Wood Stain Won'T Soak In

Properly sanded wood will absorb stain.

The most common reason for a piece of wood to not soak up a stain application is improper preparation. Poor sanding or failing to remove existing finishes will prevent the stain from coming in contact with the bare wood. The stain will sit on top of the wood surface and eventually become tacky. To fix the problem, you must remove the stain and sand down the piece.

Instructions

1. Dampen a clean cloth with mineral spirits. Wipe down the surface of the piece of wood to remove the stain that will not dry. When you have removed all the stain, wipe the wood down with a second clean cloth to remove any residue. Rinse both cloths. Allow the wood to dry overnight.

2. Use a sander to remove any existing laminates, veneers, or finishes. Depending on the piece you are working on, you can either use a belt sander or hand-sand with regular sand paper. The grit will also depend on the piece. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Once you have sanded away any shiny surface, stop sanding.

3. Wipe the piece with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Let the wood dry for one hour.

4. Paint on the stain with a small paint brush. Always apply stain with the wood grain. Apply the stain according to the package directions.

Repair A Button In Upholstery

Repair a button in upholstery to restore your furniture.

When your couch or chair pops a button, your furniture instantly takes on a worn and tattered appearance. Professional upholstery repair can be pricey and inconvenient if you have to remove the furniture from your home. You can fix a small issue like a popped button yourself for virtually no cost and restore your furniture to its former condition.

Instructions

1. Cut a 12-inch length of button twine with the scissors.

2. Thread the twine through the eye of the upholstery needle and pull the twine through so you have a double length of twine on the needle. Tie the ends of the upholstery thread in a double knot.

3. Insert the needle through the furniture at the point where you want to sew the button and push the needle back up to the top of the fabric again. The curved needle makes this easy to accomplish. Pull the needle through until the knot on the ends of the thread pops through the upholstery fabric and disappears to the other side of the fabric.

4. Insert the needle through the shank of the button and then back through the upholstery fabric at the same spot you inserted it before. Push the needle back up again to the right side of the fabric and pull the needle through to tighten the thread. Repeat this process four or five more times to sew the button securely back to the furniture.

5. Tie a double knot in the thread, insert the needle back into the upholstery fabric and then push the needle back up again. Pull the needle until the knot pops through the upholstery fabric and disappears on the other side of the fabric again (burying the knot).

6. Cut the button twine off even with the upholstery fabric with the scissors to finish sewing on the button.

Ideas For Curtain Rod Ends

Decorative finials, or curtain rod ends, can move your curtain rods from mere functional pieces of household hardware to decor that enhances your home. Curtain rods are generally made from either metal or wood, so the attachment method is different depending on which material your ends will enhance, but nearly any object that is lightweight and appropriately sized can become a decorative curtain rod end. Does this Spark an idea?

Geometrics

If your home decor is mostly modern, go with bold geometric shapes for your curtain rod finials. Many sources online and in retail stores offer squares, globes, triangles and spirals in a variety of finishes. Choose brushed metal cubes to complement modern metal and glass furniture and deep paint colors, or choose globes or spirals if your decor is more playful. Geometrics also go with some styles of classic decor. Globes work well with mid-20th century retro decor, while cubes, triangles and rectangles work well with spirals. If you cannot find the shapes you want, you can cut the shapes out of wood yourself and glue them to the ends of wooden rods. For metal shapes, try special-ordering or looking for other items that might be converted into finials, such as decorative salt and pepper shakers, which are often the appropriate size. For sturdy attachments, drill into both the finial and the end of wooden curtain rods, then coat a thin dowel with glue and use it as a post to attach the pieces. For metal rods, drill a wider hole, then insert a longer dowel into the hollow metal rod and insert the other end into the finial. Glue them in place with a two-part epoxy, if necessary.

Lively and Fun

For kids' rooms or bathrooms and kitchens, add a bit of fun to your finials by gluing toys to the ends of your curtain rods or binding them to the rod with decorative wire wraps. Rubber ducks are great for bathrooms and they come in a variety of colors and designs. For kitchens, use pieces from a child's tea set or go more grown-up with real porcelain demitasse cups. Just wrap them a few times with strong coated copper wire, then coat the rod with epoxy and wrap the wire ends around the last inch of the rod end. You may also be able to simply glue the cups on with two-part epoxy. If you're a pet lover, look for small wood figurines of your favorite animal and add these to your curtain rod ends. For a simpler whimsical look, purchase plain wood finials in any shape and paint them a solid color, then drizzle bright colors in random patterns over the dried basecoat.

Simple Fabric

Cut dowel pieces that will fit snugly inside your metal curtain rod ends or into holes drilled inside wooden rod ends, leaving approximately 2 inches sticking out beyond the curtain rod. Wrap the excess wood tightly with scraps of old clothing until you have a tight ball formed around the end. You can hold the scraps in place with rubber bands or simply tuck the ends into the wrapped portions. Cut 6 inch circles from upholstery or curtain fabric that matches your decor and wrap them around your fabric balls. Tie them in place with coordinating ribbons for a soft, romantic look that is simple to update if you change your decor.

Tips On Refinishing Antique Hardwood Spindles

Antique Spindles Add Detail and Character

Antique spindles add beautiful detail and character to furniture and homes. Worn spindles can detract from that beauty. Stripping, repairing and adding a new coat of stain or paint to antique spindles is a process that most homeowners can undertake successfully with a little planning. The needed materials and supplies can be purchased in most hardware and home stores.

Stripping Spindles

Spindle stripping is much easier if your spindles can be removed from the railing or furniture. Examine your piece to see if they can be removed without damage. If so, soak them in a liquid wood stripper in a glass or metal tray. If not, brush on a coat of gel type stain. Allow your spindles to soak in the stripper for the time recommended on the label before you attack the old finish.

Scrape the old finish or paint off using nylon bristle brushes and abrasive scrubbing pads. Thin paint scrapers or putty knives can also be used. Be careful not to gouge the wood in the process.

Once you have removed as much of the finish as possible, rinse the spindles in clear water, or wipe them down with a wet rag. If the paint or finish is particularly stubborn repeat the stripping process before proceeding to the next phase.

Sand your spindles with ultra fine sand paper or sanding sponges. Sanding by hand gets the details and prevents accidental damage from power sanders.

Repairing Chips and Cracks

Fill any cracks or chips in the spindles with a professional grade solvent-based wood filler. These products dry harder and take stain better than the water-based varieties.

Sand your spindles again. This time give special attention to areas that were repaired, sanding the filler as smooth as possible.

Staining Your Spindles

Allow the spindles to dry thoroughly before you brush on a coat of stain in your choice of colors. Use a soft bristle brush and try to get the stain as even as possible. Follow the label directions for the drying time and the procedure for wiping off excess stain.

Allow the stain to dry before sanding one last time to smooth any grain that may have raised in the staining process. Brush the dust away with a dry brush.

