Resident Evil Directors Cut Hints

Capcom's survival horror video game "Resident Evil" for the PlayStation became enormously successful upon its release, spawning several sequels, spin-offs and feature films. A year after the first game's release, Capcom released the "Director's Cut" version, which included a new auto-aim feature, tougher enemies and a rearranged item layout.

Exploration and Items

If you have never played a "Resident Evil" game before, select Jill Valentine as your main character. She can carry more items than Chris and can also use the lockpick, giving her easier access to some items and areas.

Explore each area in the mansion thoroughly, but use caution, especially when entering new rooms. Use the game's auto-aim function to locate hidden enemies. When you enter a room, turn to the side and press the aim button. If your character turns around to aim at something, it means that a creature is in the room and you should proceed with caution.

Press the search button to interact with the environment. Search every room thoroughly. Cabinets, furniture, paintings and control panels can hold important information and items. If you obtain a file, read it carefully. Files contain important information on puzzles or enemies. If you are stuck or lost, look through your files for information that might help you.

Carry only the most important items with you and leave one or two inventory slots open for important items you may find. Make sure to carry a weapon, ammunition, important puzzle items and an herb or first aid spray. Combine herbs to free inventory space. Leave any unnecessary items in the item crate. Since item crates are usually located near typewriters, you can leave your ink ribbons in the crate as well.

Combat

You have limited ammunition, so use it wisely. Do not try to kill every enemy that crosses your path--run around them if you can. If you must fight, stand a safe distance from the enemy to fire on it. Use the handgun against the early zombies and save your shotgun and magnum ammo for the hunters you face later in the game.

Puzzles and Ending

Most of the game's puzzles require you to find the appropriate key item and insert it into a given slot or display. If you find a locked door with a cryptic message or display near it, try inserting an item from your inventory. The key items and puzzles are usually related. For example, the blue and red jeweled eyes need to be inserted into the tiger statue's eye sockets.

Examine key items thoroughly in the menu, since some may contain hidden features. The Doom Books, for example, contain hidden medals that you can obtain by turning the books on their sides and opening them.

If you complete the game with the best ending, you will get a magnum with unlimited ammo for the next time you play. Collect and use the three MO Disks and save both supporting characters to get the best ending. If you beat the game in less than three hours, you will also get a rocket launcher for next time.

The small town of Boiling Springs is located in Cleveland County, North Carolina and was first settled in 1843. Religion and education were very important in the early history of the town, and Boiling Springs Baptist Church was one of the first buildings constructed. The first denominational high school was opened in 1905 as a boarding institution, named Boiling Springs High School. This institution continues to remains an important structure in the town's education system.

Preschool

Boiling Springs Baptist Church Daycare is the primary preschool in the area. Licensed for up to 90 students, Boiling Springs Baptist Daycare was opened in 1984 and provides spiritual and educational services for children six weeks to 4 years old. The school is located in the Boiling Springs Baptist Church and has six classrooms available for instructional use. Children are divided by age, and taught in these groups.

The Cheapest Warm Places To Live

Mexico is an affordable alternative to the high American cost of living.

The very cheapest warm places to live are no longer in the United States, but rather in Central America, parts of Asia and Mexico. Warmer still are certain locations in the Middle East or along the coastal areas of African nations like Somalia, though the trade off for temperature can be generalized anarchy and a greatly reduced quality of life. Focus on places where you have no need to fear for your life.

United States

Gaudy, warm American locales like Florida and southern California cannot be called cheap by any stretch of the imagination. If you're looking to stay within the confines of the United States and find a place that's cheap and warm, your best bets would be southern Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana, all areas in the deep south that are substantially cheaper than Florida. South Texas inland from the coast also has a nice temperature and comparatively low living costs.

Central America

For good reason, Central American countries like Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Belize have been drawing Americans south for decades. Improved political stability and infrastructure improvements have combined with great weather and extremely low costs of living appeal to expatriates the world over. For example, housing in the cosmopolitan Costa Rican city of San Jose only costs about $500 monthly. Move farther out into the countryside and that drops to about $250. Dining out runs about $5 for a full meal. Travelers will find these kinds of prices all over Central America.

Asia

For low prices and beautifully warm weather, Asia offers Thailand and Cambodia, both offering the chance to live on about $500 monthly. While many Asian nations offer a friendly population, westerners considering a move to a place like Cambodia should familiarize themselves with the bloody history of genocide -- Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge -- and poverty. Most people there are extremely poor and have a life experience almost unbelievable by American standards. Take care not to flaunt what you have.

Mexico

With the rush to Central America in full swing, Mexico sometimes receives short shrift as an affordable alternative to high U.S. prices. The weather is great, it's close and it's still quite affordable. For example, a 20-mile taxi ride that might cost $100 in Miami goes for about $20 in Guadalajara. If you don't insist on being directly on the beach, housing and food costs are still close to what you'd pay in expatriate havens like Costa Rica.

Reproduction Of Furniture

An early American chair, after reproduction.

Reproduced furniture is furniture made to look antique, from a certain time period or style. Reproduction furniture is often made similar in style to antique, yet modern in materials; new wood, or beveled glass tops, like those found on tables. Does this Spark an idea?

Rustic

Reproduced rustic furniture is simple in design, and often left unfinished, with a primitive look. Rustic furniture is the most simplistic of all reproduced furniture. Examples of rustic furniture may include usable pieces, such as tables and chairs. The rustic look is found in hunting lodges, and may include reproduced Adirondack furniture.

English

Some of the most recognized reproduced English furniture items include the Chippendale curled leg, found on chairs and end tables. The classic scallop shell design found on the top part of Chippendale chairs is also widely reproduced. Reproduced pieces may be made from traditional woods, which include oak, walnut, mahogany and satinwood. Other widely reproduced English furniture includes Victorian era pieces.

Early American

Early American reproduction furniture is styled in the Colonial Period, with the style of simple constructed wood, with little detail in regard to design. Styles reproduced include the Jacobean, Carolean and William and Mary style.

Paint An Armoire

Painting an armoire will give it a new look.

You can update the look of an armoire -- without spending a lot of money -- by painting it. For a subtle look, choose a color in the same family as your walls or other furniture. Create a bold effect by selecting a color that contrasts with the dominant color of your decor. For a quick project, just paint the exterior surfaces of the armoire. To imitate the appearance of an antique piece, brush an umber glaze over your paint job and distress the edges, corners and doors with sandpaper. Taking time to properly prepare and prime your armoire will pay off in the end with a durable paint finish. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Preparation

1. Put a drop cloth down to protect the floor. Pull out the armoire's drawers, if there are any, and set them aside. Remove all hardware, such as hinges and drawer pulls, with a screwdriver. Place the doors nearby on the drop cloth.

2. Lightly sand the armoire if its existing surface is glossy or smooth. Wipe off the armoire with a damp rag to remove dirt and dust.

