Make Mission Style Crown Molding

Mission style emphasizes strong straight lines.

Crown molding can create a dramatic new look for a room by adding trim that draws the eye upward toward the ceiling. Mission-style molding, also known as arts and crafts style, is simple and bold, emphasizing straight lines and geometric shapes. The best way to accent this simple style is to highlight the wood grain and to use a natural finish rather than paint once the crown molding is installed. But because this means your mistakes will be more visible, you'll need to make precise cuts and measurements when you install the molding. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Select molding that suggests a Mission style. Simple straight-cut pieces of wood will work best for a Mission style. Don't worry about making fancy cuts or angled edges. Simply join straight edges together at the corners.

2. Measure the width of each wall along the ceiling. Scan the walls and the ceiling with a stud finder and mark the studs and joists where you can nail the moldings. Never nail molding to the drywall. Make a second set of marks a few inches down from initial markings so you can still identify each site while installing a strip of molding.

3. Finish the crown molding with seal, stain and varnish before installing. Let dry before you begin installation.

4. Determine where you'll start and how you'll fit your molding together. You need to figure this out before you begin installation so you can make the necessary cuts for the molding pieces to join snugly at the corners.

5. Begin nailing the molding in place, nailing only where you've made your marks. Don't drive the nails all the way in yet. If you are running molding along a long wall and need to join two pieces together, create a scarf joint by overlapping the ends first then marking the precise length to cut to ensure a perfect fit.

6. Drive nails in fully and countersink them once all the molding is in place and snugly fitted. Use wood filler for nail holes and any small gaps at the corners.

Make Mission Style Bench Plans

Make Mission Style Bench Plans

Mission style furniture is a simple and classic design that fits with most decors. This style was made popular at the turn of the 20th century and is characterized by simple lines and materials. Mission style furniture is noted for good craftsmanship and design. It is generally made of oak and is free of decorative embellishments. A mission style bench is a classic and sturdy piece that is relatively simple to construct and will provide years of enjoyment and beauty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut oak lumber with a saw to the sizes needed to build the bench. Use a tape measure to measure the lumber. You will need one piece that is 16 inches wide by 32½ inches long for the top. Cut two pieces that are 14 inches wide by 18 inches long for the ends. You will need one piece that is 4 inches wide by 31½ inches long for the stretcher, and four pieces that are 1 inch wide by 4 inches long for the cleats. These pieces should all be one inch thick. You will also need to cut two pieces that are 4 inches wide by 29½ inches long for the rails. These two pieces should be 7/8 inch thick.

2. Attach a rail to an end piece. Place the rail on the outer edge of the end. The side of the edge and the end of the rail should be flush. Use a screwdriver to attach the rail with two wood screws. Attach the second rail to the other side of the end in the same manner. Attach the remaining end piece to the other end of the two rails.

3. Secure the top of the bench to the ends and rails. Center the top and attach to an end with two wood screws. Repeat for the other end.

4. Attach the cleat pieces to the inside of the rails. Place a cleat 4 inches from the inside of the end. It should be against the rail. Secure with a wood screw by inserting the screw through the top of the bench. Repeat until you have four cleats attached to the rails and top.

5. Attach the stretcher to the end pieces. Use a tape measure and mark four inches from the outside edge and four inches from the bottom with a pencil. Place the stretcher into position and attach with two wood screws from the outside of the end. Repeat for the other end.

6. Stain the bench to the desired color. Your bench is now ready for use.

Survive Fallout 3

Survive Fallout 3

Simply getting by in the harsh post-apocalyptic dystopia that is Fallout 3 is a challenge. You've got raiders, giant animals, killer mutants and the ever-present threat of radiation to contend with. Plus your father is missing. Before you go adventuring into the wastes of Washington D.C., there are some things you should know.

Instructions

1. Be careful what you eat. While food and drink are a primary source of health (and tend to be cheaper than Stimpacks) they give you a small amount of Radiation each time you eat them. This can be helpful for a certain quest you find in Megaton (speak to Moira in Craterside Supplies) but apart from that, too much Radiation is very dangerous.

2. Watch your Rads. Consuming too much radioactive materials will have adverse effects on your character. 200 Rads will activate Radiation Poisoning. More than 500 Rads will produce Advanced Radiation Poisoning. Both carry some negative modifiers to your character's stats. 1,000 Rads will kill your character. Note that Radiation levels can be mitigated with Rad-X pills and Rad-Away. Rad-X increases your resistance to radiation for a short time while Rad-Away brings your Radiation level down. You can reduce your Radiation level by paying a doctor to get rid of it.

3. Watch your carrying capacity. Your character can only carry so much stuff, which is determined by your Strength stat. Your Maximum Weight is indicated on your Pip Boy. Most items you carry (except really small ones) have a Weight value (WG). If you exceed your Maximum Weight, you will become Overburdened. This is detrimental. It prevents you from moving quickly and it also prevents you from rapid-traveling. Both are essential to getting out of dangerous situations quickly.

4. Always keep a weapon handy. While some situations can be resolved peacefully, there are some critters out in the wastes that simply cannot be reasoned with. When it comes down to it, there's nothing better than a good weapon at your side. Never, ever venture into the wastes without weapons. Always make sure to keep at least one firearm and one melee weapon on you at all times. Even though your gun may be good, ammunition is always scarce. When it runs out, you may not have another gun to fall back on.

5. Use the VATS: Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (default buttons will vary). This feature pauses the battle and allows you to auto-target specific body parts on your enemies. This is extra-handy for scoring headshots and generally hitting things if you're not very good at shooter games. Note that shooting in VATS mode only allows you one shot or burst; you can't empty a magazine at an enemy like you can in normal shooting mode. However, you can keep using VATS repeatedly to increase your number of accurate shots.

6. Stay down. Cover may not always be available, but the best cover is not being seen. Crouching dramatically reduces the chance of you being detected by an enemy. Remember, the best way to attack an enemy is without them knowing. Stay out of lights, move slowly and stay low when you are sneaking up on an enemy.

Traditional Styles Of Mexican Homes

Traditional Mexican homes are painted in bright colors.

From old country haciendas and colonial homes to rustic adobe ranches and tiny casitas, traditional Mexican homes are typically painted in a palette of vibrant colors. To keep the heat out, larger properties often feature high wood beamed ceilings, tiled interiors and cobbled courtyards. The architecture of Mexico was heavily influenced by Mediterranean and Moorish styles that colonists brought with them. As the richest region in Spain's colonial empire, Mexico features many houses built in the colonial style. Does this Spark an idea?

Color

Color has always been a major style element of traditional Mexican architecture. The legacy of using sun-drenched colors and paint washes of blues and green dates back to pre-Hispanic civilizations' use of bold paint for murals and pottery.

Mexico's stone wall houses are often painted in lime-based paints, so the paint can breath and colors do not fade in the sunlight. Interior walls are also covered in layers of vibrant hues, intricate stencil patterns and color contrasts are used to highlight architectural features.

Haciendas

Mexico is home to many large hacienda-style properties. These large estates were typically built in plantation areas. Elaborate dwellings for the rich and powerful, they were made up of a main house, guest quarters, stables, and servants' rooms. Large stone walled buildings, with high ceilings, haciendas often contained many concealed cool interior patios and secluded spaces. Windows have wood shutters to keep the heat out. As symbols of a family's wealth and culture, they were decorated with ornate architectural features and artwork.