Apply at least two coats of clear polyurethane or other clear finish with a clean soft bristle brush. Avoid buildup to prevent runs and drips. If your spindles will be outside, check the label for a product that is recommended for outdoor use.

Painting Your Spindles

If you prefer paint, latex semigloss is a good way to go. Give the spindles a coat of aerosol spray primer to prep the surface. It goes on thinner than brush on primers to preserve the detail and avoid runs.

Apply at least two coats of paint. Some colors may require more for an even look. Be sure to allow the proper drying time between coats and use a good quality brush for best results.

Identifying Antique Furniture Styles

Recognizing a particular style of furniture is a craft, one learned through research and trial and error. Each style of antique furniture has its characteristics that lend themselves to identification. Bear in mind, though, that antique furniture styles are continually copied and updated. Just because that highboy in your mother’s attic was crafted in the William and Mary style does not mean it was made in the early 18th century. Recognizing a style is not the same as recognizing an antique.Identifying antique styles is a skill unto itself, and should be the first step you take in learning about antique furniture. Whether or not that highboy was made in the 18th century or the 20th, recognizing the style puts you that much closer to identifying its age.

Instructions

Identifying Antique Furniture Styles

1. To identify the William and Mary style of furniture, look for fat round balls. The William and Mary style will have ball feet, and the table apron decoration will include a fat round ball. This style is also prone to multiple legs on its highboy chests and tables. Spindles and legs are ornately turned and the tops of the chair backs are curved. The William and Mary style of furniture was produced from approximately 1688 through the early 1700s.

2. Know that the Queen Anne style of furniture is more delicate than the William and Mary. Look for cabriole legs with a padfoot or a ball and claw foot. A cabriole leg is wider at the top, and tapers inward toward the foot. Popular in England to around the middle of the 18th century, this style is less ornate than the William and Mary. Step back from the piece. Look for curves and carvings that are long and graceful, and minimal ornamentation.

3. Be aware that Thomas Chippendale is probably one of the most recognized names in furniture, even today. Chippendale was a cabinetmaker that published the book, “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director.” This pattern book became what could be called the carpenters’ bible. A Chippendale chair is likely to have the ball and claw foot, like the Queen Anne. Look at the shape of the legs of the chair. They may be curved or straight, but will not have the cabriole shape. The back of the chair will be lower than earlier styles. Measure from the top of the chair back to the floor. If it measures 3 feet 1 inch to 3 feet 2 1/2 inches, it may be a Chippendale style. Look for the stretcher, the length of wood that stretches across and connects the legs of chairs. A Chippendale chair will not have a stretcher. The piecrust table is one of the easiest pieces to recognize of the Chippendale style. The top is round and the edge scalloped, just like a pie.

4. know that the late 18th century of Chippendale style blends into Hepplewhite; the designs are seen into the early 19th century. To distinguish a Hepplewhite style chair from a Chippendale, look at the legs and back. The legs will be straight, tapering down to the feet. The back is a shield style, that is, the back includes a solid piece between the rails instead of slats.

5. Consider that the Federal style furniture technically refers to a multitude of styles, including the Chippendale and Hepplewhite. But for most people, federal style refers to the Greek and Roman revival styles, primarily seen in architecture in the early 19th century. To identify Federal style furniture, look for chairs with curved backs and thin curved legs. Table legs resemble columns and much of the hardware on cabinetry is gold.

6. Know that Victorian style furniture is perhaps one of the more easily recognized styles. It was essentially the first style to be produced in the Industrial age. With access to such tools as the jigsaw, craftsmen delighted in creating the ornate. Look for intricate ornamentation. Every bit of wood is curved, carved, scrolled or bowed. Look at the “puff” of an upholstered piece. The piece will appear overstuffed. It will be tightly tufted, and ornately trimmed in jewel-toned braiding. Gold was a favored color for trim.

7. Be aware that little of the furniture made after the Victorian era is considered to be truly antique. This is not to say antique furniture styles end with the Victorian. Subsequent styles developed into the early 20th century are becoming today’s antique styles.

When During Pregnancy Should You Buy Baby Furniture

There is no magical time that fits every family's needs regarding when to purchase the nursery furniture. However, there are general questions to ponder and guidelines to follow. You also need to consider the furniture you desire; some models will take longer to arrive. Overall, you want to wait until the risk of miscarriage drops and still leave a cushion of time before baby's arrival.

Needed Furniture

Early in pregnancy, you may enjoy deciding what furniture you ideally want to have. Heidi Murkhoff, parenting expert and author of What to Expect the First Year, recommends several key pieces of nursery furniture. Foremost is a safe crib. Antique cribs are not recommended as they rarely meet safety requirements. The crib also needs a safe mattress and bedding. Decide if the baby will only use the crib, or if a bassinet, cradle or bedside sleeper will also be used. A safe changing space is another key feature of a nursery. Many people use an ordinary dresser, or you can purchase a stand-alone changing table or a combination changing table and dresser. Also, consider buying a rocking chair or glider. Finally, decide if there is any other furniture you will need, like an armoire, to provide ample storage.

Once you have decided your baby furniture needs, decide if you want a matching set, or if you will mix and match. Where would you like to purchase the furniture from? Will you be able to pick it up immediately, or is there going to be a long shipping time? Are you the one who will be purchasing the furniture, or are there family and friends who wish to buy the baby furniture as a gift? Answers to these early questions will help you decide when to purchase the furniture.

General Recommendations

Mothers usually decide to wait until after the first trimester to begin buying baby furniture. According to the Mayo Clinic, the risk for miscarriage greatly decreases after 12 weeks. Eighty percent of miscarriages occur during the first trimester. The second trimester is often known as the "golden period" of pregnancy. The fatigue and nausea from the first trimester have faded, and the discomforts of the third trimester haven't arrived. Therefore, according to The Bump pregnancy forums, the second trimester is often an ideal time purchase the baby furniture and then set up the nursery. This also helps ensure that everything is ready in case baby has an early arrival.

Play Sims 2 On Nintendo Ds

The "Sims 2" game was originally created for the PC, but a port was created for the hand-held Nintendo DS gaming system. This version of the game differs a lot from the original, features new modes and takes some time to get used to. Understanding basic controls and game play elements will make "Sims 2" a lot easier to enjoy and experience.

Instructions

Game Play

1. Use the DS buttons to control your Sim and the surrounding area. Change the running and walking function with "B." Move the character with the D-pad. Zoom the camera in with "Y" and out with "X." Interact with objects and people using the "A" button.

2. Operate the DS touchscreen to perform tasks. Use it to interact with objects, play games, check goals, access the inventory, check relationship status or use the cellphone to contact other Sims.

3. Keep your sanity meter up during the game. The "sanity" is the life source of your Sim. Each Sim has needs and you need to follow the on-screen icons to keep the sanity meter up. The easiest way to do this is by interacting with other people, eating properly and participating in activities.