3. Prime the armoire and its doors and drawers with a compatible latex primer. Most armoires are wood, but if yours is metal or laminate, use a primer specially formulated for your armoire's surface. Apply the primer with a brush. Use a 3-inch brush for large areas and a 1-inch brush for details. Take care to apply the primer in the direction of the wood grain. Allow the primer to dry before painting.

Painting

4. Paint the armoire and its pieces with a latex paint in a semi-gloss finish. Follow the direction of the wood grain. Brush out any drips as they occur. Apply two coats of paint for complete coverage, allowing the first coat to dry completely before starting the second coat.

5. Seal the paint on the armoire with a coat of water-based varnish. Varnish will help protect the surface of the paint. Allow the varnish to dry overnight to ensure that the surface will not scratch easily.

6. Reinsert the drawers once the varnish is completely dry. Screw in drawer pulls and hinges.

7. Wash the brushes with soap and water. Allow brushes to dry upright.

Patch Texture On An Existing Wall

If you have a wall in your home that has texture on it, you've probably noticed how much more interesting the wall looks than a flat wall, and how the texture helps to hide any imperfections. You may also have noticed how the texture can be knocked off if something rubs against it. If you have areas of damage to the texture, you can redo those areas without redoing the whole wall. The trick is to match the paint in both color and texture, which can require some artistic creativity on your part. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a drywall knife to scrape off the loose parts of the existing textured surface. Use a paint scraper to take the remaining surface down to bare, flat plaster or drywall. You should take off the existing texture as far back as necessary to get to a solid surface.

2. Dab textured paint onto the wall in the first scraped-out area, using the drywall knife to apply it thickly over the whole span you scraped flat in Step 1.

3. Use a trowel to work the textured paint, mimicking the existing surface. How you do this will depend on the nature of the existing texture. If it's in a series of small, random peaks, press the surface of the trowel into the paint and pull it straight down. If it's random lines set into the plaster, set them with the edge of the trowel. If it's a swirl pattern, set the trowel in the plaster and swirl it.

4. Repeat this procedure for each area of the wall that you scraped out. Look at the work from a distance frequently as you're applying the textured paint to make sure the new texture is blending in with the old.

5. Let the textured paint dry overnight.

Reasons To Use Self Storage

Before starting monthly payments on expensive self storage space, ask yourself whether the cost--often $100 or more a month--is justified for what you want to store. Old furniture with little value, for example, can be replaced with new pieces for the cost of a year or two of self storage. If you have too much clutter in your home, consider getting rid of things rather than paying to keep clutter out of sight. However, self storage does make sense in certain cicumstances. Does this Spark an idea?

You're Between Houses

Sometimes people must move out of one place before their new permanent residence is ready. Maybe the new house is under construction, or there wasn't time to shop for a house before relocating. While temporarily living in a small apartment, a hotel or with friends or family, self storage is an option that allows you to keep your furniture and belongings during the transition.

Settlement of an Estate

When there is a death in the family, sometimes the deceased's belongings need to be stored while the will is settled. Sometimes the home simply needs to be emptied to sell or be passed down, and the contents need a temporary place to go.

You Have a Small Living Space

If you don't have a garage, attic or basement, storage can be a legitimate issue, especially if you have sports equipment and other items that are only used seasonally. If you are a long-term dweller of a small apartment, condo or house, self storage may be a worth the cost for keeping things that are used every year, such as ski equipment, bikes, surfing gear and holiday decorations. Self storage may even be a necessity if you have big toys such as jet skis, ATVs, snowmobiles and motorcycles.

You're Trying to Sell Your Home

When your home needs to look like a model home that's inviting and not too "lived in," it's recommended that the contents of your home are reduced to a bare minimum so the space looks open and uncluttered. Prospective buyers will be looking at the basement and garage, too, so a temporary solution is to box toys, knick-knacks and small appliances and stash them in a self storage unit.

Rabies Shots For Cats

Rabies Shots for Cats

Rabies is a fatal disease that can infect cats and be transmitted to humans. Most states require that cats have rabies shots.

Time Frame

Kittens generally must be vaccinated against rabies once they are at least 12 weeks old and before they are 6 months old. Then, the shot may be boosted a year later. Depending on local laws, cats must then be vaccinated every year or every three years.

Benefits

While no vaccine can be 100 percent effective, the rabies shot has preven highly effective.

Considerations

Because rabies is such a serious disease, it is important to keep records of the rabies vaccination handy. They may be needed if your cat is bitten or bites somebody, or as proof of vaccination should you need to board or hospitalize your cat.

Misconceptions

Even a vaccinated cat should be taken to a veterinarian if it is bitten by a wild animal, especially if the bite is near your cat's head.

Warning

Some cats have developed cancer after being given a rabies shot. For this reason, veterinarians should always administer the shot as far as possible from the torso (rear right leg, below the knee) and owners should keep a watchful eye on the injection site for suspicious lumps that do not go away.

Make A Floating Lantern Out Of Lunch Bags

Floating lanterns will light up the sky.

It may look like a useless, good-for-nothing lunch bag to some people, but you know that with a little creativity you can make magnificent paper lanterns. Making floating paper lanterns, which are lighted bags that look like they are hovering in the air, can turn any event into something magical and unforgettable. While some floating paper lanterns are constructed with complicated designs, you can make incandescent, luminous floating lanterns effortlessly with paper lunch bags and a few supplies.

Instructions

1. Trim a 1-inch section off the top of each lunch bag with a utility knife.

2. Put a thick label at the bottom of the lunch bag. Cut two 1-inch slits at the bottom of the bag with a utility knife to make a X-shape.

3. Remove a bulb from a string of full-size Christmas lights with clear bulbs. Slide the socket through the X-shaped slit. Screw the bulb into the socket.

4. Slide another lunch bag over the bottom side of the bag.

5. Tie a ribbon around the socket tightly so there are two equal pieces of ribbon dangling.

6. Pull the ribbons tight along the side of the bag. Tie them together at the bottom of the bag.

Use Elements Of French Country Decor

Shuttered windows are an element of French country style.

French country style typically depicts an air of Provence. Relaxed, breezy, sun-swept landscapes come to mind. Plastered walls and terracotta tiles, shuttered windows and potted flowers embody the idea of French country style -- enjoying the simple pleasures of life. This style is easy to embody and can be subtly with a few pieces scattered through the space or you can delve right in down to the colors of the walls and types of flooring. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Find the right furniture. Ladder back chairs with straw seats are quintessentially Provencal. A cane chair with upholstered seats and arms or any armchair with exposed, darker wood with upholstered seats and backs will add to the French country feel. Don't let the furniture match, but each piece should complement the others. The idea is to make it look like you've been gathering pieces for a long time.

2. Use baskets for holding just about anything. Place a few blankets in a basket next to the couch or use one in the entryway to hold a few espadrilles or an umbrella. Contain a few books, maybe a few in French, in a small rectangle basket on a shelf or side table. In the kitchen, use a straw shopping basket in the corner to hold bags of potatoes and onions.