Keeping Out the Heat

Due to the country's hot climate, traditional Mexican homes are often designed to provide shade and keep interiors cool. Windows are large and deep set and ceilings high to allow cool breezes to flow through homes. Walls are thick and heavy to keep out the heat. Materials that provide cool surfaces like tiles, cobbles and stone were utilized in living spaces.

Adobe Homes

Traditionally, lower income families lived in adobe style houses. These traditional Mexican homes were made of adobe, a building material made from a combination of clay-based soil, straw and water and had a roof of red terracotta tiles. These plainer, smaller homes, crafted from natural materials, originated from the techniques used by Mexican Native American cultures.

Wooden Curtain Rod Projects

Wooden curtain rods might seem too plain for the modern home, especially in rooms like a living room with many windows. Use an ornate wooden curtain rod to match other home decor features. For example, wooden rods match wooden furniture, cabinets, flooring, artwork and paneling. You can hang just about any curtain imaginable with a wooden curtain rod. The result is an easy window treatment project to update a room. Does this Spark an idea?

Finials

Wooden finials are decorative features added to plain curtain rods. Match the wooden finial to the finish of the rod. You also can refinish the rod and finials to match, or screw on wood finials that contrast dramatically with finish. If you place wooden finials on both sides of each wooden curtain rod in a room, you create a theme. These finials also fit other fixtures in the room, such as cabinet knobs and lamp switches.

Carved

An alternative to a wooden curtain rod finished with a finial on each end is a hand-carved wooden rod. If you cannot carve the wood ends of the rod yourself, you can purchase wooden curtain rods. For example, consider a curtain rod carved from mahogany or cherry. The ends of the rod can include long patterns of ornate carving. These can be themes of flowers, leaves, vines, fruits or vegetables. You can place a carved wooden curtain rod on standard curtain hardware.

Unfinished

For the woodworking enthusiast wanting to create a custom finish, look for a style like the fluted wooden curtain rod. You can find these at online retailers or at your home improvement store. According to Better Homes and Gardens, you can have a free alternative when you use interesting branches (i.e. straight or slightly bowed). After trimming to the correct length, finish each wooden branch with the paint or varnish that matches your curtains.

Traditional Spanish Party Games

A patio decorated and ready for a party.

Make your party a success by following two simple rules: First, have games that fit the theme of your party. For your Spanish-themed party, plan games that not only incorporate the Spanish language where appropriate, but that have been enjoyed by Spanish-language players over the years. Second, keep the age of your guests in mind and make sure your games are not too simple or too complicated for them. Does this Spark an idea?

Piñata

Breaking the piñata is a big part of many Spanish parties for both adults and children. The piñata is a colorful papier-mâch container filled with candies and small toys. These can be purchased many places, or one can easily be made with a balloon, papier-mâch , and brightly colored crepe paper or paint.

As part of the celebration, guests are blindfolded one at a time, given a stick, and then take turns trying to hit the piñata. When the piñata breaks, everyone scrambles in and grabs a share of the goodies that tumble out. This game is traditional at many types of traditional Mexican celebrations, such as Christmas and birthdays.

La Araña

La Araña means "the spider." The game is played by a group of children ages 5 and up. The "spider" is confined between two parallel lines on the ground, drawn about 20 feet apart. The other children all stand along one of the lines. When la araña calls out "Araña!" all of the children must cross the spider's territory and cross the other line. Anyone the spider touches must join hands with him, becoming part of the spider. This step is repeated until all of the players have been tagged. Only the players on either end of the spider can tag others as they cross. This is a good game to use up excess energy and keep everyone busy.

Color, Colorcito

One player is chosen to be "It," either by the toss of a coin or general consensus of all the players. That player then calls out "Color, colorcito," (color, little color) and adds the name of a color, such as red (rojo), at the end. The other players must all run to touch an object of that color. If a player reaches that color, she is safe. If the person who is "it" is able to touch a player before she reaches a safe object, that player becomes "it." This lively party game is played in large yards or parks, but can be played in the house with very young children. Kids of all ages enjoy playing color, colorcito.

Spanish Hacienda Paint Colors

Earth tones are common in Spanish hacienda styles.

The Spanish hacienda style of architecture originated around the Mediterranean, where there's a lot of bright sunshine. Earth tones and natural colors that reflect the beauty of sunlight are common in this traditional style. If you're building or remodeling a Spanish hacienda-style house, look at other examples of the same style to get ideas for effective color schemes. Does this Spark an idea?

Terracotta

Terracotta is a deep red color that's similar to the color of brick. It's commonly seen in Spanish hacienda architecture in the terracotta tile used on the roof. You can harmonize wall and trim colors with the color of terracotta roof tiles by choosing harmoniously differing shades of terracotta paint. Painting eaves and window trim with terracotta and the main walls with a lighter color create a pleasing contrast while simultaneously drawing the building together by presenting similar tones on the roof and at various points on the building.

Earth Tones

Earth tones emphasize natural materials such as adobe, clay and rammed earth that are traditionally used in Spanish architecture. Tones can range from light tan through ochre, sienna, brown and deep red. The lighter ends of the spectrum should be used on large walls. Broad expanses of dark colors can be overwhelming and cut down on reflected light. Darker colors can be effectively used on cabinetry, interior and exterior trim and flooring.

Yellows

The yellow spectrum creates a reminder of the brilliant Mediterranean sun. Yellows, golds and oranges create a vibrant mood for rooms such as kitchens, where there's lots of activity and bright light is valued. These tones can also make smaller rooms and closed-in alcoves seem larger by using reflected sunlight to great effect. Use bright colors as accents in larger rooms by painting a door or built-in shelf to make it stand out from the rest of the room.

Off-White

Cream, ivory and other variations of white are useful for creating areas of background that don't compete with focal points on an exterior or within a room. Painting ceilings in any color ranging from white to very light gray help illuminate the corners of the room and create a feeling of spaciousness. In hot environments, painting the exterior in a light white-spectrum color beautifies the house and helps keep it cooler under hot sunshine.

What Is A Bungalow Style House

The bungalow style home is associated with the architectural style of the Arts and Crafts bungalow, a style popularized in the early 20th century. The term has, since 1900, come to encompass other architectural styles, including the California bungalow and the Prairie bungalow. In the loosest of definitions, a bungalow style house is any small home sharing common characteristics with the Arts and Crafts style. Does this Spark an idea?

Exterior Characteristics

Bungalow homes are single family dwellings, 1 to 1 1/2 stories with low-pitched roofs. Dormers are common to the Arts and Crafts style of home, as well as the Prairie style, though the latter may exclude them. Windows vary in size and are grouped together to aid in light control. Frank Lloyd Wright, a master of the Prairie style bungalow, positioned windows to work with the orientation of the home to maximize passive solar power. Bungalows are constructed of wood and stone and include large porches, either along the front of the home or along the side, a characteristic sometimes seen in California bungalows. The overall exterior aesthetic of a bungalow home is of a horizontal application, with the house appearing to spring from the ground rather than having been built on top of it.