4. Maintain the hotel. Your Sim runs a hotel and the main objective is to keep it clean. Access the inventory and use the vacuum to clean up the main lobby and hallways of the hotel. Try to do this once a day to keep the hotel guests happy.

5. Gather nuclear fuel rods around the town. You can either sell extra fuel rods for 40 Simoleans or keep them to give power to the hotel. Check the hotel power meters once a day to keep the hotel running.

6. Visit the "Sax and Lion Lounge" to play the keyboard. Use the touchscreen to play the various keys and create a composition. Tap on the microphone icon to record a four second sample of yourself singing.

Mini-Games

7. Play one of the four mini-games. These games occur during everyday Sim life and are integrated within the normal game play.

8. Use the metal detector to go over dirt areas and try to uncover alien ship parts. The screen will flash when a part is found, and your Sim will quickly dig up the part. Bring the parts to the town "Store" and look for Johnny Smith. He will purchase each part for 150 Simoleans.

9. Collect all 24 license plates. Different locations include the sushi bar, rat cave, gym, casino and the jungle room. Return the license plates to the jail, and after you collect all 24 you earn an award.

10. Battle aliens with your water gun. The water gun is automatically in your inventory and can be accessed at any time. When you find an alien, shoot it with the water gun to destroy it.

11. Perform alien surgery. Trace over the surgery cut lines on the touch screen of the DS. Once the alien is cut open, access the tweezers from the side panel and remove any parts inside. Beat the timer and win the game along with Simoleans.

The History Of Resident Evil

"Resident Evil" (known as "Biohazard" in Japan) is a survival horror video game franchise released by Capcom for a variety of systems. The popular series, typically featuring zombies as the primary threat, has spawned a number of movies and spin-offs.

Origins

"Resident Evil" was the brainchild of video game designer Shinji Mikami, who sought to create a horror game that took influence from films like "Night of the Living Dead" and "Alien" along with video games like "Alone in the Dark" and "Sweet Home." Mikami's game took place in a zombie-infested mansion on the outskirts of a fictional American town called Raccoon City.

"Resident Evil" debuted on the Sony Playstation in early 1996 to critical praise and commercial success. The series would go on to become one of Capcom's most popular franchises.

Early Sequels

With "Resident Evil 2," the game took a more action-oriented approach and featured new characters and setting. It was released in 1998 and surpassed the success of its predecessor.

"Resident Evil 3: Nemesis" was a side-story game that followed events leading up to "Resident Evil 2." While not quite as successful, it still sold very well. "Resident Evil Code: Veronica," considered the direct sequel to "Resident Evil 2," debuted on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000. It was the most ambitious installment yet, using real-time 3D environments instead of the pre-rendered backgrounds of previous games.

Recent Installments

Rather than work on another sequel, Capcom elected to remake the original "Resident Evil" for the Nintendo GameCube with photo-realistic graphics and other innovations. The 2002 release was a success and was followed by a prequel, "Resident Evil Zero," which did not earn as much popularity or acclaim.

The production of "Resident Evil 4" went through two restarts because Shinji Mikami was displeased with the project's supernatural direction. The resulting game abandoned the traditional zombie enemies in favor of parasites. Its 2009 sequel, "Resident Evil 5," was released on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and introduced cooperative play for the first time in the main series.

Characteristics

The "Resident Evil" games are known for their tense atmospheres and focus on survival rather than action. Players are forced to conserve health, ammunition and other items, as well as solve puzzles, in order to win. With "Resident Evil 4," the game took a more action-oriented turn, losing much of the survival horror that defined earlier installments.

Spin-Offs

The first true spin-off was the failed "Resident Evil: Survivor," a first-person shooter. Capcom attempted two sequels, improving on the premise with "Resident Evil: Survivor 2" and "Resident Evil: Dead Aim." The company even attempted resurrecting the shooting game again with the "Umbrella Chronicles" series.

Other spin-offs include the failed "Resident Evil Outbreak," which allowed players to cooperate online, and its equally unsuccessful sequel, "Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2."

Ideas To Decorate A Rocking Chair

Decorate the wide slats on the back of a rocking chair, the arm rests and the seat.

Rocking chairs beckon you to sit and sway comfortably back and forth, whether they are on the front porch or inside your home. Decorate a rocking chair with colorful backgrounds, whimsical designs and customized imagery to accent any living space. The easiest way to paint a rocking chair is with spray paint, but you can also use small rollers and small paint brushes. Does this Spark an idea?

Painted Flowering Vines

Decorate a rocking chair with painted flowering vines that follow the natural lines of the chair's design. Paint the chair a background color to complement the green of the vines and the bright colors of the flowers. A bright white, soft yellow, pale blue or light pink are all appropriate background colors to showcase flowering vines. Acrylic paints work over latex or spray paint for the decorative aspects of the rocking chair. Tape stencils or templates onto the chair to help create the garden-style art.

Vinyl Rub-On Designs

If hand painting designs onto a rocking chair seems like too much trouble, create a similar effect using vinyl rub-on designs. These embellishments are like permanent stickers, with artistic designs that include flowers, birds, insects, letters and geometric shapes. Paint the rocking chair in a solid background color, and then transfer the rub-on designs. The images are transferred to the painted background surface of the chair using a stylus. You can protect the images and the paint on the rocking chair with a coat or two of polyurethane.

Chalkboard Rocking Chair

Decorate a rocking chair for a child's room or a family room with colorful chalkboard paint. Paint the entire rocking chair with the chalkboard paint to create an acceptable background for your kid's creativity. Chalkboard paint goes on as easily as regular latex paint. Select a color that coordinates with your room's d cor. Now your children can draw on the chair with chalk, which can then be easily erased.

Nursery Rocking Chair

Customize a rocking chair to fit in with a baby's nursery through paint colors, images, and lettering. Paint the rocking chair to coordinate with the nursery d cor, and then decorate it with an inspirational verse, painted designs, or rub-on transfers. Stenciled lettering and transfer designs are available to help create wording. Transfers and stencils are also available in a variety of baby-friendly patterns to suit a baby's nursery.

Decoupage Rocking Chair

Cover parts of the rocking chair frame with old family photos to create a commemorative work of art. Stain the wooden chair to coordinate with your d cor. Decoupage the photos onto the wide slats on the rocking chair, back and front. Spread a thin layer of decoupage medium onto the stained wood surface. Press images cut from the photos into the glue and then use a paint sponge to spread the decoupage medium over the images. If the arm rails are wide enough, you can also decorate them with old photos.

Woodworking Plans

The right woodworking plans are crucial to the success of your projects. Whether you're crafting small toys or building a large shed, you want a plan that is easy to follow and suits your needs. Examine the detail of the plan, dimensions, supplies and clarity to find the best woodworking plans.