3. Incorporate fabrics of different prints and textures. Provence country style uses a variety of bright colors with small prints. You could use the prints as accents and have neutrals for larger things such as curtains. Use cheesecloth for a large window or French doors, making a gossamer curtain with a rustic texture. Paisley, toile and velvets also have their place in French country style.

4. Accent your space with framed black and white French postcards or stalks of lavender in vases. Don't shy away from a sprinkling of fringes and tassels. Stack a few antique French books on a side table.

5. Paint your walls washed-out colors of pale greens, blues, ochers or peach. For a real Provencal feel, the bottom quarter of the wall can be painted in a darker color than the upper part of the wall.

6. Floor with terracotta tiles. The traditional "tomette" style is a hexagon shaped tile, but squares and rectangles are also used.

The Best Warm Place To Retire

The best warm places to retire depend on what you desire in a destination.

If you are at an age where you imagine yourself on a sunny beach enjoying every day of your retirement, there are a number of great choices both in the United States and abroad. Retirement locales range from traditional states like Florida to developing countries such as Nicaragua. The best warm places to retire depend on your personal criteria and the standard of living you desire.

Prescott, Arizona

This popular retiree destination was number three on CNN Money's "25 Best Places to Retire" and the top warm city on its list. It is located just 100 miles north of Phoenix. While there are plentiful sunny days, there are also four distinct seasons for those who prefer a little balance to their summer days. The city is dotted with Victorian homes, 19th-century Whiskey Row saloons and a serene Courthouse Plaza. For activities, there are half a dozen golf courses, a number of art shows, film festivals, craft fairs and outdoor concerts.

St. Petersburg, Florida

If Florida is at the top of your list, consider this well-cultured and warm retirement destination. The average monthly temperature hovers between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit all year. With median home prices at $150,000 as of 2010, you can use your savings to enjoy the city's luxury shopping, fine dining and professional golf courses. St. Petersburg also offers two unique educational programs created especially for seniors at Eckerd College, where you can study a wealth of university-level subjects. There is also the Salvador Dalí Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Greenville, South Carolina

In CNBC's report, "America's Top Places for Boomers to Retire," this small city was near the top of the list. Characterized as having a "family-friendly" vibe, the city averages 220 sunny days per year. Its low home prices and friendly main street helped it get selected by "AARP Magazine" as one of the best places to "live the simple life." There's also a performing arts center and the nearby mountain woodlands of Jones Gap State Park.

Corazal, Belize

If you're considering heading south of the border but don't want to make the language jump, consider the country of Belize. This English-speaking Central American country offers pristine white beaches, tropical jungles and world-class fishing. Its "Qualified Retired Persons" program, known as the QRP, also offers a fast track to residency status. The region of Corozal is only a few miles south of the Mexican city of Chetumal where you can find modern shopping malls and cineplexes.

Costa Del Sol, Spain

If you seek a retirement adventure abroad in Europe, consider Costa Del Sol, a coastal region of 150 miles stretching from Gibraltar to the southern tip of Spain. If its quaint villages and endless beaches don't lure you, its economic slump resulting in a huge drop in home prices just might. There is also no sales tax and property tax is very low compared with the United States. The region offers more than 300 days of sunshine a year and an average winter temperature of 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Public Schools In North Carolina

North Carolina was one of 12 states to receive the Race to the Top grant.

The public school system in North Carolina is comprised of 2,279 schools, as of early 2011. This school system is attended by more than 1.3 million students in the K-12 system. Parents with children in North Carolina may want to know more about the public school system before deciding whether to enroll their child in private or public education.

Charter Schools

Charter schools are specialized educational institutions that give parents a choice as to the type of education they want their children to have. Charter schools offer more specialized education, targeted at groups such as the gifted, at-risk youth or those with affinity for an area like the arts. For example, the ArtSpace Charter in Swannanoa focuses on arts integration into all areas of education. The Clover Garden School in Burlington puts extremely high expectations on students for academic excellence. These schools are funded by public money and are open to all students, but there are limited spots available. In North Carolina, if more than one child is applying for a spot, a lottery is held.

School Report Cards

When parents are trying to make a decision about where to enroll their children, they often want to know where the top schools are, so that they provide the best educational opportunities to their children. North Carolina does not rank its schools. However, a website called the "Education First NC School Report Cards" is maintained by the North Carolina public school system. Here, you can search out the schools you are interested in and get a sense of factors like class size, student success rate, teacher education, licensing and training (see Resources).

Career & College: Ready, Set Go!

The "Race to the Top" federal grant was offered to the North Carolina public school system, and it responded with the "Career & College: Ready, Set, Go!" program. The goal of this program is to make sure that more students are graduating from high school, and that when they do they are better prepared for college and careers in the modern world. This program focuses on supporting educators and on implementing more effective standards and assessments.

Teacher Improvement

North Carolina public schools have embarked on a continuous program of teacher improvement and development. This is part of the Career & College initiative, but is a special area of focus for the State Board of Education. Some goals included in the teacher improvement program are to have much more widespread professional development resources and professionals available to teachers. By 2014, the program aims to have more Teach for America teachers working in low-performing districts, and it also wants to have a program in place to recruit and train graduates in North Carolina for working and teaching in those environments where Teach for America is not being used. This includes a three-year training strategy for teachers going into challenging work environments.

Ideas For Building A Bedroom Dresser

Building a bedroom dresser is a more complex project than many others and should be attempted only after success with several simpler do-it-yourself tasks. You need to know use power tools, build boxes with straight angles and prepare and attach lumber.

Although dressers can be very different from one another, all dressers should be designed with the following factors in mind: purpose, size, appearance and drawer mechanism. Does this Spark an idea?

Purpose

Consider the purpose of your dresser. Do you want it to hold all your clothing, or just your socks and underwear? Do you want it to hold toys or office supplies? Will it go in a formal guest bedroom or into the nursery?

The purpose will determine many facets of the other factors. For example, a dresser for all your clothes will be much larger than one for stationery. One to match your bedroom set will have a different appearance from one in your childrens' room.

Size

When considering how big to make your dresser, first think about its location. For example, if you want it to go beneath a window, it shouldn't be taller than the bottom of the window frame. Once you know it will fit, then think about general dimensions within those guidelines.

Generally, a dresser should be between 1 1/2 and 2 feet deep. Narrower drawers often fall out when pulled far enough to reach into. Deeper drawers mean losing stuff in the back.

Also consider the width of each drawer. Some dressers are simply a vertical stack of drawers, each about as wide as the dresser, while others have multiple smaller drawers at each level. Although multiple drawer arrangements can be more convenient to use, they are substantially more complex than single drawer dressers.

Appearance

The appearance of dressers varies widely. Think about how you want it to look before you even visit the hardware store. A dresser built to match your oak bedroom set will look very different from a colorful dresser for the kids' room. These differences will affect your choice of wood, paint and hardware like knobs and pulls.

