to care for and lightweight.

4. Paint or re-paper the walls to match your new decor and to liven up your RV or trailer. Examine the type of interior walls your RV or trailer has underneath the paint or wallpaper. There are several types of interior walls found inside RVs and trailers, including drywall, untreated sheets of wood, wood paneling, metal sheeting and vinyl panels. Choose to paint or apply wallpaper based on the attractiveness and texture of your interior walls. For example, both paint and wallpaper work well on drywall, but only wallpaper would look good over untreated sheets of wood, and paint works best over metal walls.