Details

Look at the details of the woodworking plans. Check the supplies, types of tools and skill level needed to do the project. You should have a basic idea of what you want to do with your project and your skill level. A plan that is too difficult for you will be useless. One that is too simplistic will not give enough information to take the project to your level and skills. Checking the details of the woodworking plans enables you to find one that will use all of your skills to give you the best results for your project.

Dimensions

Look at the dimensions of the woodworking plans. You can find many plans for building a wood shed or designing a wood clock. The size of the finished product is important. Select a plan that has dimensions that will fit into the area where you will put the completed project. For example, if you're building a wood shed you want plans for one that will fit the area where you plan on erecting the building.

Supplies

Examine the list of supplies on the plans. Some projects are not feasible if you don't have all of the woodworking tools and supplies needed to follow them. You can select a plan that has your specific tools or choose a different project. Often, it's not realistic to attempt a plan if you don't have access to the right supplies to complete it.

Clarity

Examine how clear the directions are for the woodworking plans. Some plans don't have any directions at all. They're for the advanced woodworker who only needs the schematics and dimensions of a project. Make certain the woodworking plans have enough clarity in the instructions for you to actually be able to complete the project.

Make A Travel Trailer Gaucho Bed

A retractable gaucho bed frees up a lot of living space.

A travel trailer gaucho bed is a sleeping platform with a very large drawer that pulls outward from beneath a sofa seat. The drawer is prevented from over-extending by stops and folding legs are extended to support the front of the drawer, then the sofa seat cushion is moved into the drawer and the sofa back rest is lowered to occupy the space vacated by the seat cushion. With considerable planning, both seating and sleeping configurations can be sized to fit any travel trailer.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with the different methods used to extend and retract a travel trailer gaucho bed by visiting recreational vehicle dealerships and trade shows. Try out a number of size options to determine what the dimensions of your gaucho bed must be.

2. Use graph paper and a pen to plan out the stationary frame and extending drawer of the gaucho. Decide between two-by-two-inch lumber and metal tubing joined by pipe fittings or welds. Decide whether to make the bases of the drawer section and the sofa seat from plywood panels, from tow straps woven into a taut lattice or from a grid of wooden battens. Then decide whether to fabricate the drawer tracks from simple wooden slides or from purpose-built steel runners.

3. Determine whether to have bespoke cushions cut to size from large sheets of high-density foam from a fabric store, or whether to use cushions from a cannibalized household sofa bed from a goodwill store.

4. Make the travel trailer gaucho bed by following your plans and consulting the experts at home improvement warehouses to learn the best fittings to use for latching the drawer section so it does not over-extend. Fix timber joins together using countersunk screws reinforced with proprietary wood glue. Attach the cushions to their supports using glue or hook-and-eye tape.

Treasure Island Las Vegas

Treasure Island is a casino and hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. It has a pirate theme. The decor, uniforms and entertainment reflect this theme, although the image has been toned down in recent years. It is located in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip, surrounded by other casino/hotels. Treasure Island is often referred to by its initials, "TI." The casino's logo and many of its signs identify it as "TI."

Identification

Treasure Island Las Vegas is located at 3300 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las Vegas, NV 89109. It is on the corner of Spring Mountain Road on the Las Vegas Strip. TI is bordered by the Fashion Show Shopping Mall to the north and the Mirage Hotel and Casino to the south. The Palazzo at the Venetian/Sands Expo and the Wynn Hotel and Casino are across the street on the other side of Las Vegas Boulevard. Pedestrian bridges connect Treasure Island to the Venetian and Fashion Show Shopping Mall. A tram connects it to the Mirage.

Size

The Treasure Island Las Vegas contains 2,885 rooms. 220 of them are suites. It is considered a Triple A Four Diamond hotel. It has all the amenities your would expect from that rating. TI has a world-class casino, several swimming pools, a spa, restaurants, bars, a nightclub and top-level entertainment.

History

Treasure Island opened in 1993. It is owned by MGM Mirage and is a sister property of the Mirage Hotel and Casino next door. TI cost about $450 million to build. When it opened its doors, Treasure Island aggressively marketed itself to families with children. In 2003, TI renovated the hotel casino to have a greater appeal to adults. The children's pool and arcade were replaced by a hot tub and nightclub.

Effects

Treasure Island may be best known for its elaborate pirate show in the artificial bay in front of the property. On most nights, people line Las Vegas Boulevard to see one of four free shows. The original production in Buccaneer Bay was geared toward children with British sailors taking on a pirate ship. The production featured explosions, falls into the water and a sinking ship that rose again when the show was over. Although immensely popular, Treasure Island replaced it in 2003. Buccaneer Bay was renamed Sirens' Cove and the new production was called "Sirens of TI." This production is much more adult oriented. It features a band of sexy sirens taking on surly pirates. The women win the battle, sink the pirate ship and turn it all into a big party.

Features

Treasure Island is the home of Mystere. It is the original Cirque du Soleil production in Las Vegas and has run non-stop in Treasure Island since the casino opened in 1993. TI also features other top-notch entertainment and shows that rotate through at different times of year. The casino has appeared in several movies and television shows including Knocked Up, Miss Congeniality 2 and the Las Vegas television series.

Wooden Brackets For Curtains

Wooden Brackets for Curtains

Wooden brackets can be used to attach curtains covering windows and doors. The bracket itself is attached to the window frame or surrounding wall, and supports the curtain rod. Bracket types differ in construction, finishes and interior styles. Wooden brackets can be ornately carved, stained in various natural wood shades, or custom-painted. Wooden brackets can be used over and over again by repainting them. Wooden brackets also bring texture to window treatments. Does this Spark an idea?

One-Rod Bracket

One-rod brackets are used to hold one rod at a time. The bracket has a space for the curtain rod carved out at the top. This style of bracket can provide support for a thick or heavy curtain rod. Curtains that are made from heavyweight material will have plenty of support from this type of bracket.

Two-Rod Bracket

Two rod brackets can hold two window curtain rods at a time. The bracket has two spaces carved at the bracket top. Two-rod brackets are used with window treatments that consist of both curtains and valences hung together. The layering of materials creates a full and stylish appearance.

European Brackets

European brackets look like hooks. The hook protrudes from the wall and the rod is placed in the hook space. European brackets allow for window fabrics to be draped over the hook shapes. Curtains made of sheer or lightweight material will flow from the bracket, creating a sweeping effect.

Inside-Mount Socket Bracket

Inside-mount socket brackets form a cup-like structure which holds the curtain rod from inside the window. The brackets allow for the rod to be placed inside or over the cup-like space of the socket. The advantage of an inside bracket is that the bracket placement does not mar the surrounding wall.

Swivel Bracket

Swivel brackets hold one curtain rod at a time. The bracket is usually sphere-shaped and can swivel to allow for the rod to be placed through the bracket. Swivel brackets used in tight spaces allow for easy access. Both large and small windows with little wall space for attaching brackets can best benefit from a swivel bracket.