Interior Floor Plan

An open floor plan, in which rooms flow together unimpeded by long walls and doors, are common to the bungalow style. With the public spaces upfront, visitors may see the living room and dining room in the sweep of an eye with the kitchen situated toward the back of the house. Bedrooms and private quarters are removed from public view, tucked at the back of the home. Occupants move through open hallways from public to private areas of the home.

Interior Style

Natural materials are a mainstay of the bungalow. Wood, stone and glass make up most of the interior structure with emphasis on the natural state of these as building materials. Built-in cabinetry, half-walls with wood spindles, wood beams and wainscoting are typical of bungalow interior designs. Stone is used for flooring -- usually tiles -- and for fireplace surrounds. Though not commonly seen in bungalows designed for lower and middle class neighborhoods, the use of decorative stained glass is characteristic of the higher end Arts and Crafts bungalows.

Variations

Though a bungalow is defined by its architectural characteristics, the style has its variations. The Aeroplane Craftsman, for example, has a second story that is situated as an upper level set back from the front of the house. This second story "pops up" from the first-story roof, a roof with considerably less pitch than more typical bungalows. The Colonial Craftsman also deviates slightly from the typical and more closely resembles the contemporary ranch style architecture. The door is centrally located, as with most bungalows, but rather than multiple levels of roofing and dormers, the Colonial presents as a long, linear structure with a shallow front porch and no dormers.

Types Of Japanese Wood Furniture

The ofuro is a deep wooden tub used for soaking, not washing up.

Japanese furniture celebrates functional elegance. Wood has traditionally been crafted into simple forms inspired by and used for practical purposes. From traditional chests that turned into staircases to contemporary chests that wave in a sinuous curve, fine furniture is crafted to be beautiful and to last. Lacquer and iron and brass fittings are a few of the embellishments you might find on a fine Japanese piece but the spare wood and graceful lines of some of the classic pieces typify Japanese style. Does this Spark an idea?

Tansu

Tansu are chests, and the highly polished wood used for tansu was first crafted to hold kimonos. Before Western fashions reached Japan, kimonos and other clothes were folded and slipped away out of sight in ishi-dansu. Smaller chests were convenient receptacles for the family's tea things. Cha-dansu, or tea chests, held tea cups and pots, dishes for traditional fruits, chopsticks and chopstick rests and other essentials for tea. Hako kaidan are large tansu built to serve both as steps to a higher level of the house and generous storage cabinets.

Kotatsu

Kotatsu are tables without chairs, low to the ground and covered with blankets. The tables are attached to electric heaters today but they used to be positioned over the sunken hearth fire. People sat at the table, placed their legs beneath it to keep warm and used the table surface for dining, writing or other pursuits. Kotatsu are still used today in traditional homes where a furnace or central heating isn't available.

Ofuro

The soaking tub or ofuro is a deep ritual bath that allows you to immerse yourself fully in warm or hot water. Tubs are made from aromatic, lemony hinoki wood or cedar, at least 22 inches deep, and typically rectangular with straight sides. The bather washes outside the tub with soap and water and uses the ofuro for a relaxing, therapeutic soak. Because everyone who uses the tub washes first, the bath can be enjoyed by several consecutive bathers, conserving heating energy and water. The tub is usually surrounded by wood floor mats. Accessories include wooden washing stools and a bucket for the pre-wash. Ofuro are custom-designed as polygons, cylinders or ovals.

Contemporary Custom Designs

Japanese artists continue to imagine new ways to craft fine wooden furniture meant as heirloom pieces. Shiro Kuramata was a legendary 20th century minimalist who designed in modern plastics and synthetics as well as wood. His reinterpretation of a dresser and chest as a sinuous lacquered wood curve incorporates traditional Japanese design and a playful sense of irony. One curvy chest design has been endlessly copied by cabinetmakers in Western culture. The chest is a tall, shallow S-shaped with multiple drawers and rolling casters for feet. Rather than disappear into the room, the chest becomes a focal point that works for storage as well.

Mount A Headboard

A headboard is a functional or décor element set at the head of the bed. The headboard can be made of wood, brass, iron or wicker, and can be covered with padding and fabric. The standard headboard is 35 inches tall, from the floor to the top of the headboard. However, custom-design headboards can be much higher, and start from the mattress instead of the floor. A store-bought or homemade headboard can be attached to the wall or to the bed frame if the headboard reaches the floor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Wall Mount

1. Make a horizontal line using the level on the wall at the head of the bed. The line should be 1 inch down from the top of where you want the headboard to hang, and 1 inch in from each side. Mark the center point of the line with a vertical mark.

2. Use a stud finder to locate the studs along this line. Place a dot or vertical line across your horizontal line to show where the studs are.

3. Screw one half of the bracket set into the two outermost studs using flush mount screws on the stud. Add an additional bracket to the center stud if needed. Use two brackets for lightweight headboards or twin, double or queen-size beds. For king-size beds or very heavy headboards, use three brackets. You can use either flush mounting brackets or adjustable flush mounting brackets. The adjustable brackets are a little bit easier to use.

4. Draw a horizontal line on the back of the headboard 1 inch down from the top, and mark the center point.

5. Measure the distance of each wall-mounted bracket from the center line. Use those measurements to mark the back of the headboard. Install the second part of the bracket set onto the headboard at the marked locations.

6. Slide the headboard down onto the brackets on the wall to mount it.

Bed Frame Mount

7. Position the headboard between the bed and the wall, centering the headboard across the width of the bed.

8. Locate the holes or slots on the frame at the head of the bed.

9. Mark the location of the bed frame holes onto the headboard if the headboard does not already have slots for mounting. Drill a hole completely through the headboard using a drill bit slightly larger than the size of the bolt.

10. Push the bolt through the backside of the headboard and through the hole on the bed frame. Add a washer and then use the wing nut to secure it snugly. NOTE: If the bolt head exceeds the size of the opening on the headboard, use an additional washer on the head of the bolt.

Make Homemade Foot Stools

A foot stool is similar to an ottoman.

A foot stool is very similar to an ottoman because it can be used as a foot rest, or as a small stool to sit or stand on. For beginning do-it-yourselfers and beginning woodworkers, making a homemade foot stool is a simple enough project that won't break the bank and wont stump your skills. As you get more advanced in your hobby, you may want to create a more complex foot stool, but for now, a simple box-shaped stool will do the trick.

Instructions

1. Cut four ½-inch thick wooden planks so that they are 6-inches wide by 12-inches long using a powered miter saw or hand miter saw if a powered saw is not available. Any type of wood works well for this project, for example pine planks are inexpensive yet sturdy enough for this project.

2. Cut one ½-inch thick wooden plank so that it is 6-inches wide by 7-inches long.

3. Cut four 2-inch thick wooden blocks so that they are 2-inches wide by 2-inches long.

4. Cut four right triangles from a ½-inch thick wooden plank so that the legs of the triangles are both 2-inches long.

5. Attach one of the 6-inch by 12-inch planks to another plank of the same size so that the 12-inch sides meet at a 90 degree angle. The ½-inch thick edge of the first plank should be flush with the face of the second plank. Hammer in four nails along the 12-inch length of the planks so that the nails go in from the face of the first plank into the edge of the second plank. Repeat this step with the other two planks of the same size. These will make the corners of the foot stool. The nails must be long enough to go through the two boards so nails 1-inch long, or longer, will work best.