Drawer Mechanism

There are three general mechanisms for dresser drawers.

The simplest method is building a full shelf for each drawer, essentially building a bookcase with a shelf for each drawer. This makes a very sturdy dresser, although it will be quite heavy. This arrangement also makes for a lot of friction on the bottom of each drawer, thus making drawers harder to open.

A second method is to attach 1/2-inch strips on the inside of the dresser, level with the opening of each drawer hole. For drawers 2 feet wide or wider, another inch-wide strip in the center is advisable. This arrangement makes drawers much easier to open and uses less wood, although the dresser will be somewhat less sturdy than the bookcase method.

Finally, dozens of drawer hardware kits are available to buy. These arrangements use tongue-in-groove or wheel-and- runner systems that make for easy-opening drawers. Most are fairly easy to install, although they are more expensive than the other two mechanisms.

Construction Method

The actual method for building your dresser will vary substantially based on the choices you make. However, each method will follow these steps:

1. Measure and cut the lumber for the front, back, top, bottom ad sides of the frame.

2. Measure and cut the lumber for the drawers.

3. Cut holes for the drawers in the front lumber.

4. Prep the lumber by drilling screw holes, sanding and painting.

5. Attach the top, bottom and sides of the frame together.

6. Install the drawer mechanisms in the frame.

7. Attach the back and front of the frame.

8. Build the drawers.

9. Insert the drawers, sanding and adjusting for a smooth fit.

10. Add details like decoration and knobs.

Queen Anne Sofa Styles

Queen Anne sofa styles are elegant.

Known for their beauty and elegance, Queen Anne sofa styles are named after 18th-century Queen Anne Stuart, daughter of King James II. Since the demand for luxurious Queen Anne furniture has resurfaced, you can find the sophisticated style in many antique stores and furniture showrooms across the nation. Most Queen Anne sofa styles are best-suited for formal, traditional living room settings. Does this Spark an idea?

Cabriole

The Queen Anne era introduced scrolling woodwork and cabriole claw-foot wooden legs into sofa design. Most of the wood trim has a dark mahogany color that adds depth and elegance to the style. Woodwork on Queen Anne sofas tends to be ornate with handcrafted carvings accentuating the upholstery.

Button-Tufted

Textured fabrics, striped patterns and floral designs are commonly used on Queen Anne sofas. These patterns often include include darker colors like hunter green, chocolate brown, deep yellow gold and burgandy. Queen Anne sofas often have button-tufted fabrics on both the seat and the back of the couch.

Camel-Back

Queen Anne sofas often incorporate the camel-back design into the structure of the couch. The camel-back style is a smooth rolling design that resembles the rolling humps of a camel. The upholstery of the sofa follows the scrolling camel-back woodwork that outlines the back of the couch.

Loveseat

Sofas from the Queen Anne era comfortably seat two large adults or three small individuals. The term "loveseat" did not exist during the introduction of the Queen Anne era but it correctly describes the size and seating capabilities of the Queen Anne sofa. As a result, multiple Queen Anne sofas are generally used to decorate a living room or large living space.

Kill Lawneating Ants

Where there is one ant, there are millions not far away.

Ants can be more than just pests that sting and hurt you and produce unsightly hills. Ants can eat your lawn -- in fact any place with flowers, buds or other plants that provide nutrients. You can take steps to kill the ants when they come to feed but you must get to the hill to really eliminate them. There are several ways you can do this but if you don't get the queen, you'll never completely get rid of the ants. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Search for and find two main locations on your lawn to target the ants. The first is any spot where the ants are feeding -- places where they are eating the grass/buds. The second is the main ant hill.

2. Spray the affected lawn with a pesticide that will kill the ants without damaging the plants. Please note that this may draw the ants away from this location but they will search elsewhere so long as the mound stands.

3. Pour about 3 gallons of boiling water into the ant hill using a pot that you can safely transport the water without hurting yourself. You can then sprinkle dry oatmeal or grits around the hill, as this will cause any remaining ants to burst once they eat it.

4. Observe your lawn over the next few weeks and look for any other patches that indicate the ants are feeding. Spray your insecticide over these areas.

5. Switch to an insecticide on the ant hill if it is clear this patch is still thriving. A liquid insecticide sprayed onto and into the hill can work but it's better to use pellet baits that the ants will take inside, to the queen.

Problems With Rubberwood

Because of its tropical climate, Malaysia was one of the first countries to export large quantities of rubberwod and rubberwood products.

Rubberwood has not traditionally been used for furniture and utensil manufacture. However, as highly-prized tropical hardwoods have become scarcer and more valuable, rubberwood furniture, toys and other implements have become more common. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the beginning of the use of rubber in many industries revitalized the Malaysian sawmill and wood processing industry. Does this Spark an idea?

Stains

Rubberwood is susceptible to fungus and oxidation stains. Although the stains can occur any time before finishing, it can be an especially serious problem before rubberwood has been dried. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, rubberwood is naturally high in sugars and can, therefore, attract fungal infestations. These problems can be minimized by quick and proper drying procedures. Rubberwood is frequently impregnated with a borax-based chemical solution to reduce problems with biological pests. This is done under high pressure. In some cases, initial moisture content of the wood after pressure treating can be as high as 200 percent, according to Thai Science.

Insects

Rubberwood can be attacked by wood boring insects if not dried promptly. Like problems with fungal infestations and stains, the high natural sugar content of the rubber tree is a component in attracting boring insects. This is an especially serious problem in tropical climates. The best way to ensure fewer insect problems is to saw and properly treat the wood as soon as possible after the tree is felled. The pressure treatment that minimizes fungal stains is also effective in limiting insect damage.

Warping

Because rubberwood is naturally high in moisture and often pressure treated in a way that adds more moisture, it has a tendency warp, twist, bow and sometimes split. Avoiding problems with warping in rubberwood starts with how the wood is cut. Backsawn rubberwood has less of a tendency to warp. According to Paneltech, using wide spacers between the boards when drying the lumber can also lead to more warping during the drying process. By using a kiln at between 140 and 185 F and drying the wood for between 8 and 12 days until it reaches 6 to 16 percent moisture, warping problems can be further reduced.

Remove Wax From Woodwork

Melted candle wax can be removed from woodwork.

Having candles throughout your home adds ambiance and a nice decorative addition to your home's decor. Unfortunately, burning candles can cause wax to drip on tables and floors. If you notice melted wax on your woodwork, do not panic. You can remove wax from woodwork without harming or warping the wood's protective finish. It is best to tend to wax on woodwork as soon as possible to prevent any staining. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Fill a ziplock bag with ice cubes and then close the bag. Put the bag of ice cubes directly on the wax drippings until the wax hardens.

2. Use a plastic spatula to pry the wax off the woodwork. Work slowly to remove the wax; do not scrape vigorously, as that may damage the woodwork.