Southwestern Style Kitchen Decor

Liven up a plain kitchen by adding Southwestern decor.

Southwestern decor became trendy in the 1980s. Initially, many attempts at Southwestern style decorating were over the top and gaudy. To achieve a Southwestern feel without going overboard, choose accent pieces deliberately and carefully. Aim to create a Southwestern ambiance with subtle decor. Does this Spark an idea?

Features

Yellow ochre is a typical color used when creating a Southwestern theme.

Southwestern decor should feature stone elements such as stone or tile flooring and countertops. Pick accessories such as hand towels, valances, and serving platters that feature bright colors and geometric patterns. Choose primary colors such as carmine red, indigo blue, and yellow ochre. Accent with colors such as orange, green and purple. Another less bold color scheme includes colors such as pink, beige and yellow.

Types

Display pieces of heavy stoneware on your countertops.

You can find all sorts of Southwestern decor items. Choose from pottery, trivets, stoneware, and wall art featuring Southwestern themes. When selecting hand towels, choose rough textures and bold colors. Stay away from heavily patterned and coordinated towels and accessories that match exactly.

Considerations

Choose a favorite painting to tie together other design elements.

If your kitchen does not have stone elements, consider using Southwestern rugs to accents floors, or adding rustic doorknobs to cabinets for a Southwestern flair. Choose one main accent piece such as a painting or vase to tie together all other colors and elements featured in your kitchen.

Simulate A Mission Finish On Furniture

You'll need to sand furniture repeatedly between coats when applying this finish.

According to Jeff Jewitt of the website Wood Central, a mission finish refers to a process where craftsmen expose the wood furniture to very powerful ammonia fumes in an airtight room. This type of finish shaded softer woods and created a more uniform tone throughout the wood. Luckily you don't need to use ammonia fumes to recreate this style of finish. A more modern method allows you to create this type of coloring and even tone while highlighting the grain of the wood. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Rub 150 grit sandpaper across the surface area of the wood furniture. Fill a spray bottle with distilled water and spray the furniture evenly to help raise the grain. Rub 180 grit sandpaper all over the surface of the wood.

2. Blast the exterior of the furniture with a can of compressed air. Apply a light or dark mission style stain to the furniture with a 3 inch nylon brush to give the furniture a distinctive undertone. Let the stain soak into the wood and then wipe up the excess pigment with a very soft cloth. Allow it to dry for eight hours. Sand it with 320 grit sandpaper. Wash off your nylon brush.

3. Apply a coat of 2-lb. cut colored shellac with your nylon brush. Select any color of shellac you want. Allow the shellac to dry completely and then sand it with 320 grit paper. Then apply a second coat, letting it dry completely. Run a vacuum across the surface of the furniture to suck up any dust.

4. Mix 1 cup of brown glaze with 1/2 cup black glaze in a small pan. Apply it lightly to the furniture, going in the direction of the grain. Blot up the excess glaze with a cloth. Allow the glaze to dry for at least 12 hours.

5. Spray a finishing coat of uncolored shellac over the glaze. Allow it to dry for a full 24 hours. Dip a wad of 0000 steel wool into a paste wax and coat the furniture with a light layer of wax. Buff it to a shine.

Stain Quarter Sawn White Oak Flooring

Quarter-sawn oak boards reveal exceptional wood grain detailsgrain details known as "medullary rays."

Quarter sawn wood, when it is milled, is essentially cut into a pie shape into predetermined sizes based on the diameter of the tree trunk. When milling white oak tree trunks using this process, grain details that otherwise go unnoticed are revealed. These grain details are called "medullary rays" and look like zebra stripes that run the length of the quarter sawn board. Staining quarter sawn white oak flooring brings these grain details out in a way that a few coats of polyurethane cannot. Stain your quarter sawn white oak flooring any color you like to make the medullary rays stand out. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Sand the quarter sawn white oak flooring with 200-grit sandpaper to remove splinters and to smooth out the wood surface. Remove all of the saw dust with a vacuum and tack cloths.

2. Stir pre-stain wood conditioner thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. Apply pre-stain wood conditioner to the wood flooring with a foam brush. Apply the conditioner to small areas (2x2-foot areas) at a time. Allow the conditioner to sit on the surface of the wood for up to five minutes, and remove the excess conditioner with a cloth rag. Apply conditioner in this way over the whole surface of the floor. Pre-stain wood conditioner opens the pores of the wood so the wood will accept the stain evenly. The conditioner should be dry before applying wood stain to the quarter sawn white oak flooring.

3. Stir the can of stain thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. Apply wood stain to the conditioned wood flooring surface with foam brushes working with small areas at a time. Allow the stain to sit on the wood for a few minutes, and remove excess stain with a cloth rag. Overlap adjoining sections of unstained wood when stain is applied to them. Allow the wood stain to dry for the recommended length of time according to the product label.

4. Sand the stained wood surface lightly. Remove the sanding dust from the wood. Stir a can of hardwood flooring-grade polyurethane thoroughly with a wooden stir stick. Use a floor polyurethane applicator to spread polyurethane over the surface of the stained wood flooring. Allow the first coat of polyurethane to completely dry. Lightly sand the polyurethane coat with a 220-grit sanding pad. Remove the sanding dust from the flooring surface. Repeat the application process for at least two more coats of polyurethane, sanding between coats. Allow the last coat of polyurethane to dry thoroughly.

5. Lightly sand the last coat of polyurethane when it has completely dried. Wipe the sanded surface so it is free of sanding dust. Clean tools as needed by rinsing them with mineral spirits or turpentine.

Restore Art Deco Furniture

Art Deco light fixture

Unlike other antiques, the style of Art Deco must be kept in pristine condition in order to retain its original beauty and intention. The materials associated with the style tend to be chrome, glass and highly polished woods that require care and maintenance to keep them in good condition. However, you can restore such pieces and bring them back to life. The material of the piece determines the steps that you should take toward restoration. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Replace glass used for table tops and cabinet doors easily by having glass cut to your specifications and closely observing how the original piece was held in place.

2. Restore leather furniture by first removing the stain using a gentle facial scrub, but be careful not to let leather to get too wet. Then apply a leather conditioner to the leather to restore appearance and remove scuffs.

3. Clean chrome or aluminum with gentle dish soap or polish scratches with polish from a hardware or auto repair shop.

4. Refurbish wood veneer components by placing a sheet of brown paper over the wood and ironing the surface to melt the original glue and smooth out imperfections that have accumulated over time.

Remodel In The Bungalow Style

Bungalow style homes are known for their simplicity of style.