6. Attach the two corners of the foot stool so that a square frame is created that is 12-inches high by 6-inches wide by 7-inches deep. Attach the corners in the same way as the planks creating the corners were attached to each other.

7. Attach the 6-inch by 7-inch wooden plank to one end of the frame. Hammer in four nails on each side of the frame from the face of the 6-inch by 7-inch plank into the ½-inch thick edges of the frame. This will be the top of the foot stool.

8. Attach one of the 2-inch by 2-inch triangles to the inside of the bottom of the foot stool so that the 2-inch legs of the triangles hug one corner of the frame. Hammer in one nail on both legs of the triangle from the face of the frame into the ½-inch thick edge of the legs of the triangle. Repeat the step with the remaining three triangles.

9. Drill a ¼-inch hole into the center of each of the four triangles and a ¼-inch hole into the center of each of the four wooden blocks.

10. Insert a ¼-inch in diameter by 1-inch in length wooden peg into each of the holes in the wooden blocks. Attach the pegs to the blocks using wood glue.

11. Attach each of the wooden blocks to the wooden triangles using wood glue. Make sure to attach the blocks to the triangles so that the wooden pegs go into the ¼-inch holes on the triangles. Allow time for the glue to dry.

12. Smooth out all the surfaces of the foot stool using sandpaper and finish the foot stool using wood stain.

Make Golden Syrup

Golden syrup is a thick, honey-colored syrup used in a variety of recipes and desserts, or as a topping for pancakes or ice cream. Golden syrup is a favorite in the U.K. and Australia, but if you live across the pond, you may have a difficult time locating it. If you have a hankering for the sweet treat, you can make a very acceptable imitation in your own kitchen. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Instructions

1. Pour the white sugar in a heavy saucepan. Jiggle the pan so the sugar will be evenly distributed over the bottom.

2. Mix the water and vinegar in a small mixing bowl. Sprinkle the mixture over the sugar.

3. Cook the mixture over low heat for five minutes. Even though it may be tempting, don't stir.

4. Turn the heat up to medium and continue to cook the mixture for about five minutes, without stirring. Remove the pan from the heat when the mixture turns a golden color.

5. Add the light corn syrup and let the mixture sit for about 3 minutes. When it stops bubbling, stir it thoroughly with a wooden spoon.

6. Let the golden syrup cool slightly and then pour it into a glass or plastic container. Seal it tightly and store it at room temperature. The syrup will last for 2 to 3 months.

Paint and finish your Spanish-style exterior with rustic elements. Emphasize features such as a stone wall, exposed brick and red tile by using a clear or lightly tinted varnish rather than covering them with paint. A stucco facade is the ideal element in Spanish design, but you can create the look more simply by adding a low stucco wall in the front garden. White or cream paint colors typify the style.

Tile

Tile accents give Spanish exteriors an artisan look. A tile mural may feature a classic scene such as architecture, fountains, gardens or fruit trees, or it may consist of nothing more than an abstract series of tile in Mediterranean hues of cobalt blue, bottle green and sunny yellow. On garden paths or patio floors, terra-cotta tiles have an earthy look. Use finishes that have some grain to them to avoid slippery surfaces. For an elaborate accent, invest in hand-painted talavera tile, a traditional form of Spanish tile that features intricate raised designs. Most talavera now comes from Puebla, in Mexico, where the process to make them is less costly, but the aesthetic originated in Spain.

Landscaping

Landscaping forms an integral part of Spanish-style home design, due to the Mediterranean tradition of blurring boundaries between the home exterior and interior. Frame a Spanish porch, patio or simple stoop with a container garden. Terra-cotta and talavera-style containers may hold small lemon trees, rosemary bushes or bougainvillea. For larger, more dramatic plantings, consider leafy green vines climbing a trellis or column or a line of palm trees or leafy palm plants. In dry climates, a cactus garden or arrangement of succulents complement a Spanish home well.

Styles Of Rocking Chairs

Rocking chairs come in a wide variety of styles.

Rocking chairs are simply seats built on rocking pieces of wood. Although originating in England, Benjamin Franklin is credited for introducing the rocking chair to America, where it still enjoys wide popularity. From sitting outside on the porch to rocking a crying baby to sleep, rocking chairs in any shape or form conjure up images of tradition and comfort. Does this Spark an idea?

Gooseneck Style

Gooseneck rocking chairs were first made in the 18th century. This style is characterized by unique wood carvings of geese necks. The arms of this traditional chair are designed to resemble the neck and head of a goose, including the eyes. Although some simply had gooseneck handles, many designs called for intricate moldings of geese necks around the trimming.

Bentwood Style

The Bentwood rocking chair style is distinguishable by its flowing style invented by German inventor Michael Thonet in the mid-1800s. Thonet developed and patented a process by which wood is steamed and bent into graceful handles and rocking legs that seem to flow into one another seamlessly. This chair is light and practical, yet elegant.

Amish Style

The Amish chair is named for the traditional American sect that first designed it. This chair is characterized by comfortable, contoured seats and backs. The builder dries small slabs of solid hickory or oak wood from young saplings, steams them into curved shapes that support the back. Authentic Amish chairs are signed by their makers.

Kennedy Style

Kennedy rocking chairs are styled after the John F. Kennedy's favorite seat that he bought from P & P Chair Company in 1955. This rocking chair helped to soothe lingering pain from a previous war injury, and it appears in many pictures with him. His chair became so popular that P & P Chair Company started producing them in mass. This chair is characterized by its simple, steam-formed design with a back cushion.

Adirondack

The artistic concept behind the rustic Adirondack rocking chair was first introduced to the Appalachian region of America from England in the 1830s. This chair is characterized by pieces of rustic sticks and twigs either nailed or lashed together to form a rocking chair. The 1980s saw a reinterpretation of the style using larger, flat pieces of wood.

Morris

The Morris rocking chair style is identifiable by its low-lying, upholstered seat and solid oak frame. Most rocking chairs do not have padding or upholstering, which makes the Morris so unique. These chairs are upholstered in various materials, including leather or fabric.

Make Flypaper And Fly Traps

Make Flypaper and Fly Traps

Flies are disgusting, flying, germ ridden, spreaders of disease. Can you tell, I do not like flies? Flies ruin outdoor barbeques and picnics. They are a nuisance in the house. Flies land on food and you are constantly swatting them away. This is a very easy way to make your own Flypaper or Fly Traps. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Buy a paper decoration from a party store. It can be a centerpiece type decoration or what I like to use is a paper lantern. Whatever type of decoration you buy, be sure it has an open area. Make sure you do not buy anything expensive. Buying a decoration is not necessary, it will just make your flypaper more attractive. Who wants to see dead flies stuck to a piece of cardboard hanging over their food.

2. Cut a piece of thin cardboard or heavy stock paper. The size will be determined by the size of your paper decoration.

3. Paint a coat of honey on your cardboard or heavy weight paper. Allow the honey to sit for about 2 hours. The honey should feel very sticky and not drip off of your cardboard.

4. Hide the cardboard inside your table decoration or hanging lantern. Glue the cardboard to an inside surface so that it is pretty much hidden. Place close to your food or area where you have a fly problem. The flies will go for the honey, get stuck and die. After your party or barbeque, throw the entire decoration in the garbage. You can also punch a hole in the top of your flypaper , insert a ribbon and hang.