3. Dip extra-fine steel wool in mineral spirits. Rub the area where the wax once was with the steel. This will aid in removing any smaller pieces of melted wax that remain.

4. Wipe the area dry with a soft cloth.

5. Polish the woodwork with a soft cloth and wood polish to ensure the woodwork stays protected.

Problems With Hanging A Porch Swing

A swing is often part of a fully decorated porch.

Installing a porch swing can make the porch into a more enjoyable space with a place to sit and view nature, entertain guests or greet neighbors. Most ready-made porch swings come with a full set of chains and hardware for hanging, but even these kits require some thought and planning on the part of the homeowner. Does this Spark an idea?

Space

One of the biggest problems with hanging a porch swing is finding a place on the porch with adequate space. The swing needs a large amount of clearance in front of and behind, it. The experts at This Old House Magazine suggest at least 4 feet of clearance for the swing's arc. The space below a porch swing, (about 1 1/2 feet off the ground is ideal) also must remain clear for a sitter's legs to hang freely. Space issues mean that a narrow porch may not have enough space for a large porch swing, and even a wider porch may need existing furniture moved out of the way to accommodate the swing.

Securing the Hangers

The porch swing must hang secure enough to hold several hundred pounds or the weight of several adults and the books, pets or children they may carry on the swing. Finding a joist that can anchor the hangers and support the weight of the swing and its load is a problem on some porches. The website Front Porch Ideas and More suggests locating a joist that is at least 2x6 inches in size and predrilling holes for the eye screws that serve as hangers. On porches with a finished ceiling that obscures the joists, accessing the joists is a major undertaking that involves cutting into the ceiling and replacing or patching it once the swing's hangers and chains are in place.

Comfort and Noise

With the swing in position, there are sometimes problems with fine tuning it. These may include getting the swing comfortable to sitters. Hard wooden or metal bench swings may need pillows or a padded seat cover to provide comfort for any length of time. Some swings may also have a jerky, uneven motion. Adding comfort springs is one way to help reduce discomfort but adds cost and leads to a more complex installation process.

Noise is another potential problem as a porch swing's chains, hangers and springs age. Metal rubbing against metal can cause a shrill squeaking that oil or grease may help to alleviate for a time.

Labor

Hanging a porch swing is a labor-intensive process, and homeowners without several strong family members or helpers may need to hire a professional. Besides climbing to the roof of the porch to install the hangers, someone will actually have to lift the swing assembly into place to attach it to the chains, which means lifting the heavy, bulky swing and holding it in position long enough for someone else to affix the hardware. The entire process leaves workers in danger of falls or injury from dropping the swing on exposed feet or hands.

Types Of Speaker Cloth

Types of Speaker Cloth

Speaker cloth is the fabric that covers the grill, or the removable front, of the speaker cabinet that hides the speakers inside and gives the cabinet a finished look. Synthetic fiber is best for speaker cloth because natural fibers may relax over time and cause the cloth to sag. In addition, natural fibers are not usually acoustically transparent, meaning they will prevent some higher frequencies from making it past the grill cloth.

Acoustic Grill Cloth

It is best to purchase speaker cloth manufactured specifically for use on speaker grills. This is called acoustic grill cloth. This cloth is made from synthetic fibers that do not stretch. The fibers are smooth so that sound waves are not impeded by them, thus ensuring acoustic transparency. Acoustic grill cloth comes in black, gray, brown and some lighter natural shades. Buy this cloth at acoustic supply stores, some electronic supply stores and fabric stores, as well as online.

Single-Knit Polyester

If you cannot find acoustic grill cloth, find some single-knit polyester at a fabric store. This fabric is made from smooth synthetic fibers, and the acoustic transparency is preserved. It is somewhat more stretchy than acoustic grill cloth, but it can be stretched over the speaker grill and glued so that it does not sag. This fabric is much less expensive than acoustic grill cloth and comes in a larger variety of colors.

Steel Mesh

Sometimes speakers need to be installed in an environment in which they are prone to damage, such as in rooms where small children play or in outdoor concert arenas. In this case, consider installing steel mesh over the grill of the speaker to protect it from damage. You can purchase varying strengths of the mesh from acoustic supply stores or from hardware stores. It is easy to work with, cut, and form, and it can be painted. Install steel mesh over the grill of a speaker, then cover the mesh with acoustic fabric to hide the mesh.

Keep in mind that, since steel is not acoustically transparent, some sound quality will be lost since the mesh is directly in front of the speakers. However, if the speakers must be protected, it is a good compromise for protection and aesthetics.

Start A Troubled Teens Group Home

Teens who are dealing with difficult issues, such as substance abuse, psychiatric problems or issues with school or family life, may need assistance outside their own family. There are times when a teen's behavior and problems are beyond the scope of what their parents can deal with effectively. Living in a group home for troubled teens may help an adolescent learn new ways of dealing with problems. If you enjoy working with young people and want to make a difference, starting a group home is an excellent way to help teens get back on track.

Instructions

1. Determine what type of teen issues you will focus on. For example, some teen group homes may be geared to teens who have drug problems, delinquent behavior or are runaways. Although the group home may deal with teens with more than one issue, having a main focus may help with obtaining funding and developing a mission statement.

2. Put together a board of directors. To get funding, most state, federal and private funding agencies require the group home have a board of directors. Possible board members might be teachers, school principals, directors of juvenile detention centers, counselors, child psychiatrists and attorneys--professionals who may have knowledge and experience working with troubled teens.

3. Consider becoming a non-profit agency. Although becoming a non-profit is not mandatory, it may be easier to get funding. It will also make the group home eligible for grants and tax exemptions. At the state level, it's necessary to file an Article of Incorporation. Requirements vary by state. Contact your Secretary of State's office for information. For federal exemptions, you will need to register your group home as a 501(C) charitable organization with the Internal Revenue Service.

4. Decide what services you will offer. In addition to providing a place to live, the group home should consider services such as individual and group counseling, tutoring and life skills classes.

5. Obtain funding. Consider applying for state and federal grants. Visit USA.gov. It provides information for non profits on the different types of grants available for teen group homes. Solicit donations from private foundations and businesses. Hold fund-raising events in the community.

6. Locate a property to turn into a group home. Zoning laws will, to some extent, determine where you can have a group home. Laws vary by county and by state. The number of teens you will have at any one time at the home may also be restricted by law.

7. Hire staff. A certain ratio of staff to teens may be required by law. All staff members will need to have a criminal background check completed.

Plywood Crafts

Plywood can be used for a variety of craft projects.

Plywood is an inexpensive, readily available material you can use to create all kinds of craft projects. Look for patterns online or create your own. Finished projects can be painted or stained to your liking. Whether you choose to build projects for kids, your workshop or your garden, work within your skill set and work up to larger more complicated plans as your confidence grows.