Craftsman, Mission Style, Prairie Style and Bungalow Style are all terms that define similar architectural and decorating motifs that have their roots in the Arts and Crafts movement. As the highly embellished Victoria Era faded out and the desire for mass-produced furnishings declined, a return to simpler and more functional design became popular. Depending on your geographical location, a derivative of the Arts and Crafts style was given a name and description. Frank Lloyd Wright popularized the Prairie Style in the mid-western states, Mission style developed in the west and bungalow style homes were being built throughout America. Clean lines, built-in furnishings, exposed beams and the use of natural materials symbolized the bungalow style of homes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select colors that coincide with nature for your home's color palette. Choose three dominant colors and two passive tones to keep the eye moving throughout the rooms. Watch the sunrise and sunset in your area and note the colors projected. Mute those colors for a more subtle theme. Look at muted greens, browns and grays, with tonal hints of soft blue and purple.

2. Shop for handcrafted furniture that is simple in design and structure. Buy handcrafted oak furniture that is plain and functional, upright and build solidly, like Gustav Stickley designs. Find chairs with rush or leather seats. Look for bungalow style trademarks of leather straps and copper insets.

3. Buy William Morris designs and copies for your walls and upholstery fabrics. Look for the simple designs without ornamentation, like flowers and leaves in bronze or pewter. Hang unembellished curtains from plain brass or wood poles.

4. Put wood, wide-plank flooring in all main living areas and place simple cotton or wool handmade rugs on top. Use linoleum in the kitchen and put a handmade, hook rug under the kitchen table.

5. Install simple wood-paneled cabinetry in the kitchen. Hide the appliances by using integrated machines so only the cabinet fronts are evident. Use porcelain for the sink and find reproduction lights and pendants to hang from the ceiling. Put wainscoting below the chair-railing height and place a wooden table in the kitchen for family gatherings, bungalow style. Use tiles in cobalt blue, green, turquoise or red for accents.

6. Build in a dining room side table or storage hutch for display and to store useful dining accessories. Use colored or stained glass for some of the panels. Put a built-in bookcase under the stairwell for an efficient use of space and a decorative look and build bookcases on either side of the fireplace.

7. Purchase copper and pewter lighting fixtures, especially with a hammered finish. Find stained glass or Tiffany-inspired multicolored chandeliers and table lamps. Install wall sconces for indirect lighting.

8. Hang a wooden swing by ropes on the bungalow's front porch. Shop in second hand stores and thrift shops for old wooden furniture to decorate the porch. Put a sisal rug on the floor of the porch. Hang flowering baskets on the eaves and put a few flower pots on stands throughout the porch.

Techniques For Using Joint Compounds On Walls

You can spray or roll joint compound as a texture, but you need a blade to finish seams.

Joint compound, called "mud" in the industry, is a plaster-like gypsum product that builders use for finishing and texturing drywall. It comes in different weights. The heavier ones are suitable for taping seams while the lighter ones are more appropriate for top-coating and texturing. In addition, a setting-type, called hot mud, is available for applications that require extra strength and resistance to cracking. Mudding techniques vary with the mud type and according to whether you're taping or texturing. Does this Spark an idea?

Taping Seams

Whether you use taping compound or all-purpose joint compound, the technique for taping seams is the same. With a 4- or 6-inch blade, you spread the mud generously along the seam in a strip slightly wider than the drywall tape, then lay the tape on top and scrape over it with the blade to remove the excess. If the tape bubbles up, it usually means there's not enough mud. Some builders prefer to let the tape dry before top-coating, but others recommend spreading another coat immediately to shorten the time needed for finishing. It's largely a matter of preference.

Finishing

The care and skill you apply to top-coating the seams and covering screw holes determines the final appearance of the wall. You should apply at least two top coats, using either all-purpose joint compound or topping compound, and apply each coat with a progressively wider blade so the edges gradually feather into the wall. Professionals often use a 10- to 12-inch blade for the final coat. Apply the mud generously and scrape it in long, straight strokes. Let each coat dry before you apply the next, and keep the wall free of dirt and dried mud so you won't create tracks when you scrape.

Texturing

Many texturing patterns can be made with joint compound. You can thin it down and spray it to make a mottled or eggshell pattern, or you can apply the thinned mud with a roller for a similar effect. You can also spread topping compound at full strength with a blade and make swirl patterns or knife edges. One of the most common patterns is called "knock-down." To do it, apply blotches of mud to the wall by spraying or with a blade, then use the blade to scrape the tops flat to create the texture.

Using Hot Mud

Because it sets quickly, hot mud is more difficult to use than regular joint compound, but its superior strength is desirable on joints that are prone to cracking and damage. After you mix hot mud, you have a limited time to apply it before it becomes unworkable, so you should mix only what you need and work quickly. Apply it like the non-setting variety, but scrape carefully to ensure there are no ridges or high areas. While regular joint compound is easy to sand, hot mud isn't, and any mistakes you make while using it will be difficult to correct.

Mexican Wedding Etiquette

The exchange of gold coins is part of traditional Mexican wedding etiquette.

If you will be attending the wedding of a Mexican bride and groom soon, it's important to be aware of the etiquette associated with the occasion. Following these courtesies will help to ensure that you, other guests and the bride and groom have a wonderful time at this sentimental celebration.

Arras

In a traditional Mexican wedding ceremony, proper etiquette calls for the groom to pass a collection of 13 coins to his bride, called arras. These coins represent the groom's acknowledgment of his responsibility to support his bride. During the ceremony, the priest blesses the coins and passes them between the newlyweds. Ultimately, the coins end up in the bride's hands.

Madrinas y Padrinos

In Mexico, it is appropriate for godparents, or madrinas (female) and padrinos (male), to be responsible for sponsoring the wedding. Not only does the couple lend their financial support to the wedding, but they also serve as spiritual guides and advisers for the newlyweds. Traditionally, the bride and groom choose individuals who are close to the couple, such as lifelong family friends, or an aunt and uncle, for this position.

Ate el Nudo

Ate el Nudo, or "tying the knot" is a custom in Mexican weddings that is centuries old. This part of the ceremony takes place near the end of the wedding, and a white rosary binds the bride and groom together to signify their new union. They tie the rosary around their shoulders in the shape of a figure eight; it is also customary for the couple to recite a pledge of their love and fidelity to one another while bound by the rosary.

Gathering of Guests

At a Mexican wedding reception, guests often gather around the newlyweds and form the shape of a heart. This symbolizes the love and support that the couple will receive from their family members during their marriage. The bride and groom stand in the middle of the "heart" and dance their first dance as a married couple.

Mexican Wedding Food

Be prepared to eat a number of savory foods, such as beef or chicken, prepared with spicy yellow rice as a side dish at a Mexican wedding. Mexican wedding cakes often include pieces of fruit soaked in rum for additional flavor. If a white cake, or tres leches cake, is the couple's choice, it is proper etiquette to offer guests cafe con leche, or coffee with milk. It is also appropriate to serve sangria, which is a wine drink with seltzer water and fruit. The couple can also serve flavored sodas at a Mexican ceremony for those who do not want alcoholic beverages.