Tips For Black & White Films

Many filmmakers choose to shoot films in black and white to show historical context, but how can the filmmaker add depth and contrast to his black and white films? It is usually not enough to shoot a film in black and white for it to be effective. You must use some techniques to bring your characters to life and add "color" to a colorless film.

Color Juxtaposition

To accent the effect of black and white, some filmmakers use spots of color within a black and white film. The 1993 film "Schindler's List," directed by Steven Spielberg, uses a color introduction and ending while the main body of the film is in black and white. Also, there is a girl in a red dress that appears several times during the film. It add realism and a memory device to the film. Spielberg used this method to help the audience better relate to a single character without ever having seen her face or seen her develop during the course of the movie. In addition, a powerful scene when the protagonist, Oscar Schindler, sees the girl dead (after having seen her alive earlier in the film) serves to remind the audience of her presence. She makes an impact without saying a word simply because Spielberg used a color in a black and white film.

You can use this effect in the same way, but for a variety of purposes. In the 1998 film "Pleasantville," the director (Gary Ross) gradually added color to the black and white film to accent the changes that were occurring in the plot and characters. While he associated black and white with dull and ordinary characters, Ross used color to indicate that characters were going through interesting and varied changes. Although this technique requires a great deal of post-production work, it can be a very effective method of using black and white film in an interesting way.

Contrast

When filming in black and white, the temptation is to ignore the colors present in your mise en scene (individual scene presentation) when shooting. Resist this temptation. In fact, some critics consider color to be almost as important in black and white films as in color films. The reason: contrast. Darker colors contrast with lighter colors, and the way in which you blend the different shades of black and white will greatly influence how the audience sees your film.

Use black as an antagonist shade while contrasting it with white and lighter protagonist shades. This extreme contrast is obviously clear to the viewer. However, subtle changes in contrast may be difficult to detect. To avoid this problem, never save black and white photography for post-production. In other words, set your digital camera to black and white and shoot through that view rather than shooting in color and editing into black and white. During post production, you can add contrast or accents to certain situations, but shooting in black and white makes the process a great deal easier.

Recover A Chair

You picked up that old but beautiful chair at a garage sale and brought it home, only to realize that the fabric isn't as beautiful in your home as it was at the garage sale. Obviously you can't take it back, but you can recover it. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a screwdriver to remove the old fabric from your chair. Pay attention to the way that the chair is put together so you can replicate it when you put it back together. Also, be careful not to ruin the fabric because you will use it for a pattern.

2. Pin the old upholstery pieces to your new fabric like a pattern, and cut the new pieces. You can cut the new pieces larger than the older pieces, but don't cut them smaller or you might run out of fabric. Follow the pattern and lay your new pieces of fabric accordingly.

3. Set up your work temporarily by putting a few large tacks in the middle of the front piece and tacking it to the chair. Don't worry about pulling it tight; that comes later.

4. Cut a V shape in the fabric wherever it goes around the chair frame. You can use the fabric that you removed from the chair as a guide to determine how deep or frequent these cuts must be. Otherwise, cut them deep enough to keep the fabric from binding or puckering but shallow enough that you don't see them when you sit on the chair.

5. Pull the fabric taut and staple it to the back of the chair frame, smoothing out the fabric as you go. Be careful around the corners and the chair legs.

6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 until all the front pieces are on the chair.

7. Sew the back piece to the chair, and then sit back and enjoy your re-covered chair.

Place both sheets of paper together and use your hole punch to make your first three holes. After you have made your three holes on the right side of the paper, repeat the procedure for the left side. When you hold the translucent paper in a cylinder manner the holes on both sides of the paper should overlap each other.

5. Put the two sheets together with the pressed flower layer on the inside. Slip the paper onto the lamp form. Place the holes for the bookbinder's screws at the back post of the lamp form.

6. Insert the screws at the marked spots and screw closed.

Paint Vinyl Shades

Paint Vinyl Shades

Painting vinyl shades is relatively easy. It also provides an opportunity to express your creativity. Vinyl shades can be treated like a painter's canvas on which you can paint various colors, patterns and images to achieve a decorative effect that complements the room. When you tire of looking at your artwork, simply roll the shades up. Your kids can have fun decorating the shades in their rooms. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove dust and small debris from the shades with a feather duster. Fill a bucket with a mixture of soap and warm water. Use a sponge to wash the shades. Allow them to dry and then remove them from the windows.

2. Put cardboard down in your work space and set the shades down on top of the cardboard. Avoid painting in direct sunlight.

3. Paint the shades. A good-quality interior flat latex paint will do the job. If you are painting single color, cut in the edges with a brush and then paint the majority of the shade with a roller. If you have chosen a more creative approach, several other techniques are available. Outline the basic design with a paintbrush or a pencil. Paint the primary background color with a roller or a sponge. Dip the sponge into the paint tray and apply it to the shade. Rotate the sponge as you apply the paint to achieve a faux or swirling affect. Once the background is painted, fill in the other details with sponges and paintbrushes. Allow the shades to dry.

4. Place the shades back in the windows.

Make Explosive Arrows In Resident Evil 2

Explosive arrows, in "Resident Evil 2," are a new addition to the Resident Evil franchise. You cannot simply find the arrows--they have to be forged with regular arrows and ultra-rare explosive powder. Due to their rarity, explosive arrows are one of the most powerful weapons in the game. They are a great accessory when ravious dogs and zombies are hunting you.

Instructions

1. Find the crossbow located at the military training facility. Go up to the second floor near the main entrance. Continue to the room at the end of the hallway. The crossbow will be on the desk.

2. Find arrows. They are extremely easy to come by and usually show up right before or after a boss battle. Press the "X" button to pick up the arrows. Go to your weapon inventory by pressing "Square," and choose to combine your arrows with your crossbow. Highlight the crossbow and press "Equip" to use it.

3. Use the explosive powder. You can find explosive powder at the Airport Save Room, the Casino and the Terminal. At the airport save room, use the lock pick on the Duralumin case that you found at the Palace bathroom. At the casino, find the powder on top of the baby piano. In the terminal, search for the explosive powder in the terminal bunk, along with the powder, retrieve the handgun bullets and first aid spray.

4. Combine the arrows and the explosive powder. Access your weapon inventory and forge the explosive arrows. Equip the arrows to your crossbow and then equip the crossbow as your primary weapon.

Tell If Wood Is Pressure Treated

When wood is pressure treated, chemicals are forced into the wood to preserve it and make it resist rot, decay and insects. Three of the most common chemicals used to treat lumber are discussed below. Two of them--CCA and AC2 (also known as ACQ)--result in "green" pressure-treated wood. There also is a form of "brown" pressure-treated wood that is produced by Olympic and other stain manufacturers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. CCA stands for chromated copper arsenate. Until 2003, if you went to any lumberyard, this would almost certainly be the only pressure-treated lumber you would find. However, in 2003 the EPA banned the sale of CCA lumber because of concerns over the fact that it contains arsenic. You can identify CCA because it is stamped "CCA" or has a tag on the end labeling it as such. You can also check its color; CCA lumber will turn a dull gray over time.