Seasonal Lawn Figures

Seasonal lawn figures can be cut from plywood and painted by hand. Christmas figures like snowmen, reindeer and Santa Clause are all good ideas. Create Halloween figures like witches, cats and ghosts to decorate your yard. For Easter build a bunny, some chicks or spring flowers. Other themes include Valentine hearts and St. Patrick's day shamrocks or leprechauns. Another idea is to create a stork to welcome new babies, or use different characters to celebrate milestone birthdays.

Children's Furniture

Plywood is a material that can be used to create many different projects for the playroom or your child's bedroom. Things like toy boxes or chests are a sure bet with plywood. Another idea is to create a wall hanging by cutting out any shape, adding knobs and hanging it on the wall to hang up robes, hoodies or jewelry. These ideas can be painted in bright colors with nontoxic paint to fit into any design scheme.

Workshop Items

For the workshop, plywood can be an especially good choice as it can take a little wear and tear. Use it to build stools, benches, a cutoff bin for scraps of wood and a workbench. You could also build a selection of shelves and wall cabinets, with or without doors, to keep your shop organized. Other ideas include work surfaces for different tools and sawhorses to help you complete your projects with ease. Another craft project for the workshop is a bench mounted toolbox with dividers for handheld tools.

Garden Ideas

Plywood can be used for a large selection of garden projects. One idea is to build a birdhouse or a bird perch for your yard. You can also use a scroll saw to cut out various shapes that can be painted and affixed to your fence or house. Think of themes like flowers, stars and woodland creatures to create a touch of whimsy to your outdoor spaces. Another thing you can do with plywood is to create a garden bench to place in a special corner of the garden.

Restore Teak Outdoor Furniture

Teak patio furniture: brand new and after patina

Teak patio furniture has become increasingly popular, especially when used outdoors. When teak patio sets are new, the wood is a beautiful honey color. After prolonged exposure to the sun, the wood color weathers to a silver-gray color. It's relatively simple to restore your teak patio furniture back to its original color. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean the Teak Patio Furniture

Apply a 2 to 1 solution of mild detergent with water to the teak patio furniture. Use a soft bristle brush to help remove the gray patina. The brush will do a good job of removing most of the patina if your teak patio set is only a few years old.

If your outdoor furniture has been weathered for a longer period of time, after cleaning, use a fine-grade sandpaper to remove the most outer layer of the furniture. You can also use a chemical stripper, which can be found at most home-improvement or marine supply stores.

2. Apply Teak Oil

Apply teak oil to help brighten the teak patio set and give it luster. The oil does not protect the teak patio furniture from future weathering; it only helps to bolster its appearance.

3. Preserve the Look

To keep teak patio sets looking new and with a honey hue, use waterproof outdoor furniture covers whenever your teak patio furniture is not in use. These outdoor furniture covers will help to shield the teak from the sun's damaging UV rays, as well as to protect it from other outdoor elements.

4. Consider Storing Teak Patio Sets

To keep your teak looking new, bring it indoors when it's not in use for an extended period of time. Any outdoor furniture ideally should be brought inside during the colder months, but teak and other woods deserve special consideration. Because woods tend to expand and contract, be sure not to move the teak patio furniture from one extreme to another too quickly. Instead, move it from your patio, to the garage, and then into your home over the course of a few days. This will help to prevent teak patio sets from splitting.

Make Your Own Lamp Light Kits

Making your own lamp kits doesn't take long

Lighting kits are easy to purchase already assembled, but if you are planning to do more than one lamp project and want to assemble them yourself, buy each piece separately at your local hardware store and make your own lamp kits. Do-it-yourself lamp kits also make great projects for teaching Scouts or shop students the basics of electrical wiring. They also enable you to incorporate the idea of recycling by choosing a lamp base that is used or from the local charity shop. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Go to your local hardware store and find the lighting section. Look for the lighting supplies that are loose and in bins. The loose parts will be cheaper than if you buy them in packaging. Larger hardware stores such as Lowe's and Home Depot will always have lighting supplies such as this in bins.

2. Pick out a standard socket. You can choose from one with a turn switch, a push button or a pull chain. The push button kind is the most common.

3. Pick out the electric harp. This is the U-shaped frame that goes up either side of the light bulb and on which the lampshade rests. Pick out three brass nuts, one steel washer, one rubber washer, one 8-foot cord, plus one 1 1/2 nipple.

4. Choose a screw-on finial that will fit on the top of your electrical harp. There are wide variety to choose from, but if you'd like the least expensive, choose the inexpensive 1-inch brass finial that looks sort of like a top hat.

5. Sort and place your lamp kit into the one gallon storage bag until you are ready to assemble your lamp. Not only will this keep all of your pieces together, but keep moisture and humidity out of the light socket.

Make Your Own Lined Drapes With Rods

Make a real impact to any room by fashioning your own lined drapes.

Luxurious drapes, lined and suspended elegantly from their curtain rods, add that special touch of class to any room. If your interior design budget cannot stretch to purchase made-to-measure drapes, you can make them yourself for a fraction of the cost. With basic craft skills and a touch of patience you can hang drapes that make a real style statement in your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height of the window from the curtain rod to where you want the bottom of the curtains to fall; add 4 inches to the measurement. Measure the length of the curtain rod; add 12 inches to allow the drapes to be pleated even when drawn. Write down the measurements. Purchase the right amount of fabric for your curtains and curtain lining. Remember the fabric will be cut to make two curtains.

2. Lay out the drapery fabric and fold it in half across the width. Pull the fabric taut and press all the way along the fold with an iron. Cut along the fold with sharp scissors until you have cut the fabric in half. Repeat this process with the lining material.

3. Lay one piece of drapery fabric flat, with the good side facing down. Take one piece of lining material and lay this on top of the fabric. Pin the corners together. Insert pins along each side of the material 3 inches from the edge to tack the two pieces together, then remove the pins at the corners.

4. Make a 2-inch fold all the way along the bottom edge of the curtain and hold it in place with pins. Press along the fold using a hot iron to produce a sharp crease. Fold along the left and right edges of the drape in the same way and tack with pins before pressing with the hot iron.

5. Sew the material together along the bottom and each side on the outside of the rows of pins to create a hem. Stitch the lining to the curtain fabric along the top edge just above the row of pins. Using a sewing machine will make this part of the task go much more quickly although it can be done by hand. Remove all the pins from the top, bottom and sides of the drape.

6. Take the curtain rod and lay it just above the top hem. Loop the curtain material over the rod and pin it in place allowing enough room for the rod to slide freely through the fabric tunnel. Remove the rod and stitch along the row of pins before removing them.

7. Construct the drape for the other side of the window in the same manner. Feed both panels onto the curtain rod and hang the rod in its supports.

Use Snow Blades

Snow blades are shorter than skis

While Snowblades is actually the brand name of a popular ski board introduced by Salomon in 1998, many new and experienced ski boarders refer to the sport as snow blading, or ski blading. The sport itself has been around since the 1960s. Snow blades are much shorter and wider than skis, and both ends are usually rounded. They are often used without poles in a method that is sort of like roller blading. They are perfect for everything from snow blading in deep powder to doing extreme tricks.