Live Like The Na'Vi From "Avatar"

Avatar

For some moviegoers, Pandora, the world James Cameron created in his latest blockbuster, "Avatar" is more than just a fantastical cinematic experience. For these people, Pandora is an idyllic place they actually wish to inhabit. Of course there is one small problem with this wish...Pandora only exists on screen.

Yet while it's not physically possible to inhabit Pandora, with these easy steps, it can be possible to create Pandora right here on Planet Earth.

Instructions

1. 1) In the movie, the Na'vi have a deep spiritual connection to the physical world around them. To them, every plant and tree has a life and resonance all its own. To replicate that feeling for yourself, start with something as small and simple as adopting a tree. Or for the more green thumbed among you, grow your own garden and savor the feel and smells of the earth in your hands.

2. 2) Just as they savored their plant life, the Na'vi also cherished their fellow man. So in this instance, be kind to all those around you. While we may all look and act differently, just as Cpl. Jake Scully learned, we are all spiritually connected with each other.

3. 3) Learn a new language. As part of his immersion into the Na'vi society, Cpl. Scully has to learn their language. As part of this process he also learned more about their culture and traditions. To that end, "ftxey nume lisi. Si aynga rrtok." (That's Nav'i-an for "learn a new language, it will make you smile.")

4. 4) Help to save our planet. In the movie, a major corporation is interested in mining a rare mineral from Pandora that is key to solving the Earth's energy crisis. Here on Earth 2010, we have the power to curtail the energy crisis right in our own backyards. Things as small and easy as recycling, driving hybrid cars, and using energy saving light bulbs are just some examples of do our part to help make our corner of the Earth more Pandora-like.

5. 5) Be kind to animals. Anyone who has seen "Avatar" knows that Pandora is inhabited by some pretty fierce creatures. But as Cpl. Scully soon comes to learn, these animals aren't all that fierce...they just need a little understanding. So here on Planet Earth, adopt don't buy a pet, donate to animal causes and remember that animals have souls and feelings like just us.

Where Sell Used Office Furniture

Used Office Furniture

Used office furniture can be sold in a short period of time with the right tools. Traditionally, office furniture classified ads have been placed in local newspapers. You could also contact a business that will purchase the furniture directly from you and resell the items. Lastly, office furniture ads can be placed online through websites such as craigslist.org.

Newspaper Ads

Local papers sell classified ad space at different prices. For example, the Los Angeles Times sells print and online space at different rates, though you can access additional information online. The website even allows users to place their ad online--whether print, online or both. The Miami Herald has representatives that will design ads (1-866-860-6000), or you can create your own ad using their self-serve website. Most local newspapers across the nation offer similar services. However, the turnaround time from when you place an ad to when the used furniture sells may be longer than if you had used other ways.

Businesses

Businesses exist that directly purchase used office furniture and later sell the items independently. Services, such as Furniture Finders, list various dealers located throughout the United States that will purchase used furniture. SWC Office Furniture is an example of a business that buys used furniture in the Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts area. You can also contact furniture liquidators that will purchase furniture or arrange to advertise and sell the furniture, usually by charging a fee and a percentage of the profits. Officefurnitureliquidators.com works within the Maryland and Delaware area; conklinoffice.com is in the New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts area; and abettersource.com is in the San Francisco Bay area.

Craigslist

An easy way to sell office furniture is to take photos of the inventory and upload the photos onto a craigslist ad. Unlike similar websites such as ebay, purchases on craigslist are primarily made by local residents. While shipping costs should not be a factor, make sure that the ad specifies if the buyer is responsible for delivery or if you are willing to deliver the furniture. Consider whether you want to answer every prospective buyer's questions or if you want to hold an open house or garage sale, perhaps during the weekend, so that many buyers can inspect the furniture simultaneously. To avoid answering several telephone calls about the furniture, do not provide a contact number. Highlight that all sales are final in the ad as well as on any receipt, if applicable.

What Is A Conceptual Framework For An Educational Thesis

Writing a strong thesis statement can be easier after creating a conceptual framework.

An educational thesis paper will answer a research question asked by the writer in the paper. A thesis is a statement discussing what the paper will be about. This statement should be strong and succinct, providing the reader with a clear picture. Writing a thesis paper can be made easier by creating a conceptual framework. Conceptual frameworks are visual diagrams about what will be discussed in an educational thesis paper.

Definition

A conceptual framework is a graphic diagram of a research topic or thesis. The conceptual framework is basically a visual representation of the research topic. The conceptual framework discusses the thesis or hypothesis stated in the paper, expands on literature pertinent to the topic and offers a synopsis of the research paper's main points. A conceptual framework assists to structure a research paper and expand, clarify and discuss the subject fully.

Thesis Statements

A thesis statement is one or two sentences in a paper that contains the focus of the paper and discusses what the paper will be about. All academic and research papers must contain a thesis statement. The thesis statement will often expound upon a research question that will be answered in the paper.

Develop a Conceptual Framework

To create a conceptual framework the writer must develop research questions, examine the key variables in regards to those research questions, create a graphic diagram of the question examined, graphically describe the key elements involved, depict current research associated with questions and show relationships between all variables.

Conceptual Framework and Educational Thesis Paper

It is important to focus on one topic or one question that will be addressed. For example, if a student's research interests lie in special education they may choose a thesis related to special education. A strong thesis statement regarding special education is important because all research conducted will be related to that statement. After the statement is formulated a conceptual framework will assist the writer in visually representing elements needed in the paper, along with clarifying subject matter to be addressed.

Benefits of Conceptual Framework

Creating a conceptual framework can assist the thesis writer in creating an outline and agenda for the dissertation. A conceptual framework assists the thesis writer in forming her hypothetical question, finding research relevant to the question, answering the questions and forming a conclusion about the hypothesis based on the research presented.

Wood Restoration Tips

Restore old wood to its original beauty.

Wood furniture can be a lovely addition to your home but can pose problems when it is not taken care of properly or when age causes the wood to disintegrate. Small blemishes on your wood should be taken care of soon after the problem surfaces; wood can be restored easily at this stage, using a few products. Does this Spark an idea?

White Spots or Blushing

White spots are caused by spills and condensation from drinking glasses. Blushing is a white haze that covers a piece of wood furniture that has a shellac or lacquer finish. You can usually remove both of these problems by polishing the furniture with liquid polish, then buffing the surface. If that doesn't work, you can try a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Or, try a gentle abrasive of cigarette ashes with a couple of drops of vegetable oil. Another method is a thin paste of linseed oil and rottenstone gently rubbed over the spot. You can also try buffing the surface with No. 0000 steel wool and linseed oil. Apply two coats of furniture wax and shine with a clean rag once the stains are removed.

Wax and Gum

Wrap a piece of ice in a towel and apply it to wax or gum that is on your furniture. The wax or gum will become hard and brittle. Scrape it off with your thumbnail or a putty knife. Remove any traces with No. 0000 steel wool that has been moistened with mineral spirits.