2. ACQ stands for alkaline copper quaternary, which is also known as AC2. This is the "replacement" treated lumber for CCA since the latter was banned by the EPA in 2003. You can identify AC2 by a stamp or tag on the end, or by color; it will fade to a golden gray over time.

3. Brown-treated lumber is wood that is "prestained" with a special version of a company's wood stain. Both Olympic and Thompson's produce brown-treated lumber. This wood is brown, of course, and you can distinguish it from lumber that has merely been stained by the penetration of the stain. If you cut the lumber, the stain on the prestained lumber will penetrate deeper than wood stained at home.

Make Doll Furniture From Wood

Make Doll Furniture From Wood

Making doll furniture from wood is a great hobby for doll collectors and woodworking enthusiasts alike. It is important to know the scale you'll need to properly fit the dolls. You can then use designs that are already to the scale you need, or you can scale down designs for any furniture you wish. Calculate the scale by measuring the height of a doll. Then divide the height of a real person by the height of the doll. For example, a doll 11.5 inches tall would be at a scale of 1/6 based on an adult height of 69 inches.

Instructions

1. Determine the scale required for your doll furniture. Here we will use a 1:6 scale.

2. Find or create designs for your doll house furniture. A basic dining room table made from balsa wood makes an easy project to begin with. Thick pieces of balsa wood can be cut with a coping saw. Thin pieces can be cut using a utility knife.

3. Write down the dimensions of the wood you need. For example, using a 1:6 scale, a dining room table that is 30 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 48 inches long would require a piece of wood 5 inches wide and 8 inches long for the table top. Four legs would be needed, each 5 inches long. Balsa wood that is 1/4-inch thick could be used for all pieces.

4. Measure the balsa wood, and mark it using a pencil and ruler. Then cut along the lines using a sharp utility knife. This is done by pressing with moderate force and scoring the lines several times while keeping the ruler on the line. Do not try to cut balsa wood in a single stroke of the knife, as the wood can be easily damaged with too much force.

5. Sand the pieces of wood with sandpaper.

6. Glue the legs to the bottom of the table using white glue and clamp them to the table using small wood clamps.

7. Visit hardware stores and craft shops for small, metal pieces to use in your furniture. Use pieces that are as close to scale as possible, but do not worry if they are not exactly to scale. You can also improvise for many items. Decorative round drawer handles, for example, can be made from the heads of brass finishing nails; you can cut them to size with wire cutters.

Install A Curtain Rod Sconce Bracket

Victorian homes with Gothic curtains had elaborate rod sconces.

A curtain rod sconce is a decorative piece of the curtain treatment shaped to resemble animals, Gothic architecture or anything the purchaser finds interesting. The rod for the curtains or valance slides inside the hole set in the sconce and is capped by an end item that matches the design and motif of the sconces. For example, if the sconce is a cluster of grapes, the rod end caps would be grapes also. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the curtain rod over the window where the curtain will hang. The curtain rod sconce is typically for the valance, which hangs at the top of the window frame to hide the metal curtain treatment holding the regular curtains.

2. Mark where the curtain ends by drawing a small pencil mark on the wood window frame on both ends of the rod. This spot determines where to place the sconce brackets.

3. Measure 1 inch toward the window from each of the pencil marks and place a second pencil mark at this spot. This is where the sconce brackets will be placed.

4. Place a bracket on the inner pencil mark and secure it into the window frame with a wood screw and screwdriver drill. Drill the other bracket into the window frame on the other side of the window, using the inner pencil markings, wood screws and drill.

5. Slide the curtain rod sconces on the brackets by placing the opening in the back of the sconce slightly above the brackets and pulling down gently until the sconce is firmly set on the bracket.

6. Unscrew the end of the curtain rod to fit the rod through one sconce from the outside edge through to the other sconce. Once the rod has entered through both sconces, replace the end cap.

Show Love With Text Messaging

Show Love with Text Messaging

We all know how the thought of our love makes us smile. I always think of mine's beautiful blue eyes and bald head and get instantly happier. He is the most amazing man and I always want him to know it. One simple way is random texting. It lets him know I love him and puts a smile on his face.

Instructions

1. Think about what you want to say. Then figure out condense it so you get to the point "I love you dork" or "Let's Play Tonight." The best text flirtations are quick to read and clear to understand. You want to minimize the abbreviations because it takes from the romance if they have to think too much.

2. Next pick your timing. Think about your guy's schedule. Does he wake up at 4 am, get off work at 3 pm, or hit the dojo at 5:00 pm? You want to time so that he will have his phone with him and on when the text is received. The buzz adds a bit of anticipation and surprise to the message. Plus the fact that he is reading it just as you wrote it makes it all the more sexy.

3. Have in mind a response if he texts back and obviously wants to flirt. Think about words that have double meanings or innuendos that he could take multiple ways and can't be sure how you intended it. This can heat up the text and put ideas in his head really quick. Just make sure to do it in a manner that is not too graphic so he can let his imagination work.

4. Make sure to know when to stop. If you have gone back and forth a few times stop before it gets too hot or heavy. You don't want him to overheat before you see him. You just want to tease your guy a bit.

Paint Furniture Spanish Style

Redoing a room in Spanish style can be cost-prohibitive. Fortunately, there are a wealth of paints, glazes, tricks and tools in craft stores that can help decorators create the Spanish look without laying out a bunch of Euros. Some sweat equity and a bit of vision will help you lend your home some old world charm. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Get inspired by looking at pictures of Spanish style furniture. Accents of Salado (see Resources below) is a website jammed with images showing Spanish colonial and hacienda styles. There is also advice on add color and texture to a room to give it Spanish pizzazz.

2. Choose pieces to paint in the Spanish style. For an authentic Spanish look, select pieces that are carved from wood. Chests, shelves, side tables and cabinets that feature hand carving, leather tops or wrought iron accents are perfect for a Spanish interior. A simple, rustic wood table is also a good place to start.

3. Select a Spanish palette. You are aiming for bold, warm colors in earth tones. If you want to use wood stain, the classic tones are walnut, chestnut, mahogany, cedar and oak. Go for rich, dark hues, or, on smaller pieces, try a bright gold, deep red, indigo or olive green.

4. Choose a painting style. You can quickly update a piece of furniture in Spanish style by priming the furniture and painting it in two coats of paint from the Spanish palette. You can opt to stain the piece. Or you can try for a faux finish that has a Spanish accent, such as applying a varnish that artificially ages the furniture. Craft stores sell crackle glazes and antiquing veneers that are ideal for this sort of renovation.

5. Embellish the piece. You can create the effect of wear and tear by sanding the edges of the furniture once the paint is dry. You can replace the furniture's current hardware with pieces that look Spanish. Think chunky hardware in wrought iron, aged copper or bronze. You can even add a mosaic tile tabletop or a indigo glass inlay to give the furniture a Spanish artisan look.

Live oaks are known for having a broad, spreading growth habit. These trees do not grow well in colder regions. A live oak may be cut down if it outgrows the space where it was planted, or if it becomes infested by disease, fungus or insects such as termites. Once live oaks are cut down, the tree's immense size means that the wood must be split to make the tree easier to move. If you plan to reuse the wood in a fireplace or stove, split logs will burn more easily because they have more burnable exposed surfaces. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Cut the tree's limbs and trunk into sections between 1 foot to 3 feet long with an axe or chainsaw to make them easier to carry. According to the University of Missouri Extension, 16 inches is one of the most popular sizes for firewood. Large logs or branches can be lifted onto a sawbuck, which is a cradle made of crisscrossing supports that is designed for cutting logs in half and then shortening them with a saw. To cut a branch on a sawbuck, first saw one-third of the way through the top of the log. Next, saw through the log from the bottom upward to meet the first cut. This will prevent you from binding your blade.