Instructions

Getting Ready

1. Choose snow blades that are the proper length and width for your body and preferred ski blading style. Longer snow blades are more stable when going fast. They are best for carving. Shorter snow blades are easier to turn making them good for tricks.

2. Choose ski board boots that are stiff in the sides. Regular ski boots and hard shell snowboard boots will accept the snow blade bindings. Snow blade bindings will not fit soft shell snowboard boots.

3. Mount the bindings if they are not pre-installed. Check whether your bindings release or not--releasable bindings have a lever. Most pre-installed bindings are non-release but some high-end ski blades come with releasable bindings.

4. Put the snow blades on by snapping your boots into the binding. Make sure your toes does not touch the front of your boots for comfort.

Snow Blading

5. Stand on your snow blades about shoulder width apart. Push off with one foot while sliding the other forward, as if you were roller blading. Some people use poles for balance, but those are really meant for long skis.

6. Move your legs back and forth in a scissor-like motion to propel yourself forward. Keep the uphill blade about half a boot length ahead of the other blade to maintain stability.

7. Bend forward at the waist with your knees bent and your ankles flexed when going downhill. Use your arms and hands to maintain balance.

8. Slide your inside foot about a foot in front of your other foot when turning. Turn quickly to the side with both blades to stop.

Southwest Home Decorating Ideas

Colors such as orange and blue are often used together in Southwest decorating.

The area known as the Southwest ranges from the Grand Canyon to the Mexican border and includes the states of Nevada, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Southwestern design is known for its relaxed, casual and rustic feel. Southwestern style is easily identifiable by the use of bright colors and decorating with Native American crafts from pottery to colorful woven fabrics. Does this Spark an idea?

Colors

Dozens of colors can be used in your home to reflect the Southwest. These colors can be used when choosing paint color, accessories and soft furnishings. Some of these colors include sage green, adobe red, orange, salmon pink, turquoise and desert-toned neutral hues such as beige and brown. Other colors you can use in Southwest decorating are bright yellow, light blue and teal. Some ways that you can combine these colors are to use sage, brown, orange and teal; adobe red, beige, brown and orange or salmon pink, turquoise, yellow and brown.

Fabrics

Upholstery in Southwestern decorating is usually made of woven fabrics, suede or leather. Depending on the look you are going for, the leather may be distressed. Woven fabrics, some of which have colorful diamond patterns or images of animals such as eagles or rabbits, are characteristics of Southwestern design. Fabrics with these designs may be found in the form of throw pillows, bedspreads, blankets, tapestries and area rugs. Additionally, painted hides, furs and skins are used in Southwestern design.

Furniture

For furniture that is not upholstered, such as chairs and tables, wood is the most common choice of material. The kind of wood used is usually rustic pine in a distressed finish instead of clean lines. Furniture may also be a combination of materials such as wrought iron, wood and leather. Tables are usually large and rectangular in shape and may be carved. Southwestern furniture is also known for its metal accents, especially by the use of "clavos," or decorative nails. This rustic, decorative element are made of iron or aluminum and are also often used to decorate doors and gates.

Accessories

The finishing touches for Southwest decorating are the accessories that you choose. Painted terracotta pottery, woven baskets made of pine needles and yucca, and kiva ladders are just some of the things that you can use to decorate your home. Colorful tiles may be used on the walls and countertops and as flooring material. Wrought iron is also used in decorative elements such as in candelabras or wall art in the shape of a bucking horse, coyote or cactus. The use of rawhide lampshades, Native American medicine sticks, steer skulls, bows and arrows and dream catchers also add a touch of the Southwest in your home.

Political Events Of The Middle Ages

The Middle Ages was an age of kings and empires.

The Middle Ages encompasses the period between the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 and the end of the Hundred Years War between England and France in 1453. This stretch of nearly 1,000 years saw sweeping social changes, the rise and fall of empires and the rise of a major world religion resulting in political tensions between the East and West that still resonate today.

The Byzantine Empire

While the Western Roman Empire fell to Germanic tribes in 476, the Eastern Roman Empire, comprised of the Balkans and the Middle East, survived as the Byzantine Empire until the Ottoman Turks took the city of Constantinople in 1453. A fusion of Greek culture within a framework of Christianity, it was ruled by an emperor who styled himself as God's direct representative. The Catholic church in Europe considered the Byzantine Empire schismatic, and sought to force them back under the control of the Pope in Rome.

The Rise of Islam and the Crusades

Islam was founded by Muhammad in the seventh century in the city of Mecca. After converting or conquering surrounding tribal areas, Muhammad continued to spread Islam, eventually uniting the Arabian peninsula under the auspices of the new religion. After the Muslims took Jerusalem and moved into the Iberian Peninsula, the Catholic church launched military crusades against them in an effort to drive them out of Europe and the Holy Land.

The Ottoman Empire

The Ottoman Empire began in western Turkey in the early 14th century, starting as a small military state and expanding over the next hundred years until it breached the mighty Byzantine Empire. Eager to topple the bastion of Christianity in Eastern Europe and the Arab world, the Ottomans moved their capital into Europe in 1402 and began to threaten the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. Sultan Mehmed finally took the city in 1453, the year that marked the end of the Middle Ages.

The Hundred Years War

The Hundred Years War between England and France stretched from 1337 to 1453, with periods of relative calm interspersed with battles and sieges. The war began over French attempts to regain control of the duchy of Aquitaine in southwest France from the English. England controlled parts of France since the Norman Conquest of 1066, in a complex arrangement under which the English ruler was a vassal of the French ruler. The end of the war saw England ejected from Europe, except for a stronghold in Calais.

Start A Youth Group Home In California

Making a home for at-risk youth.

The Community Care Licensing Division of the California Department of Social Services is responsible for licensing and overseeing group homes that care for the state's at-risk children. Only nonprofit corporations may be compensated with state foster care funds to operate a group home. The corporation's Board of Directors ensures that the group home is operated in compliance with the sections of Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations that govern group homes.

Instructions

1. Attend an orientation for prospective group home licensees conducted by Community Care Licensing (CCL). You must contact the CCL office in your area to schedule your attendance at the orientation (See Resources). The orientation session will provide a review of the regulations that govern group home operations and will give you instructions for completing your licensing application. Following the orientation, CCL will send you an application packet with directions for completing your licensing application.

2. Complete the licensing application and supporting documents. The application requires completing the specified forms, a narrative program description and documentation of the information. You will be asked to describe the site where you will operate the group home and you must provide a valid lease or deed of ownership to document your control of the proposed site.

3. Complete a criminal background check on the individual who will represent the corporation as the applicant for the license, usually the corporation's chief executive officer, and for specified group home employees, including any adult responsible for administration or direct staff supervision and any staff person or volunteer who will have contact with clients. The criminal background check requires each individual to submit fingerprints to the Department of Justice using the Livescan system. CCL will also review the state Child Abuse Central Index regarding the applicant and group home staff.