Ink Stains

If the ink stain is only on the surface, it can be removed with mineral spirits and a clean cloth, then rinsed with clean water on a soft cloth. Completely dry the surface and wax with another soft cloth. Buff to a shine. If this doesn't work, the piece may have to be completely refinished.

Paint Stains

Remove wet oil-based paint with mineral spirits and latex paint with water. If the paint is dry, try to lift it off the surface with the edge of a putty knife, being careful not to scratch the wood surface. Buff with No. 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits. Wax and polish the surface.

Popular Furniture Styles

Contemporary is one popular furniture style.

Furniture is the most abundant element in a well-designed home and understanding furniture styles is the first step in purchasing furniture pieces. From early Tudor gothic styles to modern and contemporary, furniture comes in a huge variety of styles. Not all styles are appropriate for every space or mesh well with other styles. Consider these five popular furniture styles for your next design project. Does this Spark an idea?

Contemporary

Contemporary furnishings include furniture with clean, comfortable lines. The aim of contemporary furniture is the comfort of those using the space, so consideration should be given to stylish durability when choosing contemporary furniture. Livable and stylish, contemporary is often neutral, with splashes of warm, bright color. Patterns are introduced to the furniture through warm and cozy fabrics in the clean and contemporary styles. Due to the focus on comfort, contemporary furnishings are versatile and make achieving a stylish and comfortable space simple.

Modern

Modern furniture aims to achieve a cutting-edge and futuristic look. Though its name implies current style, the modern furniture movement began in the 1950s and has become a furnishing craze in since. Characterized by straight lines, geometric patterns, dark or vibrant contrasting colors and use of industrial or unusual materials, modern furniture appeals to those with an eye for retro and art-deco design.

Eclectic

Eclectic is the most often used furniture style, allowing an easy combination of existing pieces with flourishing or evolving style. Any time furniture styles are mixed to create a cozy and disjointed look, eclectic style is at work. Eclectic furniture happens when furniture is chosen based upon the style of the buyer, without regard to an era or style classification. This style is comfortable and versatile, creating a space uniquely the buyer's own.

Shabby Chic

Shabby chic is a recent furniture style movement that attempts to find new and creative uses for old pieces. Shabby chic furniture makes use of re-purposing older furniture pieces with a new and modern style. Those searching for the shabby chic style should shop for pieces at flea markets and furniture restorers. Shabby chic furniture makes use of ornate patterns to create a throwback look, owing largely to the french country chic style. Light floral patterns, Victorian elements and painted furniture pieces are all characteristic of shabby chic style.

Rustic Country

Rustic country furniture makes use of heavy wooden pieces, natural lines and is characterized by use of antique Americana. This western style relies on iron, leather, rustic wooden and antique pieces for its comfortable, country look. Giving the decorated space rustic appeal, the country furniture style creates durable and usable living spaces.

Reupholster Chair Seats

Give your dining-room or other straight-back chairs a fresh look by reupholstering the chair seats. While occasionally you will find chair seats that can be recovered only by a professional, most seats, especially on wooden chairs, are designed for easy replacement of seating materials and fabric. Recoverable seats are usually attached to the chair frame with screws and are easily replaced using the steps below. General directions for replacing seats edged with decorative braid or headed upholstery nails follow in the final section. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Before you shop for supplies

1. Turn a chair over to see how the seat is attached. If you find a flat piece of fabric stapled across the bottom of the seat, remove staples and fabric (keep fabric as a pattern for replacement). You should see screws--one at each corner of the frame and possibly more. Remove screws.

2. Remove stapled or glued seat fabric (again, keep to use as pattern). Under it, you are likely to find another muslin-like fabric; under that, foam cushioning or, on older chairs, loose cotton batting (keep all fabrics, dispose of batting). Under that you will find plywood (leave as is) or crisscrossed coarse fabric strips called buckram tape (remove and keep).

3. Measure all the materials you have saved from dismantling one chair. Multiply these measurements by the number of chairs you are reupholstering. Now you're ready to shop.

4. Locate replacement supplies. Nearly everything you need is available at a good sewing supply store. You may, however, need to call more than one store to find foam padding you can cut to size and buckram tape. Call fabric stores and describe what you need, including dimensions, for foam and buckram tape; you can also search out an upholstery supply store.

Reupholstering seats

5. Use your old materials to cut the new ones. You can work one chair at a time or on all of them, assembly-line fashion, depending on your space and time. Replace materials in the order you removed them, and attach them to the chair seat in the ways the old ones were attached (a staple gun can be used as an alternative to replacing old nails or tacks). If old buckram was drooping, replace it stretched flat. If old muslin sagged, pull it firmly over new foam. If you begin to feel as though you need more hands, anchor each layer with thumbtacks as you go along, then remove as you staple.

6. Examine old top fabric carefully before you attach the new final layer. The fabric should show you how the original craftsman folded or gathered materials at the corners to achieve a smooth fit. Learn from the previous work before beginning to staple.

7. Replace reupholstered seat on chair. If old screws were missing or fitted loosely, replace with new ones just one size larger. Take old screws with you to the hardware store if they are very old; you may need advice on replacement.

Braid, nails and springs

8. Decide whether you would like to tackle chairs with fabric covers edged in decorative braid or rows of headed upholstery nails.

These require a bit more effort but can certainly be done at home. Use the following factors to make your decision:

1. The quality of the chair. If this is a beloved family heirloom or the wood appears to be very dry with age, you may wish to practice on other chairs for a while or get professional help.

2. The complexity of previous work. Notice especially whether the top layer has been cut and seamed--this is work you will have to duplicate to get good results.

3. The presence of springs under the padding (this is often the case if the upholstered part of the seat sits 2 or more inches above the wooden frame.

9. Add a few supplies to your basic list if you have decided to go ahead. See the (if needed) category, above. Obtain some single-edged razor blades and wood-scratch repair crayons in the color of your wood finish. Use razor blades to remove glued braid carefully and repair accidental scratches from braid or nail removal.

10. Follow previous step-by-step removal instructions. Use scissors carefully (or a seam-ripper) to open any stitching--once again, your old fabric pieces will serve as patterns for new work. With careful copying, you can reproduce any necessary stitching.

11. Examine how springs were tied before removing the twine that holds them (the hardware store will have new twine). Every set of springs will be tied in the way the craftsman thought best, but the goal is always the same--a level, secure surface on which you can place replacement foam and fabric. On your first chair, you may wish to gain expertise by replacing one piece of twine at a time, till you literally get a grip on the system. Cover tied springs with buckram tape to increase stability.

12. Replace by layers. Finish with new nails, braid or both. Glue helps with both; if you are not certain that new nails will hold tight, coat old nail holes with a coat of glue and let dry; the coat of glue will slightly tighten the hold of new nails. A thin coat of glue also insures that braid stays in place. Use wood-repair crayons to cover any accidental scratches once glue is dry.