2. Place each log on its end on top of a splitting block. A splitting block is generally a massive piece of dense, treated wood that is buried in the ground so that it sticks above the soil line by 1 inch. The splitting block provides a stable platform for your wood as you split it.

3. Plan the best way to split each log in advance. Determine how large you want to split your live oak logs. If you plan to season and burn your live oak in a stove, you should make each piece smaller than the door of your stove. For an open fireplace, a log should be small enough that one person can handle it easily. Make sure the logs will fit into your fireplace grate. Smaller logs may be divided equally into four sections. Larger logs must have the sides split away so that the core of the log forms a triangle before splitting it in half. In general, do not split logs that are smaller than 3 inches in diameter. Split logs in half that are between 3 and 6 inches. Split logs in four equal pieces if they are between 6 and 12 inches. Split the sides away from a larger log, and then split the inner triangular core in half if the log is larger than 12 inches.

4. Drive the splitting maul down into the end of the log. The weight of the maul, combined with the force of your motion, is often enough to drive the maul completely through the log and split it.

5. Place a wedge into the space made by a splitting maul if the maul is not enough to split the wood. Pound on the back of the wedge with a sledgehammer until the wedge drives the wood apart. This technique works best on large-diameter logs when the maul is not enough to split the log.

Microsuede Upholstery Stain Removal

Microsuede is commonly used on couches and chairs.

Microsuede upholstery has a softness similar to traditional suede. This material is often easier to clean than regular suede, which makes it an ideal choice for couches and other types of furniture. A solution of gentle soap and warm water is strong enough to remove stains from your microsuede. Does this Spark an idea?

Considerations

A soap with a low pH level is best for use on microsuede because it won't dry out the upholstery or make the fabric feel rough. Facial soaps and cleansers meant for sensitive skin are best.

Cleaning

Mix the soap and water in a spray bottle and spray directly on the stain. Blot the stain with a light-colored cloth, which absorbs the stain. Spray fresh water onto the area, and blot again to remove all traces of the stain. Keep blotting until the upholstery is dry.

Warning

Anytime you apply water to microsuede, you risk developing water stains. You must completely dry the upholstery to prevent the water stains.

Replace The Fuel Line In A Gas Trimmer

When a fuel line in a gas trimmer goes bad the engine will sputter and die more and more frequently. After you have eliminated the possibility for other causes--no gas in the tank, clogged filter or dirty carburetor--you can safely assume that it is the gas line causing the problem. Gas will cause the rubber or plastic of a fuel line to eventually break down and clog the line. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Locate the fuel line on your gas trimmer. It will be a small hose that connects the carburetor to the fuel tank.

2. Drain the gas from the fuel tank into a glass jar or metal gas container. If you want to reuse the gas, make sure the container you use is clean and dry. Some advanced models of gas trimmers have a flow cock where the fuel line connects, If your model has this, turn the lever to the "Off" position and you will not need to drain the tank.

3. Disconnect the fuel line at both the gas tank and the carburetor. Your fuel line will be held in place in one of two ways, either with a pinch ring or a hose clamp. If you have a pinch ring (which looks like a ring with two handles that cross each other) use a pair of pliers to pinch the handles together; this will open the ring and you can slide it off the spout the hose is attached to. If you have a hose clamp, use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the tension on the clamp (by turning the screw counterclockwise). Once the connections are loose, pull the hose off.

4. Cut your replacement fuel line to the same length as your old one with a pair of scissors.

5. Slide the new hose onto the fuel connections for the carburetor and gas tank and reattach the hose clamp or pinch ring. If you have emptied the gas tank, refill it now or switch the fuel lever to "On."

Mix & Match Different Styles Of Living Room Furniture

Color makes it all happen

There are no hard-and-fast rules for designing your own decor. Mix and match your living room styles. Own your place and fill it as you like. Because it is your personal space, the first priority is pleasing yourself and providing for your own needs and comfort. As long as your furnishings do this, it does not matter what opinion others have.

Trends come and go. Trying to keep up with a current style only means that very soon yours will no longer be the newest and most forward-thinking arrangement. Instead of chasing what is in, it is better to make your own path. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Personalize

1. Use a piece in a new, quirky or unexpected manner. This way, you may make that piece a focal point or use it to build the theme of the room. Artwork or a couch are good choices to stand out as they are larger or more significant elements, to which the eye will be immediately drawn.

2. Find a theme other than a furniture style to unite the collection. Basically, you should look for a commonality among pieces. Some people use color or finish, but a particular ornamentation or detail, pattern, fabric or intended use of the items (as in mixed and matched bookcases) also works.

3. Wooden antique pieces may be the easiest choices for adding to any space. The quality of hardwoods and finishes tend to complement almost any decor and either set off more vibrant pieces or give a touch of elegance to a modern space.

4. Adding small touches may help pull the room together. For example, throw pillows bring the colors of two diverse seatings together. Layers add depth to your space, which will be absorbed in stages and provoke visual interest.

5. If you are afraid of making a mistake, try maintaining your living room with one primary choice of design and use a secondary style to add unique elements. This will prevent the room from looking hodgepodge, but bring enough variation to catch the eye and allow you to express your personality.

Phd Scholarships For History Students

History Ph.D. students can access rare archives as well as money through scholarships and fellowships

Finding funding for furthering your history studies with a doctorate, or Ph.D., can help you limit the loans you take on or the time you devote to working part-time. Possible sources of funding for your doctorate in history include individual universities and individual programs as well as foundations supporting historians and general scholarships. You also might consider looking into getting support from particular organizations related to the individual field of study upon which you plan to focus your doctorate studies. For example, women's history, the history of a particular cultures, as well as historical investigations of certain periods such as the U.S. Civil or Revolutionary War all may have specific organizations devoted to supporting further investigation at the doctoral level.

Scholarships for Study in NYC

The institute gives scholars working in American history short-term research fellowships for doctoral candidates; each year, it awards 10 fellowships. The catch? You have to conduct research within American history archives in New York City. Examples of archives you might choose to investigate include the Gilder Lehrman Collection at the New York Historical Society, the Library of New York Historical Society, the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the New York Public Library Humanities and Social Sciences Library and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library. To apply, you will need to submit a curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation from established scholars, a proposal describing your project, including what archives you'll consult and the expenses you anticipate. The fellowship is in the amount of $3,000.

University Fellowships

If you have been accepted at a doctoral history program, contact representatives of your program to find out about scholarships offered by your university; talk to faculty and current students for ideas. Sometimes your application for study will happen at the same time as your application for a scholarship or financial aid. For example, at the University of Delaware, Ph.D. candidates can get financial aid from the history department in the form of full fellowships or tuition scholarships; the application deadline is December 15, while decisions on both admission and financial aid will be made in early march. At Boston University, Ph.D. students interested in a fellowship to study at the Jordan American Center of Oriental Research can receive awards including stipends, residence, travel and other research expenses for up to six months. Amounts range from $1,000 to $25,000, and the application deadline is February 1.