4. Obtain required fire and water clearances for the facility. Ask your local fire department to inspect the premises, make recommendations for any corrections that may be needed and to provide you with an official fire clearance. If your facility uses water from a private source for human consumption, you will also have to arrange for an inspection and bacteriological analysis to verify the safety of the water.

5. Meet with CCL personnel for a preliminary assessment of the application. CCL personnel will review your application and will notify you in writing if it is incomplete or does not comply with licensing regulations. The individual who reviewed the application will meet with you to help you understand what changes are required and to make recommendations for bringing your program into compliance with regulations.

6. Prepare for CCL's pre-licensing visit. CCL personnel will inspect your group home facility to determine if it meets regulatory standards. CCL personnel will examine the physical plant for defects and may make inquiries regarding program implementation. You will be given a written report that includes any corrections that are required prior to licensing. When all corrections have been made, CCL may issue a provisional license or the final license.

Take Apart A Recliner Chair

Taking apart a recliner makes it easier to move.

Moving furniture can be a hassle, especially if you do not have access to a truck. Fortunately, you can take most recliner chairs apart into several smaller pieces. You may have to remove some bolts or release a set of retention pins to disconnect the components of the recliner. Check your owner's manual for disassembly instructions specific to your recliner chair's make and model. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Move to the back of the recliner and reach into the gap between the backrest and the sides of the chair. Pull down on the metal levers inside the gap to release the backrest from the recliner's frame.

2. Lay the recliner on its side so you can access the bottom of the seat. Find the pins that connect the seat to the arms of the chair. These are usually near the front of the seat. Remove the retaining screws using a screwdriver from the pins, and set them aside. Slide the pins out to release the front

3. Lift the seat until you can reach the screws that attach the seat to the sides of the recliner. Remove the screws and lift the seat out of the chair.

4. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the bolts securing the arms of the chair. Remove the bolts and pull the arms away from the recliner's frame.

Planting Guide To Blackthorn

Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), also known as sloe, is a small tree or shrub native to Eurasia and North Africa. It is a common sight in Great Britain, where it is often planted in hedges. Blackthorn is classified in the Prunus genus, which also includes peaches, plums and almonds. Does this Spark an idea?

Benefits

Blackthorn is a dense, twiggy plant covered in spines. As such, it forms an impenetrable barrier when planted as a hedge. In addition to protecting your home from unwanted visitors, blackthorn berries (commonly referred to as sloe berries) attract songbirds that nest in its branches. In the springtime, this shrub explodes with delicate white and pink flowers similar to plum blossoms.

Growing Conditions

The blackthorn is a hardy bush.

Blackthorn is a notoriously hardy shrub. It may be planted in either sandy or clay-heavy soils and survives periods of drought that destroy other hedge plants. When planting blackthorn, however, make sure to pick a shade-free spot, as this plant adores full sun. This plant also tolerates exposure to cold. It is hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 5 to 9.

Planting Tips

As blackthorn grows tenaciously in poor soil, it does not require soil additives to thrive. Once established, members of the Prunus genus do not need to be pruned back, unless their limbs become damaged or diseased. The best time to plant blackthorn is in the autumn, when rains have softened the soil and the summer warmth remains.

Plans On Build A Farm Table Bench

Build a bench to match the warmth of your farm table.

Farm tables are typically rustic and worn with use from family gatherings. Build a bench for additional seating for your farm table. A farm table bench should be simple in construction and made from thick, warm-toned wood such as cedar or walnut. The bench consists of a seat, legs and center support. Give the bench a clear finish to allow the warmth of the wood and simple design to come through. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Stand the two 2-by-12-by-16-inch boards upright on a work surface, parallel to each other and 56 inches apart. These are the legs.

2. Lay the 2-by-12-by-60-inch board on top of the legs, with its ends flush with the top of the leg boards. This is the seat.

3. Drive four evenly spaced flush-trim wood screws through the top of the seat into the end of each of the legs using a screw gun.

4. Turn the bench over so the legs stick up, and center the 2-by-4-by-56-inch board between the legs with the 2-inch side against the underside of the seat. This is the center support.

5. Drive two evenly spaced flush trim wood screws through the outside of the legs into each end of the center support.

6. Apply wood glue to one end of enough wood plugs to fill each screw hole. Insert a plug into each screw hole with the glue end in. Allow the glue to dry.

7. Sand the wood plugs flush with the surface of the wood using a fine-grit sanding block.

8. Apply a clear coat finish to the bench. Allow the finish to dry.

Jaws Unleashed Ps2 Cheats

Jaws Unleashed was released for the Playstation 2 in 2005 by Majesco. In Jaws Unleashed, users play as the famed shark from the Steven Spielberg film. The game is considered a "sandbox" game, meaning that the players navigate an open world and complete objectives in whichever way they see fit. As Jaws the shark, players destroy docks, ram boats and gobble up unsuspecting divers.

Unlock Level Select

According to IGN.com, there are two different ways to unlock the ability to select levels. First, players can collect all 45 license plates hidden throughout the game. However, if players would like this ability right off the bat, they can enter their user name as "shaaark," which will have the same result (don't include the comma or quotes).

Unlock God Mode

To unlock god mode (or, invincibility), players must collect all 50 treasure chests hidden in the game's "Open Ocean" section, which is unlocked after completing the second mission in the game. The Open Ocean is comprised of three different sections (South, East and West), and treasure chests can be collected as players progress through the remaining missions in the game (as each mission will take them deeper into the Open Ocean). There is a user-made treasure map available online, which pinpoints each treasure chest location.

Unlock One Million Points

To have 1,000,000 points automatically at the start of the game, players must enter their name as "blooood" (without the quotes). This cheat is not compatible with the cheat for unlocking level select, as you cannot enter two separate names for the same profile.

Value Of Antique Secretary'S Desks

Antique secretary's desks originated in the 1600s as small traveling desks.

The value of an antique secretary's desk largely depends on wood type, whether or not all of the original hardware is present and the overall condition. Replacement panels, drawers or hardware significantly lowers the value.

Types

Antique secretary's desks were made in numerous sizes and styles including Chippendale, Victorian and French. Typically these desks were made from hard woods like oak, walnut or mahogany, which were known for their durability. An antique secretary's desk usually has a small hutch or bookcase on top, drawers and a pull-down writing area that hides smaller drawers and cubbies in its unused position. Some styles come without the bookcase on top.

Value

With their popularity on the rise, antique secretary's desks are becoming increasingly valuable, especially those with historical significance or for which the provenance (origin) is known. The desks are highly sought after by collectors and can be quite expensive. Authentic antique secretary's desks range in value from $500 to more than $30,000, but you may be able to find one at an online auction site or a local estate sale for $200 to $400.

Considerations

Replicas of antique secretary's desks are much less expensive than authentic pieces. They can be just as attractive and are readily available.