Fully Funded Programs

Some schools have traditionally very strong financial aid packages for all Ph.D. students. Getting accepted at one of these programs can be a blessing for your bank account. One such program is the graduate program in History at Washington University in St. Louis. With traditional strengths in American, British and European history and emerging growth in new field of race, gender and post-colonial history, the school is highly supportive and normally awards Ph.D. students six years' funding. In addition, other fellowships are available as financial support possibilities.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowships

Studying at the Smithsonian Institution can be supported for periods of three to 12 months. Predoctoral students need to have completed coursework and preliminary exams for their doctoral degree. Students must also be conducting dissertation research and earn the approval of their university to carry out their doctoral research at the Smithsonian. Stipends for predoctoral students are normally $30,000 per year. You must postmark your application by January 15 for awards that will begin on or after June 1.

Identifying Antique Arm Chairs

Antique arm chairs frequently had arms and legs that opened outward

Arm chairs made their debut around the time of the Renaissance and since that time have been designed and produced from countries around the world. Antique arm chairs were made in a variety of fabrics and styles, ranging from simple and plain to ornate and elegant. There are a few methods to correctly identify authentic antique arm chairs.

Instructions

1. Look for chairs that appear to be throne-like, which was called a "fauteuil" in France. The back, seat and arms were frequently covered in material such as velvet and had arms and legs that were open in design. These chairs were popular during the 17th century.

2. Identify wing chairs with gilt wood, which were fashionable in France in the 17th century. The wood is typically carved in detailed, elaborate designs.

3. Look for Chippendale chairs, which featured a vase-shaped back with intricately carved wood and a padded seat. Chippendale chairs in France were typically made out of mahogany wood and had curved arm supports, padded arms and seat, and an arched back. English Chippendale chairs were frequently designed with a ladder back with three shaped and pierced cross rails. Other English Chippendale backs were designed to resemble a gothic window with ornately carved diamond shapes.

4. Find antique arm chairs made out of heavy wood, such as mahogany or oak, featuring ornately carved arms and legs with a seat and back covered in leather. These chairs are indicative of early- to mid-19th century English arm chairs.

5. Look for Oriental antique arm chairs that feature a carved, open back that is flat. The arm rests are flat as well, and the chair has floral carvings in the wood. These chairs are referred to as "rose chairs" and were a common style from China in the late 1800s.

6. Examine the wood closely for signs of age. Antique arm chairs will show signs of age, including a darkening around the hardware and a deepened color on the wood. If the wood looks new, the hardware appears to be modern (such as Phillips-head screws), or the material used for padding looks brand new with no signs of wear, the arm chair is likely not an authentic antique.

7. Look at the carving on the wood. If the lines are perfect and precise without any variation, the chair is probably a reproduction. Examine the wood for signs of authentic hand-carving, which is a primary characteristic that identifies the arm chair as an antique.

8. View websites that sell antique arm chairs to see a wide variety of styles and materials and to get a feel for the look of antique arm chairs (See resources).

What Is The Best Quality Wood For Furniture

What Is the Best Quality Wood for Furniture?

Wood is used to create all types of things, including furniture. It is sturdy, has good texture and color, and is easy to work with in most cases. When starting a project, it can be daunting to decide which wood will work best. One may look better but cost too much, while an inexpensive wood may not hold up well after the project is finished. Here we will explore the top five types of wood, and when and where you should use them to achieve the best results for any furniture project you undertake. Does this Spark an idea?

Types

There are many types of wood. They vary in softness and hardness, flexibility, and even what pattern the grain of the wood makes. Some types of wood are more common than others. There are the more expensive types, such as cherry and mahogany, and the less expensive types of wood, such as beech. Typically, an expensive piece of furniture uses woods like mahogany on the outside, or the visible surafces, and cheaper woods on the non-visible parts. This saves money when building the furniture.

Bedroom

For bedroom furniture, such as the bed frame and dressers, the appearance of the wood is the key to a beautiful bedroom. In the master bedroom, cherry and mahogany are popular choices. They are more expensive but have a nice finish and are pleasing to the eye. It often will not need to be stained, because its original color is considered pretty and desirable. Cheaper woods to use in a bedroom include beech and pine. They are inexpensive and work great in children's rooms.

Kitchen

Maple and pine are excellent choices for furniture built for a kitchen. This usually includes shelves or cabinets, tables and chairs. Pine is excellent because it can be stained or painted. It is used for furniture that the owner intends to decorate after it has been built. Maple is sturdy and attractive but can be costly to use. However, it can take a lot of abuse without breaking or wearing down under stress.

Storage

Storage items such as chests, dressers and closets often use cedar, cherry or mahogany for expensive projects. They all create a pleasing color and hold up well under stress. Cedar is known for its rich aroma and is used primarily in closets and chests. Beech or pine wood is good for those who want a more inexpensive wood that can still hold up fairly well. Beech and pine cost considerably less, and can be stained to achieve a color mimicking that of the more expensive woods.

Overall

While it all comes down to the price range and piece of furniture you're building, the best wood to use for furniture goes in the following order: mahogany, oak, maple, beech and pine. These are the top five woods to use in your projects. Mahogany is the sturdiest but is also one of the most expensive. While pine and beech wood are more common and cheaper, they still make excellent furniture and are great if you plan on staining the piece afterward.

Make Camper Cushions

Whether you've just purchased a used camper that needs fixing up, or your own camper needs sprucing up, replacing the camper's cushions isn't that hard. If the camper is an older model, you might have difficulty finding the correct size cushions. No matter what year of camper it is, buying new cushions can be quite pricey and you might not find what you want. Making your own will solve this problem and you'll save a few dollars at the same time. You don't have to be a master seamstress to do this project either. Read on for some tips in making new cushions for your camper.

Instructions

1. Measure the old cushions that need replacing, if you still have them. If not, measure the area where the new cushions will be. If your old cushion inserts are still in good shape, you'll just need to cover them with new fabric, otherwise you'll need to buy new foam rubber. When measuring, be sure to take the thickness of the cushion into account and add an extra inch for seams. For example, if your cushion is 36 inches by 24 inches and the thickness is 5 inches, your fabric panels will need to be 39.5 inches by 27.5. This will allow for the cushion's thickness and seams.

2. Purchase your materials that will be needed to make the new cushions. You should be able to locate your fabric, foam rubber and other supplies at your local fabric or craft store. Take into consideration how much the cushions will be used when selecting your fabric. Since the cushions are going inside of a camper, you'll probably want something that's easy to clean and durable.

3. Cut out your fabric to the desired size for the cushions. Cut your foam rubber to the correct size for the new cushions, if you have to make new ones. If the edges are ragged on the foam, don't fret; they'll be covered by the fabric.

4. Pin your fabric pieces together with the right sides facing each other. Sew three seams closed, allowing the fourth one to remain open. This will be the seam that the foam cushion will be inserted through.

5. Insert the foam cushion into the fabric cushion covering. Turn the raw edge of the seam toward the inside and pin together. Sew this last seam closed. Trim off any loose strands of thread. Repeat these steps until all the camper cushions have been completed. Place your new cushions in your camper.
